THE PLOT

The particle of God can change the world – both universally and individually. Just as humans can act as particles of God on each other, and in each other – if they are brought together under exactly the right conditions, that is.

The novel explores a number of theories on the particle of God and the impact it could have on human existence in time and space.

On 7 February 2014 Jeppe Nybroe and his colleague, Rami Aysha, were kidnapped in a Lebanese town on the border to Syria. With his hands bound behind his back and a hood pulled over his head, Nybroe was thrown into the back of a car and driven off. For four weeks he was imprisoned, without the light of day, and subjected to repeated kicking, beating and other abuse. Daily his kidnappers threatened to carve him up alive and send his severed body parts to his family. A fatwa was issued over his head, declaring that his body could be bartered for money – or slaughtered. In the meantime his family and friends desperately tried to raise enough money for his ransom. The initial sum set for his release was 20 million Dollars.

KIDNAPPED is Jeppe Nybroe’s account of these 28 days of confinement. It is an account of physical abuse and the direct negotiations between the kidnappers and his family back home that have been preserved by Skype and broadcast in snippets. It is also a reportage of survival – not just physical survival, but also mental endurance. Josefine Ottesen (1956) is one of Denmark’s most treasured authors. Over the past 30 years, her books have been read by children and young adults from 5 to 18 years of age, and many of her major novels also have enthusiastic adult readers.

The author has received a host of national awards and she has been nominated several times for the ALMA Award. Like her great role model, Hans Christian Andersen, Josefine Ottesen uses popular narrative forms to illuminate modern life, so perhaps it is not entirely coincidental that she lives and works quite close to the great writer’s birthplace on the island of Funen.

The plot takes place in Japan where a Danish biologist, Casper Vitanen, is found hanged in Aokigahara, also known as the Suicide Forest or Sea of Trees, a 35-square-kilometre forest that lies at the northwest base of Mount Fuji. Every year about 100 people take their own lives in this forest, which is also a popular place to get rid of dead bodies. The forest is shrouded in superstition and mystery and is a very spooky place. In the middle of a path in the forest there is a guest house called Green Planet and this is where Daniel Trokic shall stay while the investigation of the death of Casper Vitanen is underway. Casper’s colleagues, a team of biologists that are hired by a pharmaceutical company to look for mushrooms in the potential to cure cancer, also stay at Green Planet. One of them has most likely killed Casper.

Back home in Denmark detective Lisa Kornelius is searching information about the victim that, as it turns out, has behaved rather oddly before his death …
