It was, therefore, hard to ascer- tain the number of deaths. In July this year a man was killed when two cars collided on Ou Kaapse Weg. HOT SUMMER GROOVE

Shakers and moversGARY VAN DYK

@gvdcapejazz

When the beat at the Hot SummerGroove gets going at the Grand-West Arena on Saturday 6 Decem-

ber, notmanywill realise that some of thestars featured have a history that bindsthem since childhood.

Alistair Izobell, Ramaine Barreiro, andbrothers Loukmaan and Emo Adams areno strangers to the stage in South Africa.

They’re known for their performancesin some of the top productions locally andsome have garnered them awards over-seas.

But the beginnings have its roots inMitchell’s Plain some time in the 1980swithadramagroupcalledKindersvannieSes (Children of District Six).

Barreiro remembers those times withfondness, especially the memory of thefour of them forming Nu Fancy.

“Wow! What an exciting time for fourlaaities from the ’Plain,” she says, lookingat a photo of the four of them at the time.

“I think I was about 12, basically a hun-dred years ago! We were all part of a localdrama group called Kinders vannie Ses[they are still running today].

“From what I remember, the Rocketscalled us in to record and before we knewit we were touring with them.”

Emo was only 12, Alistair was 14 andLoukmaan 15.

“Wewere travelling all over SouthAfri-ca, Namibia, little halls in every dorpieand we used to rock Club Fame in ElsiesRiver.

“I think those times convinced us thatit was what we wanted to do for the restof our lives – and we’ve never lookedback.”

Ramaine also reflects that being part ofthis group gave them a good foundationin the entertainment industry.

“We were taught the old school way.Work hard and you’ll get what’s comingto you. Looking at where we all are isproof of that.”

Ramaine was living out of town for afew years but returned home about a yearago, starting her own management andproduction company.

She takes another lookat thephotowith

thoseyoung faces smilingbackather, andremembers that none of it would havebeen possible without some fantastic sup-port.

“We all had parents who supportedwhat we do, we always had people aroundus who had already been doing this foryears to learn from and we had each oth-er,” she says fondly.

Fast-forward to 2014, Ramaine says sheis very excited to be part of the show inDecember.

While it might not be a reunion of thechildhood group, Ramaine is adamant theaudience can expect to see some of thebest entertainment the Western Cape hasto offer.

This is one show not to be missed.Alongwith these four,People’s Post and

sister publication TygerBurger have se-cured a killer line-up for the first HotSummer Groove taking place at Grand-West on Saturday 6 December.

Joining them will be the popular all-fe-male trio Blackbyrd, and the backingband Take Note will make sure all thegrooves are in the right place.

An added bonus at this concert is thatwe will be giving away a car at the show.Your ticket serves as your entry.

Up for grabs is a FAW V2 1.3 worthR100 000.

Since it’s the season of giving, we’ll alsobe donating R5 of each ticket to the Trau-ma Centre in Zonnebloem.

Tickets for theHotSummerGroove costfrom R130 and are available from Com-puticket.

OCEAN VIEW

MONIQUE DUVAL@monique_duval

Shopkeepers and their customers havebecome the latest target for pick-pock-eters and petty thieves in Ocean View.

Resident Basil Levendall says he has hadenough of young men loitering and harass-ing elderly residents. Two weeks ago Levendall went to a super-

ette in Hydra Avenue to buy treats for hisyoung relatives. He explains after receiving the change, he

put it in his jacket and zipped the pocket. Butin a blink of an eye a young man was stand-ing next to him and had his hands in Leven-dall’s pocket.“He grabbed the littlemoney I had and ran

away,” he says.Levendall informed the shopkeeper who,

he claims, said there was nothing he coulddo.“The shop has burglar bars and the shop-

keepers are safe but the customers are not.It is really disturbing as elderly residentsand children are at risk. They should havesecurity guards,” he says.Duringavisit to the store,managerBhuiy-

an Humayan explains petty thieves are anongoing issue. He explains the young men seen loitering

in the area are just waiting to “rob some-one”.In addition, he says, theypester customers

by begging for loose change.Humayan also says there have been vio-

lent incidents at the superette.“One day two guys came in and asked for

free stuff. When we said ‘no’ they startedthrowing bricks at the staff and have brokenhooka pipes. This is why we have thisfence,” he explainswhile pointing to thebur-glar bars.He says they have called Ocean View po-

lice who attend to the complaints but ex-plains the thieves “run away”.“When they see the police coming up the

road, they run away. The police stay for awhile but then they have to leave. That iswhen these guys come back,” he adds.AsHumayan speaks toPeople’s Post an an-

gry woman shopper says she has had“enough of these guys”.She explains her daughter was recently

robbed while walking home. The woman, who asked not to be named,

says the men often carry knives and havebeen seen threatening school children.“It is disgusting. My daughter is so scared

now. Why must they do this when we workhard for our money?” she asks.Ocean View Police Station commander

Lieutenant-Colonel JakobusAugus says dueto the drug scourge in the area many of therobbers could be drug users. He says people walking to shops are tar-

gets as they have cash in their possession.Augus urges residents to take a good look

at the robbers and give police a complete de-scription. “This will help us to identify whois behind the robberies.Wewill alsomonitor

Residents have until today (Tues-day 4 November) to have theirsay on the legalisation of the

decks at the Brass Bell Restaurant. This follows the completion of the

draft report for the application forthe legalisation of the decks. The construction of the restau-

rant’s decks sparked an outcry fromresidents who claim their access tothe City of Cape Town’s tidal pools inKalk Bay were prohibited.Protests were held by residents

from the Fisherman’s Village whoraised their concerns about access tothe pools. At the time they claimed they were

not consulted and the erection of thedecks led to the “loss of a publicamenity”.However, Brass Bell owner Tony

White contested this claiming the ar-ea was derelict.Doug Jeffery Environmental Con-

sultants were appointed to create thereport.Following the release of a back-

ground document, residents were re-quired to register as an interestedand affected party. As part of the report a Social Im-

pact Assessment (SIA) was complet-ed by Tony Barbour EnvironmentalConsulting and Research. In a summary of the key issues, the

SIA gives an insight into various top-ics including the privatisation of apublic amenity, impact on access anddignity, socio-economic benefits andthe illegal structures and lackof plan-ning permission. In conclusion, the SIA says the use

of the public area has been lost dueto the establishment of a private res-taurant.It also highlights the Memoran-

dum of Agreement between the res-taurant, the City of Cape Town andthe Passenger Rail Agency of SouthAfrica (Prasa). The SIA suggests the agreement be

modified to include a clausewhich al-lows the public to use the tables andbenches at the Beach at the Bell.It says the public should be allowed

to sit at the tables without being obli-gated to purchase anything from therestaurant.“This would not apply over the

lunch period from 12:00 to 15:00. Dur-ing this period the public using thebenches and tables associated withthe Beach at the Bell would be re-quired to order either a drink or ameal,” it reads. The assessment further recom-

mends signage be erected to commu-nicate this.Public participation on the draft

report ends today and comments re-ceived will form part of the final re-port.Once completed the final report

will be sent to parties to commentover a 21-day period. These comments will then be in-

cluded in the report to be submittedto the provincial department of envi-ronmental affairs and developmentplanning.V Do you think the decks at the Brass Bellshould be legalised? Starting with the word“Post”, SMS your thoughts to 32516. SMSescost R1.

Planningneeds inputMany of us in the Far South peninsulahave been concerned for a long timeabout growth in this unique area out-stripping services like roads and sew-erage capacity as well as threateningcultural and environmental featureswhich help sustain life and the econo-my.The mayor agreed with us that a

study to define closely the most press-ing concerns was important and thatan acceptable way of doing this wouldbe via a Strategic Environmental As-sessment (SEA) that will help informplanning decisions in future. The SEA has now been commis-

sioned by theCity and the consultants, the CSIR, have alreadymetwith sever-al ratepayer and civic groups who col-lectivelymakeup theFar SouthPenin-sulaCivicForum(FSPCF) to get initialsuggestions. To make sure that as many commu-

nity voices as possible are heard be-fore the study is finalised the CSIRteam would especially like a short in-formation sharing session or two withinterested and community-involvedpeople from Masiphumelele, OceanView and Red Hill in the near future. They are invited to contact FSPCF

chairperson Patrick Dowling([email protected]; 084 966 1249) ordeputy chairperson Marti Weddepohl([email protected]; 072 345 3939).The FSPCF will keep the general

public informed about the SEA proc-ess and opportunities for input fromthose interested.PATRICK DOWLING,FSPCF chairperson

Your SMSes.We have been living in council flats formore than 40 years, while residents of Site5 in Masiphumelele have been living therefor only four years. After this short period, they are able to own it. Brian, Ocean View

. Criminals are enriching themselveswith the government-approved sale of liquorin residential areas. Children have easy ac-cess to alcohol because there is a legal she-been nearby. I suggest they take their busi-nesses to industrial areas or shopping com-

plexes. Concerned parent. The City should also give the ECDs a

chance, because it is for our kids after all.Nicky

. Rights to run the building should begranted to a group of ECDs wanting to oper-ate under a consortium.

. I strongly feel the ECDs should get thebuilding. Jaco, Ocean View

. I think it should go to ECDs. They needit. Our community will benefit.

. Please give the place to the children ofOcean View.

.Miller’s Point should go back to being

the beautiful spot itwas. The boat-launchingfacility should be removed, all the ugly fenc-ing taken down, the bleak parking area forcars and boat trailers reduced to a car parkand made more attractive with trees. Therest of the car park should be turned into pic-nic areas and the razor wire below the BlackMarlin should be removed.Alex Potter,Mur-doch Valley

. I would like to enrol with the stonema-sons housing project. How do I qualify andwho do I need to consult? MTM, Kalk Bay

. OceanViewwon’t benefitwhen it comesto improvements. It’s always Masi.

Teams in the top two tiers of South Afri-can football will return to action thisweek following a postponement of all

matches in memory of slain goalkeeperSenzo Meyiwa.

In the Premier Soccer League (PSL), AjaxCape Town will travel to Pretoria to face theUniversity of Pretoria at Tuks Stadium to-morrow (Wednesday 5 November).

The Urban Warriors, who are still in sec-ond place on the log, will be determined toimprove on their previous outing – a 4-1 de-feat at the hands of Orlando Pirates in theTelkom Knockout Cup.

Their last two encounters against Tuks inthe PSL were somewhat of a humdrum af-fair, with both matches ending in goallessstalemates in October last year and March.

Roger de Sa’s troops have managed topick up 17 points from their nine matches,

and will look to collect maximum points inthe capital city to stay in touch with logleaders Kaizer Chiefs and remain ahead ofthe other teams in the top five.

Meanwhile, FC Cape Town will be the on-ly team in action in the National First Divi-sion (NFD) tomorrow, as they travel to Ri-chard’s Bay to take on Thanda Royal Zuluat the Umhlathuze Sports Complex.

Friday evening sees yet anotherCapeder-by, when second-placed Milano Unitedtackle Cape Town All Stars at Philippi Sta-dium. On Saturday 8 November, Santos FCwill take on Witbank Spurs at the PumaRugby Stadium.

Vasco da Gama FC will travel up northto take on Jomo Cosmos at Vaal Universityof Technology on Sunday 9 November and,in a return fixture, FC Cape Town will hostThanda Royal Zulu at NNK rugby Stadiumin Parow.V View both the NFD and PSL logs, as well as thefixtures and starting times, at www.psl.co.za.
