Traditions evolve. We talkedwith Alain Bernardi about theMonte Carlo Casino

Say “Monte Carlo”, and the firstthing that comes to mind is the

casino with its luxurious rooms andgambling, and the risk that goes withit. But behind the scenes of this age-old amusement is the person who,day after day, increases its potential,modernizing that timeless place whilerespecting its tradition. The man be-hind this feat is Alain Bernardi, whoon October 15, 2003 was namedgeneral manager of the casino. Forthe last thirty-seven years, he hasbeen a part of SBM – Società desBains de Mer – the company thatowns the casino. Luxury asked Mr.Bernardi to talk about the casino, andhe started by telling us how attractiveMonte Carlo is to the rest of the

world. “Monte Carlo has alwaysbeen an appealing destination. Morerecently, there have been numerousvisitors from eastern countries, espe-cially from Russia. The Asian market isalso becoming very important sincethey tend to want to discover theMonte Carlo lifestyle, to get to knowall sides of Europe. And then, natural-ly, there’s the casino,” continuesBernardi, “the crown jewel of MonteCarlo. Today the Monegasque casinois the leader in Europe for tablegames.” Alain Bernardi knew how tocombine the need to open up to newmarkets while maintaining tradition.“The casino opened toward the endof the 19th century, and our intentionis to return it to its original splendor.

On November 1st, the new Ameriqueroom will be reopened after restora-tion work is completed. Clients alsochoose the Monte Carlo Casino be-cause they want to admire the archi-tecture; they tour the site as if it werea museum. Let’s not forget thatMonte Carlo has two other importantcasinos, the Cafè de Paris and the SunCasino, the most American of MonteCarlo’s casinos. A restaurant will alsobe located there, called Le Circus, aname that calls to mind the circusconcept that Prince Ranieri so loved.In fact, the restaurant’s structure is go-ing to look like that of a real circus.Cafè de Paris is currently under reno-vation. Our intent is to connect it tothe main building through a glass

Finally, there’sa summer casino inside the SportingClub and one last casino will be inau-gurated on October 1st in the newhotel, the Montecarlo Bay.” But AlainBernardi’s main objective is to restruc-ture the offering of the three existingcasinos, also by improving the mar-keting campaign. “ In addition tonew restaurants and gaming rooms,what I wanted to renovate were theslot-machines, which weren’t so at-tractive. We managed to get the ex-clusive from the manufacturer andnow we are on the cutting edge withinteractive machines that offer differ-ent gaming options. In fact, in Caféde Paris, we have inaugurated the

new Star Wars slot-machines.” Alain con-tinues, “We have cre-ated a partnershipwith the London Club,a company that brings

together some of the most importantcasinos of London, such as Les Am-bassadeurs and Le Rendez-Vous.Thanks to the Nice International Air-port, visitors and businessmen from acommercial city such as London haveaccess to an attraction such as MonteCarlo.” Through his experience, AlainBernardi tells us that Italians are veryimportant players, in Monte Carloand elsewhere. Celebrities from everycultural and social circle have passedthrough the casino, including Vittoriode Sica, Sir Winston Churchill, RenatoRascel, and a famous player, thebeautiful and elegant Liuba Rizzoli,widow of publisher Andrea. “I re-member my encounter with one ex-tremely wealthy player. king. He was playing in a privateroom, and all of us were wonderingwhat drove him to play even if hecould afford anything he desired. I re-alized that it was the risk. Heshares his personal tastes and interestswith his family. “In my free time, evenif it’s limited, I love to play golf withmy family. My wife and my son arevery good. Our favorite vacation spotsare those next to the golf course, likein Venice and Monte Carlo fromwhere you can enjoy a beautiful viewall the way to Saint Tropez. And thenthere’s Dubai of course: one of mywife’s favorite places.” Before sayinggoodbye, he tells us something abouthimself. “ I have a strong character,like my astrological sign, Leo. The truechallenge in managing a casino lies inmaintaining a balance”.

Quando si dice “Monte Carlo”,la prima cosa che viene in

mente è il suo Casinò, il lusso dellesue sale, il gioco e il rischio che loaccompagna.Ma dietro le quinte di questo diver-timento secolare c’è chi accrescegiorno dopo giorno le sue poten-zialità, modernizzando quel luogosenza tempo, nel rispetto della suatradizione. Signore di questa im-presa è Alain Bernardi, datrentasette anni all’interno dellaSocietà des Bains de Mer, che il 15Ottobre 2003 è stato nominato Di-rettore Generale del Casinò. Ifrancesi lo definiscono uomo dallavolontà d’acciaio, grazie alla qualeè giunto a possedere unaconoscenza straordinaria del regnodel gioco. Ciò che anima Bernardi

è una politica volta a promuovere ilpatrimonio architettonico del Cas-inò, indirizzandolo verso il nuovomillennio. Ecco il Casinò presentato da AlainBernardi. “Monte Carlo è semprestata una meta ambita, ultima-mente giungono numerosi clientisoprattutto dalla Russia, tanto chesi è deciso di ospitare molteplicispettacoli di artisti russi. Ma ancheil mercato asiatico sta assumendomolta importanza, in quanto c’è ildesiderio di conoscere l’Europa inogni sua espressione. E poi natu-ralmente - prosegue Alain Bernardi- c’è il Casinò. Il 1860 fu l’anno incui nacque questa straordinariastruttura. Il principe Carlo IIIGrimaldi decise di affidarne la ges-tione a François Blanc, un uomo

d’affari molto importante cheriuscì a dare prestigio al Casinò.Oggi leader in Europa dei giochi datavolo.” Alain Bernardi ha saputocombinare la necessità di aprirsi alnuovo mercato mantenendo latradizione: “Il Casinò è nato in-torno alla fine del XIX secolo, ed ènostra intenzione riportarlo all’an-tico splendore. Il primo di novem-bre sarà riaperta la sala Ameriquedopo i lavori di ripristino. I clientiscelgono il Casinò di Monte Carlo,anche perché desiderano ammi-rare un’architettura antica. Nonbisogna dimenticare che a MonteCarlo ci sono anche il Cafè de Parise il Sun Casinò, il più americanodei casinò monegaschi. il leone. Ma la vera difficoltà nelgestire un casinò sta nel man-tenere l’equilibrio”.
