The body of the man, Colin Prins, was found in a car at the intersection of Strand- fontein and Boundary roads on Thursday night. He had been shot several times and died on the scene. Philippi police’s Warrant Officer Ettiene Conradie says the man had recently been “re- leased from jail and was a member of the Mongrol gang”. “We believe the shooting was a retaliation by the Six-bob gang. A few weeks ago Six-bob gang members were killed and now they are probably looking for revenge,” says Con- radie. Witnesses said a vehicle pulled up in front of the Opel car, three of the occupants jumped out and randomly shot at the car. Two other men believed to have been in the Opel jumped out of the car and ran towards Philippi when they heard the shots, police say. The men have not been found and no ar- rests have been made. Police believe the man who was killed is from Ottery. Conradie says the gang violence from Grassy Park is spilling over to Philippi. “The incident took place on our border, but the drug turf war is in Grassy Park.” Five men who were shot dead in Phumlani Village (“Gang war in Phumlani Village”) are also believed to have been killed over gang drug turf war. All were allegedly either in the Mongrol or Six-bob gangs. SA National Civic Organisation (Sanco) secretary Eric Balebanye says Phumlazi Vil- lage residents are scared to leave their house. “Most of the shootings happen at night, so people don’t come out at night,” he says. Balebanye says the police are acting like private alarm companies by reacting to vio- lence. “ADT comes out to the scene after an alarm has gone off. That is how the police are working. They come after something big hap- pens.” The solution, says Balebanye, is simple. “Police need to be in the area constantly to try and prevent bad things from happening.” An Ottery resident, Dalecia February, says gang violence was never that big an issue in Ottery, but things are now different. “The gangsters are really taking over and it is sad to see innocent people get hurt along the way,” says an incensed February. “I really don’t see why these gangsters can’t just go to a field and have it out there. They should kill each other instead of shooting in- nocent bystanders. “I lost my brother in gang shootings three years ago and the pain never goes away. He was an innocent bystander probably mistak- en for a gangster.” Conradie says police are working to keep the Philippi community safe. “Hanover Park also falls in our precinct so the ongoing gang violence there is also an is- sue we are trying to deal with.” He says there are constant visible policing patrols and raids. “We try to patrol around the clock and we also get help from Metro po- lice.” Anyone with information about the shoot- ing can contact the police on (021) 690 1500 or 0800 1011. Over 50 Years of Real Estate Excellence

When reality bytes backWhen reality bytes backDear reader,

Like the thousandsofhope-fuls who enter Idols eachyear, most of us believe we’restars. And why not?

After all, each of us has aninteresting life story to telland if movies were made ofthese, we would all be stars.

Real life tales aside, there’snothing more powerful thanhaving a dream, or in thecase of most Idols contestantswho clearly can’t carry atune, more misguided. Despite being told inthe most candid manner by the show’s judg-es that they can’t sing, the delusional mass-es return, year after year.

And suckers for punishment, such as I,allow them to assault my senses, year afteryear.

Idols is one of many reality shows fol-lowed by millions of voyeuristic TV view-

ers, greedy for full-on glimps-es into others’ lives. It’s hardto believe that with the adventof TV back in the 70s, rivetingviewing was provided by thesedate likes of shows like Dal-las and Kojak and truly inno-cent children’s programmessuch as Heidi and Black Beau-ty.

Back in District Six, my par-ents were among the first toacquire a black-and-whiteBlaupunkt telly, for which mymom paid all of R450 cash; im-

pressive! This meant that on Dallas nights, rela-

tives from as far as Walmer Estate traipsedto our home to keep up with the doings ofthe Ewings. It’s painful, but I still remem-ber the theme music to this and other 70sTV programmes; almost as well as I remem-ber my older cousin loudly crunching hisway through a bag of carrots while the rest

of us strained to hear every word comingout of this wonderful wooden box.

Now we are spoilt for choice and consum-ers seem content with nothing short of a fullmenu of reality viewing, the full bouquetserved instantly.

This is symptomatic of human behav-iour, seldom satiated. And despite the end-less options 21st century technology hasushered in, we don’t stop wanting the nextnew cellphone or computer.

The big old brick-of-a-block Nokia cell-phone everyone had to have when cell-phones were a novelty, is now sneered at.Facebook and other social network siteshave given truth to the term “imaginaryfriends” as some people clock up thousandsof “www friends”; while at the same timeprofessing to leading very lonely (meaningreal) lives.

And when you’ve had enough of your vir-tual friends, after a virtual tiff, you simplyboot them off BB or FB - no questions asked.

Don’t getmewrong. I’mahuge fanof tech-

nology and its many benefits such as cost-ef-fective communication, access to informa-tion and connection to others.

I have no desire to return to the days ofpenpals and handwritten letters, but wheredo we draw the line?

Some people take social networking toscary levels; broadcasting their painful ex-periences on a myriad of digital platforms.Others cowardly end relationships viaemail. Then there are the inherent dangersthis exposure brings, to the impressionableand vulnerable. But who am I to judge whenI too have become enslaved to modern tech-nology and cannot imagine being withoutmy nifty gadgets and the endless possibili-ties it brings?

LILLIAN AMOS

AN INFORMAL settlement’s residentssay they are fed up with people usingtheir area as a dumping ground.

Maria Solomon of Canal Walk informalsettlement in Blackbird Avenue says a bak-kie comes around at least once a week todump dozens of tyres in their little neigh-bourhood.

“Every week they come here and dump thetyres and they pay some of our people R50to do it. Obviously the people are going totake the money because they are poor anddon’t have any other way of making money,”she says.

Solomons adds that misfits occasionallyset the tyres alight, and worries that a firecould easily spread to their homes.

“Tyres are very flammable, and people al-so use it to secure their roofs. If a fire breaksout, there’s no way of stopping it.”

Last year, People’s Post published an arti-cle about neighbouring Parkwood beingused as a tyre dumping ground (“Parkwoodbecomes ‘tyre-wood’”, People’s Post, 15 No-vember)

In the article, residents said Parkwoodlooked more like “tyre-wood” because of allthe tyres that had been strewn around thearea.

Despite attempts to use the tyres for recre-ational purposes such as garden boundariesand swings, there were just too many, leav-ing any open space blackened.

Since then, the City of Cape Town hascleaned up the entire area, but it seems theproblem is rearing its head again.

Local ward councillor Melanie Arendsesays residents need to report incidents oftyre dumping.

“In May, the City installed electricity at

the Canal Walk informal settlement. Nowthat that problem is solved, the tyre problemcomes along again.”

Arendse believes contractors, hired bytyre companies to dispose of old tyres, areto blame.

“The contractors are supposed to take thetyres to be disposed of, but they throw it herebecause it’s easier for them; they don’t needto drive far,” she says.

Arendse says she further investigated byjotting down the registration number of thebakkie that had been off-loading the tyres.

“We had the license number but it wasthen discovered that the vehicle is not regis-tered. So now we’re back to square one.”

The City says illegal dumping remains oneof its biggest challenges.

On the City’s website it states that only10 % of old tyres in the metropole are dis-posed of at refuse disposal sites.

It also states that it has, on several occa-sions, appealed to the National Departmentof Environmental Affairs to tackle the chal-lenge of tyre disposal.

Rustim Keraan, the City’s Director of theSolid Waste Management Department says:“Efforts are underway to establish a levy onnew tyres to assist in the disposal of tyres.”

The City also believes that the correct dis-posal of tyres will minimise tyre burning, which is an all too familiar sight across CapeTown, for the recovery of scrap metal.

Keeran adds that there is one recyclingcompany in Atlantis and that the City’s land-fill sites does accept tyres, but preferably cutinto quarters.

Residents are encouraged to report illegaldumping and to request the dumped materi-al to be removed by calling the City’s Cus-tomer Care Line on 0860 103 089, fax(021) 400 4302 or email to [email protected]

Residents are all tyred out

TYRE MARKS: The tyres are used to border a garden but there are just too many to use for recreational purposes.

Should theWCED closeschools?DAVID MANN

THE threat of closure hanging over 27schools has caused uproar among Peo-ple’s Post readers.

A high drop-out rate, poor quality ofteaching and failure to increase pupil num-bers are among the reasons given by the pro-vincial education department to closeschools. A decision will be made later thisyear. Some readers feel pupils may turn tocrime, while others say the education de-partment should address the issues ratherthan closing schools. Teachers also have toshoulder some of the responsibility, says an-other reader.

BAD TEACHERS: Nerissa Berry says the level of education simplyisn’t good enough.“The Department ofEducation needs to educate the teachers before they can educatethe pupils. The teachers aren’t qualifiedenough and that’s whyall these children aredropping out. What’sthe point of going to school if you aren’t goingto learn?” Photos: David Mann

OVERCROWDED: Faidah Abrahams feelsclosing down theschools will result inthe learners turning tocrime. “They need tobe opening moreschools – not closingit. Most of theseschools are overcrowded and if they closethen all those learners have no choice but toturn to crime for money.”

SURVIVAL: Jaylan Jafthafeels strongly about theissue. He has many cousins who dropped out ofschool and are now struggling to make a living.“Children need an education to survive in theworld. Not having an education in this country especially can put youstraight on the streets.”

SCHOOL A NEED:Joanne Maasdorpsays: “Something likethis is very close tomy heart. When I wasa child I wanted tostudy, but my familydidn’t have the money. These childrenhave a right to go toschool; they need togo to school.”

ON THE STREETS: Heinrich Barendse says nothaving an educationcan lead to a bad future.“If these children havenowhere to learn theywill end up on thestreets doing drugs. Idropped out of schoolwhen I was younger andrealised my life washeading in a bad direction so I did everythingI could to get a proper education.”

UNFAIR: Terence Masamuna believes it would beunfair to the learners. “Ican understand learnersare dropping out and theschools don’t haveenough learners, but a lotof them still want to bethere and to learn so theycan’t close the schoolsdown. That’s not fair.”

Since coming to the home, most have left that lifestyle behind, but are left with the marks as tattoos are away of physically affiliating with groups.” She says the coverups, by Tattoo Muse, are a wonderful way for many of their youth to make a symbolic change to representthe hard work they have put in to change their lives. Cops’ response ‘poor’TARRENLEE HABELGAARN

POLICE response to phone calls in CapeTown needs to be addressed urgently.

Residents of the Grassy Park area are frus-trated and have been complaining about thepoor service they receive in regards to tele-phone calls not being answered at theGrassy Park police station.

Community Policing Forum (CPF) execu-tive member and chairperson of Lotus Riv-er, Ottery and Grassy Park Residents Asso-ciation, Phillip Bam says: “It is not fair thatthe community must struggle to get hold ofthe police. What must be done should bedone to fix this problem.”

“The police are suppose to be the life lineof the community yet they are neglecting todo their job to thebest of their ability.Acom-munity member shouldn’t have to strugglewhole day trying to get hold of a police sta-tion. If a resident is calling the police station,it is most likely an emergency and thereforethey should be attended to in that manner.”

“One of the main reasons for this problemis the fact that police stations numbers arelisted wrong in directories.”

Bam furthers says, “It seems to be a grow-ing and common problem amongst the CapeTown police stations in general and we mustinsist that the police answer their phones.”

People’s Post’s attempt to get hold ofGrassy Park police turned out to be futile.

Price hike shocksLILLIAN AMOS

WITH the new financial year in fullswing, the City of Cape Town’s electricitytariff increase has become a reality.

Since Sunday 1 July, consumers have tocough up, on average, 11 % more for electric-ity.

The City says the tariff hike has been putin place to “construct and maintain” equip-ment that transforms the power supply sothat it meets customer’s needs, supplies pub-lic lighting and provides secondary supportservices.

The City’s electricity services departmentis the link between Eskom and consumers.

The City has two different tariff structuresfor residential properties – Lifeline and Do-mestic.

The Lifeline tariffs which apply to house-holds where electricity usage amounts to 450kilowatt hours (kWh) or as is more common-ly referred to, 450 units on average permonth.

Residents who qualify for the lifeline tariffreceive free basic electricity allocations eve-ry month. Those who use on average morethan 450kWh a month are charged the do-mestic tariff. In essence, the more electricityyou use, the more you pay.

There is however also a sliding scale at-tached to the cost of electricity in the Lifelinecategory, engineered to drive down electrici-ty consumption.

With the price increases, residents whofall into the lifeline tariff category will payjust under 65 cents a kWh/unit for the first150 units that they buy (although the City ef-fectively pays for the first 50 units which arefree under the lifeline tariff).

If you buy;-between 150 and 350 units, the price per

unit is just under 90 cents, which is an 11 %increase.

-between 350 and 600 units, there is a 9.9 %increase

-more than 600 units it will cost 18.7 %more.

The City of Cape Town has urged consum-ers to buy only the amount of electricity theyanticipate to use in a particular month, be-cause excess electricity will be charged at ahigher rate.

It has also urged customers to try and saveelectricity where possible, in order to mini-mize their consumption.

Gadieja Ismail from Parkwood makessoup for the children from the communityevery week. She also runs a catering busi-ness and says the new price hike will defi-nitely leave a hole in her pocket.

“I have been cooking for many years, andnow it seems my passion has to be curbedbecause I already spend so much on electric-ity. Now I’m going to have to scale downdrastically.”

Here are a couple of ways you can saveelectricity:

.Turn geyser temperature down to 60°Celsius.

Maintaining the temperature at 60°C usesless electricity than maintaining a tempera-ture of 70°C. Don’t drop it below 60°C forhealth reasons.

.Use less hot water, for example; showerinstead of bath, and take shorter showers.Only fill the kettle as much as you need it.Wash a full load of dishes, rather than onedish at a time.

.Switch off equipment when not in useTurn appliances off at the wall plug, rather

than leaving themonstandbyas this can stilldraw about 20 percent or more of normalelectricity use.

.Install an efficient shower head. CapeTown water bylaws limit shower flow ratesto no more than 10 litres per minute. To testthis at home, hold a bucket under the show-er-head for 12 seconds.

Measure the amount of water within thebucket with a measuring jug. If there is morethan two litres then your shower-head is in-efficient.

.Insulate the geyser.A geyser “blanket” maximises heat reten-

tion..Install efficient lighting.

The Dave Spence Memorial 10 km race presented by the RCS Gugu-lethu Athletic Club which forms part of Western Province Athlet-ics PowerAde League series will take place will take place on Sun-day at the NY49 stadium in Gugulethu.

According to organiser Marshall Moiloa, the popular townshiprace was started three years after their celebrated coach DaveSpence passed away in 2009.

“Dave used to be a coach and mentor not only for me, but manytalented young athletes from the townships. He was the one whourged me to start up the club. He put in a lot of time and effortand played a key role in the establishment of the Gugulethu Athlet-ic club. It’s great that his legacy can live on with a race that isheld in his memory,” Moila said proudly.

“A lot of people were previously scared to come into the town-ships. But I think that kind of stereotypical thinking has changeddrastically in recent times. We are expecting a huge turnout thisyear because the race forms part of WPA’s PowerAde League se-ries.

“The race starts at 07:30 and the 4.2 km fun run at O7:35 about150m from the NY49 Stadium next to the Gugulethu Mall. It’s runover a fast and flat course and is perfect for runners aiming fora personal best time.

“ At Manenberg Police Station the runners will turn left atDuinefontein Road past the Nyanga Junction Shopping Center. The route then takes at left turn atLansdowne road over the bridgethrough the township and back to thefinish at the NY49 stadium. We havedecided to make the cut-off time forthe 10km is two and a half hours toaccommodate the walkers who are al-so welcome,” explained Moila.

Registration will take place from05:45 - 07:00. Entry for the 10km is R35for licensed athletes. Temporary li-cences cost R20. The first 1 000 finish-ers will get medals.

Sailing centre aims for the topGRADUATES of development sailing in CapeTown’s Southern Peninsula are gearing up to takeon the most prestigious sailing competition inSouthern Africa – the Lipton Challenge Cup 2012.

Two sailors from the Zeekoevlei Sailing Centre, Mar-co Tobin and Le-roy Rudolf, will be heading up theirteam of sailors from various Cape Town sailing schoolsat the Lipton Challenge in August.

This is not the first time that sailors from the centrehave competed this level– the likes of Ashton Sampsonwas part of Team Shosholoza in the 2007 America’s Cupcampaign; Ryan Pentolfe and Roscoe Cupido won the2010 J22 Nationals; David Jacobs competed in the 2011RS Tera World Championship in Denmark; and 16-year-old JP Roberts qualified for the 2012 RS TeraWorld Championships which will take place in Italy inAugust.

The centrewas started in 1996by theWynbergRotaryClub with extensive and ongoing sponsorship fromMetropolitan Health. The mission of the centre is tocontribute to community development in the predomi-nantly low-income areas around Zeekoevlei.

Marco Tobin joined the Zeekoevlei Sailing Centre in1998 while still a learner at Grassy Park High. The sail-ing centre has grown significantly since then, withschool children from six local schools taking turns totrain every afternoon.

Says Tobin: “Since 2008 about 100 children have beentaught to sail every year. The children learn valuablelifeskills and leadership lessons and are also exposedto the option of sailing or boat-building and design asa career.”

A youngster who has benefited from the sailing cen-

tre is 20-year-old Morne Hardinge. He started sailingat the age of 13 and is now employed full time by thecentre. “Being a part of Zeekoevlei Sailing Centre haschanged my life,” says Hardinge. “It’s kept me out ofgangs and drugs and all the other problems so commonin the area where I grew up. Having been given thiswonderful opportunity, I find it very rewarding to giveback to the community.”

Tobin and the Lipton Cup team are following a stricttraining regimen and have their sights set at a finishin the top five.

Schools interested in joining the Zeekoevlei SailingCentre can call (021) 689 1954. Organisations interestedin helping with sponsorship for the Lipton Cup teamcan contact Tobin on 082 706 2444.

Relegation shatters SantosTASMIN CUPIDO

NO announcements of terminationsof contracts has been made at EngenSantos after they were relegatedfrom the Premier Soccer League(PSL) the weekend.

This according to team manager Yu-suf Gester, who stressed that the clubwill honour all contracts of players andstaffers.

The People’s Team find themselves inthe National First Division (NFD) aftera 4-3 loss to fellow Cape side ChippaUnited in the final relegation-promo-tion playoff match at Philippi Stadiumon Saturday. It is the first time Santoswill play in this league after enteringthe PSL in the 1996/1997 season.

Santos has had a tough season for theLansdowne-based side, after only win-ning seven from a total of 30 leaguematches – they lost 17 and drew six.Former coach Boebie Solomons was al-so sacked December.

Gester tells People’s Post that themood – in both the change rooms andthe office – after the loss was “tough”.“It was very quiet and we didn’t speakto them about the performance – every-one was obviously dejected,” he says.

“We respected the silence of the play-

ers and let it be. We really wanted towin; going into the match we knew whatwas at stake, In the end the match wasreally close.”

Rumours that coach Mart Nooij willleave the club has also been dispelled.“All players and staffers are contractedwith the club and we will honour thesecontracts,” Gester says.

“We however cannot determinewhether the players and coaching staffwill be approached by other clubs. It’sfootball, its the nature of the game.”

The squad and most office staffershave been given a break before they re-group for pre-season training and plans.

Meanwhile, Chippa United has beenwelcomed into the PSL by CEO StanMatthews.

“This is a great achievement by Chip-pa United following what has been animpressive run both in the NFD andsubsequently in the playoffs. They haveearned their place. I would like to takethis opportunity to congratulate theclub management, the coaching staff, the players and their fans for achievingthis remarkable feat,” Matthews says.

“Judging from the excitement andpassion that I saw from their fans inPhilippi today, there is no doubt in mymind that Chippa United will enjoygreat support from the football family.”
