Grassy Park police station hasreported an increase of 68%in attempted murder cases in

the past year.According to the latest crime sta-

tistics, 94 cases of attempted mur-der were reported in the last finan-cial year.The police also reported 24%

more murders in the past yearbringing the total to 41 murders,compared to 33 cases in the previ-ous year.These increaseswere shared last

week when the national crime sta-tistics were revealed.The station also experienced a

reported increase of 62% in the ille-gal possession of firearms and am-munition with 55 cases reported inthe past year to March.Grassy Park Community Police

Forum (CPF) spokesperson PhilipBam says the statistics are “not animprovement by any means”.“Although the rape figurehasde-

creased (by 30%), we are still sit-ting with a problem with regard toproperty crimes. House break-insare still a huge concern,” he says.He believes police must change

their strategy to a more proactiveapproach.“We need to look at how to pre-

vent crimes instead of reacting tothem. Property-related crimes re-sult in the elderly suffering be-cause the focus is elsewhere. Policeconcentrate on gangsterism and

drugs and this takes away resour-ces from the ordinary crimes,”Bam explains.He says he is proud of the sta-

tion’s successes but wants the po-lice to tackle a problembeforehandso that there “will be no crime toreport on”.“We need to get to a point where

police activity is not dictated bycriminals. It must the other wayaround. One example can bewherepeople are selling counterfeitgoods right opposite the police sta-tion. This shows that these peoplehave no respect for the police andthey don’t think much of the law,”Bam says.

Ten years after the Treknet comic stripsfirst appeared in print, local cartoonists

Dave Gomersall and Gavin Thomson havelaunched a book, Tales from Treknet, withtheir favourite strips from the years of beingpublished.The popular comic strip first appeared in

People’s Post and is based on the fishing cul-ture in Fish Hoek. Gomersall explains thattreknet fishing encapsulates the culture ofFish Hoek.“Every topic gets sucked into the treknet.”

Local is lekkerAlthough inspired by False Bay locals and

fishermen and Gomersall’s own sailing ex-perience, the characters developed over theyears, he says.Gomersall and Thomson met each other

while Gomersall was searching for an illus-trator for a children’s book he was writing.

He and Thomson soon discovered a sharedlove for comics, and the book was shelvedto give way to a new partnership.“I can’t spell and he can’t draw,” jokes

Thomson as he sums up their relationship.They started out with a strip about a boy

who sails around the world, but were askedto produce amore local strip for the newspa-per.Many of the stories are shaped by sailing

trips Gomersall took, with Thomson oftenworking with him via satellite phone whilehe was sailing across the Atlantic.“But I always wrote two months ahead,

just in case I died,” Gomersall says.The partnership started out when local

cartooning was still in its infancy, Thomsonexplains.“When we were starting out, cartooning

was a real mystery. There was not a lot togo on or people to ask,” he says.But the series grew in popularity and was

even the subject of a TV show aired on Kyk-NET in 2013. The pair had to sort through

over 2500 strips in selecting content for thebook.They have written several other comic

strips, with some being published in Nor-way, Sweden, Namibia and the UnitedStates. Their work has, and still does, ap-pear in daily newspapers across the coun-try.

Child’s playBoth Gomersall and Thomson had al-

ways loved comics, with both reading themas children and always doodling duringschool.“I must have been drawing all through

school,” saysThomson. “I never really tookit seriouslybecause it never occurred tomethat I could make a living from it.”Today they give talks at schools and are

always amazed at how children identifywith the characters, Thomson says.“Education through pictures is easier to

understand,” explains Gomersall, who hasbeen approached to provide cartoons fortextbooks, on which comprehension testsare based.Thomson says: “Kids were told comics

are junk in the past. But reading anythingis good.”

The cartoonists have made sure Treknetremains a family comic strip, to the extentthat they almost passed down their first dai-ly newspaper gig because it was Son, whichfeatured weekly photos of almost nakedwomen.The editor agreed to run the strip from

Monday to Thursday, and not on Fridaywith the pin-up photo.

Just go for itTales of Treknet has been self-published

after the cartoonists found there was littleinterest from local publishers.They asked fans for pledges and sold ad-

vertising on the back cover, which helpedfund the publication.“The last ten years has taught me to just

go for it,” says Thomson. “Fear of not suc-ceeding only holds you back.”They hope the comic strip’s next debut

will be on the big screen.“We’d love to do something in animation

The Retreat swimming pool constructionis expected to be completed by the end of

November. This is according to BelindaWalker, City ofCapeTownmayoral commit-teemember for community services and spe-cial projects amid concerns of residentsabout continuous delays.

People’s Post previously reported thatconstruction at the pool was set to be com-pleted by December (“In the swim”, 2 Sep-tember 2014).A resident, who lives close to the pool and

spoke to People’s Post on condition of ano-nymity, says she hopes the pool will be com-pleted soon as the festive season is aroundthe corner.“We have been using this facility for years

and it seems that there is no rush to get itcompleted. Where are we expected to swimor cool off? We feel that our community isneglected and the contractors are taking for-ever to get done. This is not fair to this com-munity,” she says.Another resident who shares her senti-

ment says he has been watching the projectclosely and it seems that not much effort is

being put into completing it on time.“This project started in 2013 and, look,

it’s 2015.Will it ever be finished and ready?I have huge doubts. I suggest residents findalternatives and forget about using the fa-cility this holiday period,” he says.Walker says some repair work had to be

done before the roof sheeting could be in-stalled.“On inspection of themain structure, the

consulting teamnoted that someworkcom-pleted by the contractor that did not meetthe required standard of work as specifiedby the engineer,” she says.“The repair works that were required by

the contractor delayed the completion ofthe work recently. The installation of theroof sheeting is planned to commence to-wards mid to end October.”Walker says the current cost of the

project is about R7.4m and penalties arebeing levied on the contractor for the latecompletion of the works and that all provi-sions of the construction contract are beingused to ensure that the construction workis completed as quickly as possible. “Theproject team is doing everything in theirpower to achieve this, but without compro-mising on quality of workmanship.”

Seniors from around the city gathered attheRylands civic centre onThursday last

week to take part in a community initiativeto celebrate the International Day for OlderPersons.The event was organised by the City of

Cape Town’s social development and earlychildhood department, which teamed upwith Age in Action.Over 400 senior citizens gathered to find

out about ways to improve their quality oflife in their later years.Suzette Little, mayoral committee mem-

ber for social development and early child-hood development, said that the event wasaimed at promoting healthy living and ac-tive ageing whilst also raising awarenessabout the host of services the City offers itsseniors.“As part of the social and early childhood

development directorate, we raise aware-ness among our seniors abouthealthy livingand healthy choices at their age,” she said.“We create these platforms in different ar-

eas where our seniors can come out and talkto us, but at the same time we can give theminformation about our home-based care op-portunities, about what the City is offering

so that they don’t sit with these issues andthat there is somebody that they can be re-ferred to.”One of the attendees, Jasmien Sauls (65),

said she enjoyed themorning and commend-ed the staff on their friendliness, while an-other attendee, Marjorie Fassie (67), sharedher joy at being out of the house. She saidthe occasion was a real outing for her.

Ebrahim Khan (68) said that Little’s pre-sentation was very informative, especiallypertaining to the indigent grant.Ismail Osman (76) was excited at the

prospect of volunteeringhis timeandknowl-edge to nearby schools in the Athlone areato help children to hone their literacy andnumeracy skills. Hewas also pleasantly sur-prised by what the City had planned for

them as a group.Little said that despite the City’s efforts,

abuse towards the elderly was becoming fartoo frequent.“The sad part is that families are aware

of it. We are really appealing to familymem-bers to get involved. We have received com-plaints about our seniors, especially duringthis period with the pension being paid out;we see that our seniors are abused a littlebit more than usual.“It’s not always the hitting and the beat-

ing, but in the manner in which they aretreated.” She also said the programmesweregeared towards trying to help seniors speakout more about their problems.“Our seniors don’t like talking about it.

They come from that era where they don’tshare their problems, so we try and createthat platform where we tell them that it isokay to let us know so that we can visit.“We have visited a few homes where we

have spoken to the family members, wherewehave interacted andgot the police and theneighbourhood watch involved and itstopped, because somebody was watching.”“That is all that we need to do, it is really

to let the people know that the seniors arenot out there on their own, they are not liv-ing in isolation and that there is somebodywho cares for them.”

Prevention is better than cure.As we contemplate the latest crime

statistics, released last week, one can’thelp but feel depressed by the bleakpicture painted in these figures.And even more disconcerting is the

speculation that the statistics are notaccurate – either due to manipulationor due to a lack of reporting crime.But aside from calling for independ-

ent audits and task teams to tacklecrime, we need to take a long, hardlook at our communities.Surely preventing crime is easier

than finding solutions to stop it, espe-cially as it spirals ever further out ofcontrol?

Police are often unable and unwill-ing to respond to many calls – andwhen they do, their lives are on theline.We see courts unable to copewithcase loads and forced to throw out allbut the most serious of crimes. Wehave seen prisons overflowing, withmany prisoners never reformed.It’s long past the time when we sim-

ply react to crime.Weneed to start raising a generation

that never wants nor needs to turn tocrime. This not only includes raisingchildrenwith a strongmoral compass,but also creating an environmentwithopportunities other than crime.Children need to be educated – and

not just with a matric certificate – sothat they can findwork and realise theconsequences of their actions.Jobs need to be created, by you and

me, with internship opportunities andlearnerships for the youth to takethem off the streets and give them a fu-ture.Children need to be raised in homes

with good rolemodels (that’s you,Momand Dad) so that they don’t aspire togangsterism. The time for leaving thisto government and the police haspassed. It’s up to us now to create thesechanges.

‘Hazard move’ is driving me crazyI have for many years noticed a tenden-cy in regard to our minibus taxisindicating [as] they are pulling off theroad to the left or right to pick up ordrop off passengers.The strangest part of this action is

that they put on their hazards and,without other signals, pull off in front ofmotorists to the left or right side of theroad. These last two days it became evenmore apparent when I drove behind afew minibus taxis – all of a sudden ongoes the hazards and now I and otherroad users must guess: Are they going tostop dead in front of me or othermotorists or somewhere else?Motorists must guess if they are going

to pull off to the left or right of the road.Is there some unwritten law, or law

we the Jan Publiek are not aware of,that allows minibus taxis to do thishazard move or is there a school forminibus taxis that tells drivers thatwhen you are driving you and you alonemust put on your hazards when youintend to pull off next to the road?How many times have I almost

knocked into a minibus taxi because ofthis practice and how so not many other

motorists?I was taught that when Itravel on a road in a vehicle and I wantto turn left, I put on my left indicator. Ican understand if a minibus taxi driverindicates left if he wants to load oroffload passengers on the left side of theroad and when he has stopped, puts onhis hazards – that makes perfect sense.My question is: Has the right training

been interpreted in the wrong way?Please, traffic department, clear this

up with us and the minibus taxi indus-try.

Aschoolboy from Greenhavenhas set his sights on being thefirst South African Formula

One racing driver since JodyScheckter in 1980.

Thaqib Meyer (11) is a Grade 5pupil at Islamia College in Lans-downe and has taken to kartinglike a duck to water.

He started karting from the ageof seven and says that while beingan athlete and soccer player, noth-ing gives him the adrenaline rushof karting, something he learnedby watching his parents and grand-father in his formative years.

“My father takes me to all mypractise sessions and races. He in-spires me to keep doing my best onthe track and he gives me tips onhow to improve.”

His rolemodels are Lewis Hamil-ton and Gugu Zulu after witness-ing Zulu, one of South Africa’s fore-most rally drivers, in action.

“I have watched many YouTubevideos of Lewis Hamilton when hewas karting and my favourite oneis of him starting at the back of thefield and winning the race.”

Meyer says he loves racing andprefers the real thing instead of sit-ting in front of the television play-ing racing games.

“My father takes me to practiseduring the week. We work on get-ting in and out of corners faster sothat my lap times can improve,” hesays.

“I am usually relaxed on race

days. My father does a lot of thepreparation on the day to get mykart race-ready, my own race crew.It’s always fun to watch him run-ning around,” he jokes.

He says that his most memorable

moment was when he brought hislap time down to 47 seconds. He isaiming to consistently finish in thetop three of his class.
