People who are at high risk for severe illness from COVID-19

While COVID-19 can make anyone sick, some Canadians are at risk of more severe disease or outcomes because of their age or if they have other medical conditions. If you are at risk of more severe disease or outcomes, you can take action to reduce your risk of getting sick from COVID-19.

Who is at risk of more severe disease or outcomes?

› Older adults (increasing risk with each decade, especially over 60 years)

› People of any age with chronic medical conditions including:

• Lung disease

• Heart disease

• Hypertension (high blood pressure)

• Diabetes

• Kidney disease

• Liver disease

• Dementia

• Stroke

› People of any age who are immunocompromised , including those:

• With an underlying medical condition (e.g., cancer)

• Taking medications that lower the immune system (e.g., chemotherapy)

› People living with obesity (BMI of 40 or higher)

Be prepared › Learn about COVID-19 and stay informed by visiting canada.ca/coronavirus.

› Visit your provincial/territorial and municipal health websites to keep up to date about COVID-19 in your community.

› Stock up on the supplies you would need if you were to have to stay home for a few weeks, such as groceries, pet food, and cleaning and disinfecting products.

› Talk with your health care provider about how to protect yourself and ensure you have enough of your prescribed medications and medical supplies.

› Prepare to stay connected with others by phone or email.

› Ask family, a neighbour or friend to help with essential errands (e.g., picking up prescriptions, buying groceries).

› Identify which services are available to deliver food or medications to your home.

› Monitor yourself for symptoms.

How to reduce your risk of COVID-19 › If possible, only leave your home for medically necessary appointments.

› Stay away from people who are sick.

› Avoid contact with others, especially those who have travelled or been exposed to the virus.

› If contact cannot be avoided, take the following precautions:

• keep at least 2 metres between yourself and the other people

• give a friendly wave instead of a handshake, kiss or hug

• keep interactions brief

› Clean hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or, if not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol.

Page 4: People who are at high risk forkzadmin.com/Flyers/1372_Flyer_08102020.pdfPeople who are at high risk for severe illness from COVID-19 While COVID-19 can make anyone sick, some Canadians

› Avoid touching your mouth, nose, and eyes and/or food with your hands.

› Carry an alcohol-based hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol when you are outside of your home.

› Avoid touching high-touch surfaces such as doorknobs, handrails and elevator buttons in public places.

› If you need to touch surfaces in public places, use a tissue or your sleeve to cover your hand.

› At least once daily, clean and disinfect surfaces that you touch often, like toilets, bedside tables, doorknobs, phones and television remotes.

› To disinfect, use only approved hard-surface disinfectants that have a Drug Identification Number (DIN). A DIN is an 8-digit number given by Health Canada that confirms the disinfectant product is approved and safe for use in Canada.

› When approved hard surface disinfectants are not available for household disinfection, a diluted bleach solution can be prepared in accordance with the instructions on the label, or in a ratio of 5 millilitres (mL) of bleach per 250 mL of water OR 20 mL of bleach per litre of water. This ratio is based on bleach containing 5% sodium hypochlorite, to give a 0.1% sodium hypochlorite solution. Follow instructions for proper handling of household (chlorine) bleach.

› If they can withstand the use of liquids for disinfection, high-touch electronic devices (e.g., keyboards, touch screens) may be disinfected with 70% alcohol at least daily.

› Remind others who are sick, or may have been exposed to the virus, to stay away.

› Avoid crowds and large gatherings.

› Avoid cruises and non-essential travel outside of Canada.

What to do if you get a symptom of COVID-19

› Symptoms of COVID-19 can: • take up to 14 days to appear after exposure to the virus

• be very mild or more serious

• vary from person to person

› If you develop a symptom, stay home and call your health care provider or local public health unit and tell them about your symptoms.

› Always call ahead before going to see a health provider or health care facility so that they can keep others from being exposed.

› The following symptoms should be considered urgent:

• significant difficulty breathing (e.g., can’t catch breath, gasping)

• chest pain or pressure

• new confusion or difficulty waking up

› If you develop these urgent symptoms, call 911 or your local emergency help line and inform them that you may have COVID-19 and are at high risk for complications.

We can all do our part in preventing the spread of COVID-19. For more information:Canada.ca/coronavirus or contact 1-833-784-4397

Notice to Community

KZ Remembrance Day 2020

Due to the recent upsurge of COVID 19 cases in the Outaouais region, the Remembrance Day Committee regrets to inform the community that there will be no gathering for Remembrance Day this coming November 11. As you are all aware, large gatherings pose a serious health risk.

The Remembrance Day Committee is looking at other alternatives in place of a full ceremony. The Committee will notify the community once a safe alternative is agreed to.

But we want to assure the community that when the COVID 19 virus has run its course and it’s safe to gather again, we will resume our annual Remembrance Day events. Until then, Stay Safe, Stay Strong, Be Good To Each Other.

Migwech,

-The Remembrance Day Committee: Alison Commando, May McDougall, Stephen McGregor.

To mark Remembrance Day 2020, the KZES is pleased to present six Algonquin military profiles from October 8 to November 5. This week’s first profile is William Mitchell. William was a member of the 22nd Battalion French Canadians, the Van Doos. He was wounded by a shell blast at the Somme in 1916, and then by poison gas at Vimy Ridge in 1917. The poison gas at Vimy ended his war for good. He was discharged in January 1919 and lived at a boarding room in Ottawa for a spell before joining the newly created RCMP in 1920. Constable William Mitchell was posted to northern Manitoba. Details on William’s life become somewhat sketchy after that. The little information that exists on William seems to indicate that he had left the RCMP and made his way to Esquimalt, BC in 1922, where he found work as a seasonal lumberjack and factory worker. On the night of January 18, 1943, 15 year old Molly Justice was found murdered along the train tracks in the nearby town of Saanich. The police brought in for questioning a teenage boy who had been seen in the area on the day of Molly’s murder. The boy worked in the same factory as William and fingered him as the killer. William was arrested to stand trial for murder. William defended himself in court and was acquitted, because on the night of the murder, punch clock sheets showed that he worked the evening shift, had never left the factory, and could not have been anywhere near the murder scene. The court compensated William $1,000.00 in damages for the duress he suffered. When the boy was questioned again by the police as to why he lied, his answer was that he didn’t like William Mitchell. The police now suspected the boy as the killer but could never prove it. Molly Justice’s murder remains unsolved to this day. William Mitchell, former soldier and RCMP officer from Kitigan Zibi, passed away on November 8, 1961. He is buried at God’s Acre Cemetery, Esquimalt, BC.

To mark Remembrance Day 2020, the KZES is pleased to present six Algonquin military profiles from October 8 to November 5. This week’s second profile is Frank James Gagnon. The Battle of the Somme was a death struggle between the Allied and German armies that took place over five months in a small space of land that measured 12 kilometers square. Imagine putting two million soldiers into opposing battle lines that measured from the Band Office to the Health Center, the same distance deep, and then subject these soldiers to constant artillery fire day in and night out for five months. In that compressed battlefield, 400,000 Allied and German soldiers were killed. Hundreds of soldiers died every day at the Somme. Into this maelstrom went Cecile Natawesi’s three boys: Simon Kaponicin who enlisted as Sam Gagnon, his two-step brothers Holenger and Frank James; and their brother-in-law Frank Maheux, who was married to their sister Angelique. The British and French armies had been unable to push back the German army. The Canadians were sent in to do it. Holenger and Frank James were members of the 38th Battalion CEF. Their battalion attacked a German trench system code named Desire Trench at one minute after midnight on November 18, 1916. The 38th took Desire Trench and then had to fight off repeated German counterattacks all through the night with flares going up and soldiers fighting hand to hand in some places. The fighting ended at dawn when the Germans withdrew for good. Holenger Gagnon was wounded in the fighting and was evacuated out along with a few hundred others. Frank James was one of the 117 soldiers of the 38th Battalion killed either in the initial assault or in the counterattacks that followed. The 2,300 Canadians who died in this small area between September to November 1916 are buried at Regina Trench Canadian Military Cemetery in France. At the foot of Frank James Gagnon’s military marker is this inscription submitted by his mother Cecile to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission after the war: In memory of a

loving son altho' he rests so far over the seas - Mother
