FROM YOUR COMMODORE April has come and almost gone right before my very eyes. Has anyone else noticed how quickly the months fly by these days? One third of 2005 has passed and a lot has happened at the club. Every single day something wonderful is happening in the heads. The cabinets are beautiful thanks to Ken and Mary Bradley. The tile is now being laid in the ladies head and it is a testament to the excellent taste of our design team. Jim is very excited because he can now see light at the end of the tunnel. So many people have worked hard on this project

and it is going to be one we will all be very proud of. Thanks to all who came to the April General Meeting. It was a wonderful

feeling to know that this years Board of Directors is being supported by the mem-bership.

The Spring II Bay Race was held on April 16th in conjunction with a Craft Fair put on by the Social Committee. There is a LOT of talent in our club and it was gratifying to see so many members bring their personal gifts to share with each other. After the race, the Soup Contest was filling and fun! We all over-ate while judging the fabulous entries. Gale Condon won for her yummy Split Pea Soup and Jim and Rachelle Phillips came in a very close second for their Sauer-kraut delicacy. I personally think the whole thing was rigged because I was posi-tive I would win. Oh well, there is always next year.

This month the Board of Directors is adding a new column titled NOW HEAR THIS. The Masthead is our one consistent and constant way of communi-cating to the membership the important news that affects us all. READ your Masthead to keep informed!

That brings me to the most important topic I would like to address this month. The Board of Directors has been working hard on several items that need to be carefully thought through and then brought to the attention of the entire membership. I will give you a brief summary of the important one that is being considered. Volunteerism in our club is critical to the well being of our organiza-tion. We continue to strive to provide an affordable membership by relying on the cooperation of our members in the operation and maintenance of our facilities. It has been brought to the attention of the Board of Directors that some members have allowed this obligation to lapse. We cannot afford to let this happen. Our treasurer keeps reminding us that it is through the efforts of all of us that we are able to keep our yearly dues at a level that we can all manage. I have checked with several clubs and am now convinced that we not only have a superior club but we have one that most boaters can afford. FROM YOUR VICE COMMODORE

Ahoy Mates! Well, here it is May already and I feel I’ve barely had enough time to hoist up my shorts and take the slack out of my rigging before April passed me by. It isn’t the work on the heads that keep me so busy but the pursuit of the person (s) who told you folks that the heads would be competed by Opening Day. Anyone capable of such fabrica-tions ought to be forced to walk the plank. I promise to continue my search. Meanwhile, the head remodel continues toward completion. The cabinets are in and finished and how elegant they are! When you see Ken and Mary Bradley give them a big thank you as they provided them to the club for the cost of materials only. John Bodine straightened out a slanting 2x4 and Matt Piper extended a couple walls that

made us ADA compliant. Speaking of “the hammer” Bodine, please notice that he has installed five new mod-ern looking doors. I know, you counted only four doors and want to know how he could have installed five when there are only four. Well, he asked me which way the door swung and I told him, but the problem was we were talking about different doors so he had to install one of them twice. So much for the art of good, clear, communications. My directions to him were probably as clear as his would have been to me had he told me to go to Taylor Rose’s lazarette and retrieve a snatch block.

If any of you thought Easter Sunday was just for bunnies let me correct your thinking. This past Easter saw the arrival of a small group of artists who took brush and roller in hand, and with the help of a couple ap-prentices, painted the heads. This group included the Rembrandts (Pat & Dot Rygh), the Goyas, (Roy & Bev Gammill) and. of course Chagall (Gail Condon) as well as their apprentices Jim & Rachelle. Sistine chapel, step aside.

The tile has arrived and is being installed. As I write this report the tile in the shower and dressing area of the women’s head is complete. If you see a guy in the heads that is on his knees and covered in tile dust say “Hi Matt, nice work”. Templates for the vanities and sinks have been made and installation is scheduled for next week. Partitions for toilet stalls have been ordered and should arrive about the time the tile is finished-I hope.

I have one last bit of information to pass on. The flags (maintaining and ordering) are in the domain of the Vice Commodore. The decision, however, as to when the flag is to be lowered to half-mast, is a decision re-served for the Commodore. Members, in other words, are not to take it upon themselves to make such decisions.

Remember to mind your P’s & Q’s…… The Vice Commode-a-dore

FUN FLOAT

May 6TH, 2005 @ 10:30 AM

Our April float came and went without a lot of you. Although the weather looked threatening it turned out to be great. The bay was glassy smooth on the way back. Our next paddle is the one many of you have been waiting for. We are going to the Bayside Cafe. We will leave the dock at 10:30AM on Friday, May 6th. It's an easy paddle and we should get there a little after 11:00. Everyone is invited to join us. Drive a car, ride a bike, walk, or skateboard. Remember bring cash (No credit cards).

— G.P.P.

Spaces are available on the kayak rack and in the backyard. Call me. Lynn

This time of the year, the weather really wreaks havoc with racing. Several of the Bay Fleet went up to Lake Margarita for the second of the Lopez series, but after getting our boats set up, the race committee of SLYC decided to cancel because of impending rain. After they left, we went ahead and did some fun races amongst ourselves, and got 3 races in before the rains came. Then for the third of the series scheduled at Lopez, the weather forecast was so bad that only 3 boats showed up – and 2 of them were from Morro Bay. As luck would have it, the weather there was beautiful, the sailing was fun, and SLYC put on a great barbecue that evening, breakfast the next morning, and we had even better sailing that day. It certainly proved how different conditions can be in neighboring communities. Congratulations to John Neiswanger and Kenton Hendricks for winning that series. The other Bay Fleet race was Spring I which saw 12 boats on the line. Thanks to Victor Nigro

for dong a good job as PRO. He sent us “around the corner” up to buoy marker 6 which proved to be a challenge for some who had to fight the current and some light air. Everyone got in safely though, and the winners for the day were Tommy Jenkins and Christina Campolmi in the Lido, and Kevin Williams and crew in the Day Sailer. The Juniors have been getting some quality time in on the water in preparation for their first race on the 24th. Good luck to all of them. The Ocean Fleet finally got to make up their Winter I, but the weather was such that the last boat was escorted in through the harbor, and then the entrance was closed. Wayne Ratliff in Voyager II was the winner that day. Again, because of the foreboding weather, only 3 boats went out for their Spring I, but so much for forecasting – they had little to fair wind, and Ron May in Whizbang went on to win the day. The latest Portsmouth ratings are out, and there has been one change. The Lido’s rating stayed the same at 98.9, and the Day Sailer’s rating has changed to 98.8 – thanks to Kit Lockwood for getting the data collected and sent. See you on the water, Gail

wish you would reconsider your contributions to the club. Work Day, Tidelands Park Cleanup and Friday Night Happy Hour catering are areas that have come up lately. Many folks are feeling the hardship of so many members choosing not to participate. The Board asks that you give serious thought to getting your name back on the volunteer list. Work Day is attended by approximately 15% of our membership and Happy Hour de-pends on only 43% of members. The manpower provided by our membership is an example of effectively us-ing ourselves to keep the cost of membership at a reasonable level. Our only other option is to hire work done and charge a larger fee for yearly dues. For those who live out of state, perhaps a way to contribute might be in the form of monetary donations to Junior Sailing or Happy Hour Funds, etc. It is the willingness to participate that keeps us going.

The following is a list of ways to volunteer that comes directly from the Membership Applica-tion. Perhaps a reminder of what we agreed to do is fitting at this time: Plan Social Activities, Bartending, Tidelands Park Maintenance, Junior Sailing Advisor, Galley, Wednesday Hamburger Night, Race PRO, Race Committee, Newsletter Publication and distribution, Ocean Race Committee, Computer Data Entry, Summer Sailing Program, Port Captain’s Committee (boat counters, etc.), House Committee (repair and maintenance). All of these are opportunities to contribute in addition to Happy Hour and Work Day.

Personalizing the words of a famous man: ASK NOT WHAT THE CLUB CAN DO FOR YOU, BUT WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR THE CLUB. We are a family of friends who have genuine concerns for the well being of each other and our wonderful Club. Glenda Boatman

Ahhh...the sound of silence. There's been nary a whimper of interest in the treasury posi-tion. Now I'm asking you to think of alternatives, which would require a change in the by-laws. This means it will be very important for everyone to attend the annual meeting in No-vember to vote on any new proposal's). I have two thoughts for consideration. First: increase the (paid) hours of the bookkeeper and the treasurer would become a board position and over-seer rather than hands-on involvement. Second: divide the position into a treasurer and assis-

tant treasurer. The treasurer would be on the board and the overseer, the assistant would be the hands on money person. After a year the assistant treasurer would become treasurer, which would insure backup, and would train the new assistant treasurer. I wonder though, if we can't get ONE person interested how will we get TWO people interested? Think about it... if the bills weren't paid, would there be a club? Any brilliant ideas out there? Kudos and hugs to Laura McCarren. She just happened to be taking a QuickBooks class, she just happened to have some time, and she VOLUNTEERED to help set up the new computer pro-gram. Laura, Kathy and I met for four hours on 4/20 and we are "clicking" on getting the programs con-verted. As I said at the April Board meeting, we are going to take the time necessary to get it right the first time. John and Nia Schmidt are next in line to step in and help complete the membership information so eve-rything rolls out smoothly. Believe it or not, this is almost as much fun as being under full sail on a broad reach! A special thanks to Bruce Masterson and Lex Budge (and others?) for looking and looking, re-searching and bargaining, and finding a reasonably priced, good condition FJ to add to the club's fleet. PICNIC AT ATASCADERO LAKE On May 8, 2005 at 11:00 AM

Come one, come all. Bring your picnic baskets and favorite drinks as well as a little ex-tra to share with everyone and have fun. Desserts will be provided by the committee. Since there is now water in the lake, bring your El Toro’s or whatever floats and sail in the wind. There will be Bocce Ball tournaments supervised by our ever-loving Duncan McQueen.

From your Board of Directors

Realizing that the Masthead is our one constant source of com-munication, starting this month a new article titled “Now Hear This” will highlight the Board meetings. Be sure to read this article for new items, business and/or proposals that affect the membership.

Several Reminders… The club is not responsible for stolen or damaged items that are stored on our property. The club loses revenue when members bring in their own beverages. Members are asked not to bring in their own beverages. Please purchase them from the bar. Ocean fleet pictures on the wall must have a plaque with the boat’s name and the owner’s name. If you have not done so, order your plaque through the Ship’s Store. Dues from six memberships have not been received yet. If your dues are not received, your membership with the club will be cancelled.

Noteworthy Items… There are openings in the back yard and kayak race for storage. See Port Captain Lynn Meissen if you would like to store your boat or kayak here at the club. The club has purchased an FJ boat. A “Name the Boat” contest has been suggested. Stay tuned for further de-tails. Thank you Bruce Masterson. The Day Sailers are in need of a little TLC before the Summer Sailing sessions gets underway. Anyone wishing to help spruce up these boats please see Bruce Masterson. A copy of the Opening Day video is the library. Check it out. The Ship’s Store will soon have silk ties and scarves for sale. Stop by and pick up one or two!

Cruiser’s Anchor Out- Easter Weekend This past Easter weekend, the cruising fleet joined together and anchored out at the Federal Anchorage in Morro Bay. Boats gathered starting Friday night and enjoyed each other’s company through Sunday. Saturday evening began with fun cocktails and appetizers aboard Bob and Jenny Kizziar’s “Moondance.” The group then rallied on the beach at Sandal’s Cove for a bonfire and potluck dinner. Everyone brought delicious food. Sunday was another relaxing day with a fly by of Charlie and Laura McCarren’s “Sur La Mer” sailing through the anchorage. For those who missed the event, be sure to anchor at the federal anchorage sometime. There are great views and good holding grounds. The fleet consisted Brian Crow and family on “Rogue”, Jay and Jane Simonson on “Royal”, John Bodine and Brooke Townsend on “Taylor Rose”, John and Nia Schmidt on “Jovita”, and Bob and Jenny Kizziar on “Moondance.”

A good time was had by all at our March anchor out. Boats participating were Rogue, Taylor Rose, Moon-shadow, Jovita, Royal, and some unnamed small craft. Highlight of the weekend was the Saturday night pot-luck on the beach. We enjoyed a bonfire, compliments of Brian Crow and sons who hauled the wood to the beach. Stories were told and legends remembered. If you missed it hopefully you made the trip to China Har-bor in April. Our next event will be the Memorial day weekend sail to San Simeon. As usual we will have sunset cock-tails on the largest boat along with pot luck hors devours Saturday night. Sunday will be a potluck dinner on the beach if surf permits, if not we will look for a volunteer boat to host. All should remember that plans ashore may not be possible due to surf conditions, although in the past there have been those who have pro-vided great amusement for all of us dry and warm on our boats. If weather conditions prevent us from an en-joyable trip to San Simeon, rather than being all dressed up with no place to go, we will do something in the bay. Hope to see you there. For more info contact me or others who have been there. See you in the water.

—John T. Bodine

Spring 1 Salas First! Jenkins Lucks Out!

I was the first to correct the misperceptions of Jim Orth and Brian Watson. But first let me give you the back-ground. Tom Jenkins and I were tied for 1st going into the last race. My carefully scripted plan was to craftily get off the start line in last place, relentlessly pass the other boats one by boat and then, when Tom would panic at my steady advance and make a mistake I would pass him and come in first, acknowledging the cheers of the throngs of admiring fans. And the plan was working! But after I got by Jim Orth and Brian Watson and I was closing in on the Ryghs suddenly I saw a giant squid heading for people at the public boat ramp. I fearlessly turned for the beast and slashed at it with my switchblade, sending it to the bottom. Alas, by then it was too late to win the race. Later, Jim and Brian were astonished to learn that it was a giant squid, not seaweed that I was battling with. They walked away shaking their heads in wonder that they could have been so mistaken. Although I didn’t win the race, I went home sure in my mind that I had done the right thing. Lawrence of Virtue
