TOWN CENTRE
Security beefupSAMANTHA LEE
@Samantha_Lee121
An increase in business robberies andburglaries at Town Centre could soonimpact on your shopping experience.
In thewake of these incidentsmany storesare threatening to pack up and leave thebusiness hub.
In the most recent incident Legit was bur-gled on the weekend of Saturday 21 and Sun-day 22 February.
Police was called out onMonday 23 Febru-ary.
According to a police report, it is unclearhowmany suspects were responsible for thebreak-in.
Mitchell’s Plain Police Station spokesper-son Sergeant Jerome Voegt confirms policeresponded to reports of a business burglary.
“A suspect or suspects gained access to thestore by breaking open the security shuttergates in front of the store. The suspectsmadeoff with clothing,” Voegt says.
The value and damages of the break-in areyet to be assessed.
Legit is a member of the Edcon group.Edcon spokesperson Vuyo Mtawa says
they will be doing regular monitoring at thebusiness hub moving forward.
The group owns two stores based at TownCentre.
“There is a Legit and a JetMart store [atTown Centre]. There have been a number ofrobberies at the stores in Town Centre,” heconfirms.
“In recent days and in relation to themostrecent robbery, there was no damage doneto the store infrastructure. As this is now apolice matter, we cannot disclose the itemsand value of the goods stolen.”
Police have confirmed that a case of bur-glary has been opened for investigation.
No arrests have been made.Last year – following an armed robbery –
the Sterns Jewellery store in the hub closedits doors.
Sterns, which is part of the FoschiniGroup, who could not be reached for com-
ment at the time of going to print.Mtawa says no decision has been made as
to whether they would close up shop at thehub or not.
“The safety and well-being of our custom-ers and employees remains paramount fortheEdcongroupandwecontinue to evaluatethe locations of all stores regularly,” he says.
Burglaries have been on the increasesince last year.
OnTuesday 23December thieves broke in-to the Sportscene store and took clothingand bags worth an estimated R98 000, policetold People’s Post at the time.
At this stage frustrations are brewing atthe “lack of security” at the hub.
Town Centre is owned in part by the Cityof Cape Town.
Johan van der Merwe, Mayoral Commit-tee Member for Energy, Environmental andSpatial Planning, says the City has deployedan additional 10 Law Enforcement officersvia the Mayoral Urban Regeneration Pro-gramme (MURP).
“[Law Enforcement officers] are responsi-ble for dealing with bylaw contraventionsand offences that they encounter in terms oftheir powers and mandate. Crime preven-tion is not part of their primary mandate;however, they also participate in integratedoperationswith the other enforcement agen-cies.
“Any concerns regarding criminal activi-ty should be referred to the police,” saysVander Merwe.
He acknowledges that there are problemswith the security at the hub and says: “Weare trying to facilitate safe, welcoming com-munity spaces. In order to do this, we haveto create environments that encourage com-munity activity and interaction. Naturally,if the community space is abandoned it willhave a negative impact on the economic andsocial well-being of Town Centre.”
To date the City has conducted an audit ofthe conditions and operational arrange-ments of buildings and infrastructure, an as-sessment of community safety and the iden-tification of crime hotspots within TownCentre.
The information gathered will feed intothe development of an overall precinct safe-ty plan for Town Centre which is targetedfor completion and implementation in mid-2015.
“These studies and the safety plan are thefirst elements of the Town Centre manage-ment regime. It was felt by the City that theimmediate prioritywas to address the issuesof community safety and hence the focus ofthe work identified above has been initiat-ed,” Van der Merwe says.
Local police say they too are beefing up onpatrols.
Last year, police management deployed amobile caravan to decrease robberies in thearea (“Mobile unit to combat crime”, Peo-ple’s Post, 14 October).
At the time, ward councillor Solomon Phi-lander said that since the introduction of themobile unit the hub has seen a decrease incrime.
“The community is pleased with the ser-vice and it makes them feel safer at the taxirank. Crimehas not reduced by 100%but thepolice presence does deter would-be crimi-nals from committing crime in the area,”Philander said.V Anyone with information on the burglary is urgedto phone the Mitchell’s Plain police on 021 370 1600or 021 370 1706.

You and the Budget
What does the Budget2015 mean to the ordinarySouth African citizen? Fi-nancial journalist Moesh-fieka Botha helps readersto understand how theywill be affected by theBudget.
There were many people who eagerlyawaited this year’s budget speech. And there were also many who sim-
ply were not interested in it because theyfeel that the decisions made by politiciansrarely havemuch impact on the lives of or-dinary citizens.
They still just do the best they can withwhat they have available. Budget 2015,however, is very important to ordinarySouth African citizens because it does di-rectly affect our lives. Finance MinisterNhlanhla Nene’s first full National Budgetwas a tough one.
Fuel levyThe biggest shock to consumers was
probably the raising of the fuelprices by 80.5c/F. This is madeup of an increase in the generalfuel levy by 30.5c/F and theRoadAccident Fund levy by 50c/F.
While fuel prices are now attheir lowest in many months, consumers might be able to ab-sorb these increased levies, butfuel prices do fluctuate.
Consumers will be feeling thefull brunt of this levy hike whenthe fuel price rises again. Wewill not only be feeling it direct-ly when we fill up, but we aresure to the see the price of basicfood and necessities rise too.
ElectricityThe other hike which will
have a direct effect on consum-ers is the “temporary” increasein the electricity levy form 3.5c/kWh to 5.5c/kWh. According toNene this was put into place toassist demand. The additional2c/kWh will be withdrawnwhen the electricity shortage isover.
Income taxPeople earning more than
R181 900 a year (R15 158 amonth)with have their personalincome tax increased by 1%.This raises tax of the averageperson in this tax bracket, belowthe age of 65 by about R21 amonth.
The rates and brackets fortransfer duties on the sale ofproperties will be adjusted, sothat it provides relief to middleincome households. Transferduty on properties belowR750 000 will be eliminated.
Sin taxOther increases include:. The tax on a quart of beer
goes up by 15.5c;. A bottle of wine will cost 15c
more;. A bottle of sparkling wine
goes up by 48c and a bottle ofwhisky will cost R3.77 more;. A pack of 20 cigarettes will
cost 82c more.Social grants have been in-
creased:. Old age, war veterans,
disability and care depend-ency grants will increase byR60 from R1350 to R1410;. Child support grants will
increase by R10 to R330;. And foster care grants will
increase by R30 to R860.The number of beneficia-
ries of social grants has dou-bled from 7.7 million recipi-ents. Nene said they would re-view the possibility of furtheradjustments to grant values inOctober.
Disposable incomeThe household debt-to-dis-
posable income ratio current-ly stands at 78.4%.
Consumerswho are alreadycash strapped and specificallystruggling to pay their debt, are encouraged to tightentheir belts and put all their re-sources into becoming debt-free as soon as possible.
Roger Brown, chief execu-tive of debt counsellors CreditMatters, says: “This is crunchtime for consumers. The onlyway those struggling withdebt are going to survive is bydecreasing what they paytheir creditors monthly sothat theymayhavemoremon-ey left to live on and pay forbasic necessities.”V How are you tightening your belt?Share your thoughts on cash-savinginitiatives you have introduced or
plan to implement in your home.Starting with the word “Post” SMSto 32516. SMSes cost R1.
Citizens willhave to revisittheir personalbudgets toaccommodatefor expectedincreases in fueland sin tax. This photo is anillustration.PHOTO: MONIQUEDUVAL

Final moments before Zephany was snatched from her biological parents.
KIDNAP DRAMA
Girl foundafter 17 yearsShe was snatched from her mother’s
arms at just three days old. That was17 years ago.
Now two families are having to come toterms with the legal and emotional roller-coaster that was unleashed after the miss-ing girl, named Zephany at birth, was foundin one of the most unlikely – yet touching– turn of events.Zephany was kidnapped from Groote
Schuur Hospital in April 1997.It was reported that her birth parents Ce-
leste and Morné Nurse, of Retreat, came tofind her when other pupils at a Cape Townschool remarked how closely Zephany re-sembled a Grade 8 pupil. They reportedly invited Zephany over
saying they want to meet their daughter’sfriend and realised the girl could be theirmissing daughter.DNA tests confirmed Zephany was the
three-day-old infant who disappeared al-most two decades ago.She was snatched from her sleeping
mother’s arms in hospital, but the Nursefamily would not give up hope of findingher. The Nurses have reportedly celebrated
their missing daughter’s birthday everyyear on 28 April, together with their threeother children. They celebrated her birthday with a do-
nated cake in hopes that their daughter and
would return home safely some day.Provincial police spokesperson Lieuten-
ant-Colonel Andrè Traut says the Hawksconducted an “intensive investigation”which resulted in the arrest of a 50-year-oldwoman.“The woman was arrested on Thursday
morning following the investigation sur-rounding a crime that was perpetrated on30 April 1997 where a baby girl was kid-napped from Groote Schuur Hospital.“The suspect faces charges of kidnapping,
fraud and contravening sections 32 (4) (a)and (b) of the Children’s Act [Act 38 of 2005]– in that she fraudulently pretended thatshe was the biological mother of a child,”Traut says. The suspect has appeared in the Cape
Town Magistrate’s Court on Friday 27 Feb-ruary.Traut says the teenager has since been
placed in the care of the social services de-partment. “Due to the sensitive nature ofthe case, finer aspects surrounding themat-ter cannot be disclosed at this stage,” headds. She reportedly grew up with a different
name, and a different family, never know-ing she was not their real daughter.Reports on Netwerk24 says the Retreat
couple who raised Zephany only registeredher at the Department of Home Affairs sixyears after her birth.

An international independent private highschool for boys recently opened its newschool premises inBridgetown. The Star Col-lege Cape Town opened its doors and startedthe new school year on Wednesday 21 Janu-ary, giving its pupils a great start to theirschooling career. The school currently accommodates about
150 pupils from Grade 8 to 12, from areas in-cluding Athlone, Lansdowne, Mitchell’sPlain and Claremont.According to Ahmet Kayya, deputy princi-
pal of the school, the new premises boasts athree-storey building with 14 classrooms, ad-ministration offices, boarding facilities forthe pupils, a cafeteria, hall and labs.“We have similar buildings in the other
provinces, and decided to use the same de-sign for this building. The land which thenew school is built on was donated to thetrust,” says Kayya. He says a number of factors differentiate
the Star College Cape Town from otherschools. This include the small classes with amaxi-
mum of 26 pupils, the staff do regular homevisits, they focus on mathematics and sci-ence, teachers give individual attention, the
school boasts a 100% matric pass rate everyyear, and they have qualified Turkish andSouth African teachers.“We promise our pupils a safe and secure
learning environment,” says Kayya. The school also offers exchange opportuni-
ties for its pupils to Turkey. The new school is one of Star Internation-
al’s five campuses across Cape Town, andthere are a few other Star Internationalschools in Durban, Pretoria and Johannes-burg. “In terms of an educational facility, weare fully operational. We are doing all the fin-ishing touches on the premises. However, our sport facilities will be completed at a lat-er stage,” says Kayya. He says the official launch will take place
later this year.According to the website starcol-
legecpt.co.za, the Star College Cape Town ispart of the Horizon Educational Trust whichwas founded in 1998. It states the trust hasplayed a significant and extensive role in fos-tering a good relationship between South Af-rica and Turkey in the educational, culturaland social fields.. The Star College Cape Town will hold an
open day for high school boys at the newBridgetown campus on Saturday 7 Marchfrom 10:00 to 14:00. The school is situated at126 Tarentaal Road, Athlone.

An initiative started by a handful of pu-pils under the watchful eye of an En-glish teacher has been concluded with
the official launch of a new school library. The handover – arranged by the school
staff – took place on Friday 27 February. The event started with a mass assembly
where guest speakers, officials and formerpupils were given the opportunity to sharetheir thoughts and words of wisdom.
Teacher Caroline Christians says the bookdrive was a huge success.
“We have forgotten how important read-ing is. We had a library before but in orderto make room for technological develop-ments all the books were packed away inboxes,” she said to the assembly.
The launch included a poem about read-ing, motivational speeches, the singing ofthe national anthem and a display put on by
the school’s marching band. The library was established to improve
and promote reading as part of educationaldevelopment.
The pupils were involved in the initiativeand made contributions of second-handbooks to the library.
The area has books for leisure and educa-tional reading with sections for fiction, thriller, novel, textbook, law and generalgenres.
Christians urged more pupils to get in-volved by donating books to the initiative.V If you would like to donate any second-hand booksto the school call the school secretary on 021 374 4142or drop them off at the school offices.
Circuit Team Manager Derick Pieterse and Deputy Head Boy Brandon Adams declare thelibrary officially open. PHOTOS: SAMANTHA LEE
Library monitors Kenoleen Fortuin, AllizaneKapp, Victoria Janett, Kaylene Scott and JodiSwart will ensure the area is kept intact.
Head GirlSoligah Solo-mons and HeadBoy Rezon Lotterwere among thefirst pupils to gothrough thebooks after thelaunch. Thebooks wereprimarilydonated to thelibrary by pupils, parents, teach-ers, otherschools andformer pupils.

‘Corrupt’ copsSAMANTHA LEE

Two constables attached to the Mitch-ell’s Plain Police Station have been ar-rested in connection with corruption
charges.According to a source close to the investi-
gation, Lentegeur police received a tip-off oftwo officers believed to have accepted abribe from suspects during an arrest. The source confirms that the tip-off was
attended to by Cluster commander Major-General Abraham Goss and a warrant offi-cer attached to the Lentegeur Police Sta-tion. This was confirmed by the provincialpolice in a statement released on their Face-book page.Lentegeur police spokesperson Sergeant
Cathy Meyer explains that about 14:00 onFriday 27 February an officer received in-formation that a large amount of drugswerefound at a house in Bitou Street, Eastridge.“The two officers in question arrested a
man at the house and put him in the backof the police vehicle. It is alleged that theofficers then asked the suspect what he iswilling to pay them in return for his re-lease,” she says. She says the officers then drove around
with the suspect.
This was allegedly to allow him to phonehis family for money. The family confirmed that a R1000 was
ready for collection and the two officerswere paid. They, in turn, released the man.The officers dropped him at his home and

We are also urging thecommunity to come forward and report cor-ruption. Residents must put it to paper andnot bring it up in public meetings. Plans for youth camp siteMONIQUE DUVAL
@monique_duval
A proposal to regularise the use of a siteat Bluewaters Resort for a youth campsite has been put on hold.
The application was heard at the monthlySouth Peninsula Subcouncil meeting whichincludes Ward 43.
According to the report, the proposal is toallow not-for-profit company South AfricanYouth Adventures (Saya) to continue to usean area known as Site C of the resort foryouth development courses and camps.
The reports states the activities conductedby Saya on the site are in line with the Cityof Cape Town’s approach to provide positivedevelopment for youth at risk.
“Saya is removing them from hazardoustownship situations of drugs and crime, toa create well-prepared person who will beable to make a positive impact in their com-
munities,” it reads. The report recommends the site be leased
for free for a period of three years.Commenting on the report ward council-
lor Elton Jansen said while he supported theproposal in principle he would like to knowmore about what the organisation did.
“Any organisation which works with theyouth is welcomed in my ward but it wouldbe nice if the councillor or a delegation couldgo on a visit,” he said.
Councillors agreed to note the item. Ac-cording to their website, Saya has variousprojects for youth in Mitchell’s Plain.
They prioritise youth in disadvantagedcommunities and bring development, sportand play back into communities. Subcouncilchairperson Felicity Purchase says theagreement has been deferred until the nextmeeting in March.V What are your thoughts? Starting with the word“Post”, SMS your thoughts to 32516. Carbo Stop Fat-Stopstops your body from absorbing carbohydrates from the food that you eat and stops
your body from absorbing fat from the food that you eat. These two products can be used in two ways:
Research has shown that if these two products are taken with
the Turbo Trim weight Loss Program, they will almost double the rate at which you lose weight because
even if you are sticking to a healthy way of eating, there are still a certain amount of fat and carbohydrate
in the food that you eat, so taking the Fat-Stop and Carbo-Stop will ensure that you absorb even less from
your food and lose even faster. We all know that even with the best
intentions, most people are likely to have periods when they go overboard and eat food that is too high in
fats or carbohydrates. All you do is take a few extra Fat-Stop and/or Carbo-Stop before eating pizza,
chocolates or going to a party and you can get away with 'cheating' and not pick up weight. These two
products are your 'insurance program' to ensure that you never pick up weight ever again!!

A new political party established in Ma-nenberg last week will “reflect thedemographics of the country”.
This sentiment was shared by the leader-ship of the new Social Democratic Party(SDP), launched on 24 February.
SDP president Ricardo Sedres says theplight of the people of Manenberg, Mitchell’sPlain and Hanover Park will finally be takento heart.
Sedres and other party members at the
launch vowed they will focus on areas of so-cial and community development, crimeprevention and economic empowerment.
“The ANC and DA are historically exclu-sive political homes of blacks and whites re-spectively, leaving almost no room for col-oured people to express themselves.
“Our members are all community activ-ists, who have given years of their lives, ex-pertise and passion to bring about change,”says Sedres.
He says the current political climate inSouth Africa warrants the establishment ofa new political party that “really reflects the
national demographic of this country”.“Over the past 30 years we have noticed
that many have lost faith in the mainstreampolitical parties to represent them and theiraspirations. We (the SDP) have the colouredcommunities’ interest at heart.Ournationalexecutive are men and women who havepaid their dues in sweat, blood and tears. Wehave legitimate leaders who are passionateandcommitted to lasting change reliant onlyon values of cooperation, community con-sultation and transparency,” says Sedres.
He says theparty invites all to join theSDPin taking back their streets, courts and com-
munities.Gigi Richards, a community worker from
Hanover Park, says she is aware of the newpolitical party, but was unable to attend thelaunch. She says she fully trusts thenewpar-ty and its president to make a difference inthe communities. “He (Sedres) is a people’sperson and he definitely has the people’s in-terests at heart. We, the people of HanoverPark, will try and help him to make a differ-ence in our community,” says Richards.
Jody Lees, who works with youth, saysstarting a new political party is a bold move.“I think a new party can bring about changein these communities. With the right poli-cies and philosophies, and making God thecentre of the party, then only will the partystart tomake inroads towardsabetter futurefor all in Cape Town,” says Lees.
Sedres says the SDP will contest local mu-nicipal elections from 2016, mostly in theCape Town municipal areas.

Being a woman is both difficult and ex-pensive.
And because of this, the Business-women’s Association (BWA) of South Africahas put together packs of reusable sanitarytowels.
Aloe High was the first school to benefitfrom the initiativewhere hundreds of reusa-ble pads were distributed.
Published author and businesswomanVangile Makwakwa was one of the keynotespeakers and has been involved with theproject since January.
“Being a woman is expensive and this[menstruation] is something I didn’t ask for.No one would ask for a period. I sat and didsome introspectionand thought: ‘Pads are soexpensive.Wouldwe pay somuch if men gotperiods too?’ So I am very passionate aboutthis,” she says.
Makwakwa first heard of the association’sinitiative to distribute reusable pads fromBWA Corporate Social Investment projectmanager Bongiwe Mkhize last year.
“This is great because pads are so expen-sive and being a woman with a budget Iknow. I wondered how does a 15-year-old af-ford to buy pads – especially in a disadvan-taged area,” she says.
Makwakwa says she pledged to donate10% of her profits but was encouraged tocome on board to help the organisationthrough motivating the young girls.
“This is a difficult age and an emotionaltime. Being inmy 20s I am still trying to dealwith men and life and emotions. It is timefor us to step in andhelp themout,” she says.
In her address to the group of girls, sheurged them to be themselves and embrace
their womanhood.A pupil named Anandi thanked Makwak-
wa for sharing her inspiring story.“Thank you for encouraging us to be
young girls and to inspire other young girls.I also want to thank you for motivating usto live our dreams and follow our callings,”she says.
Mkhize says the initiative is all about sup-porting each other and inspiring pupils tolive to their full potential.
Last year the organisation donated 150pads to Koeberg Primary School (“Sanitarysolution for primary school students”, Peo-ple’s Post, 29 May).
At the time, Mkhize explained that thepads were more sustainable and cost effec-tive for those who were less fortunate.
“On the outside of the pad a hydrophobicfabric is used to keep you dry, and inside ahydrophilic fabric for absorption is used. There are no gels, chemicals or cotton woolsused so as to mitigate infection,” she saidlast year.
The handover took place at a special as-sembly with all the girls from Grade 8 to 11at the school on Thursday 26 February.
This was the BWA’s second visit to theschool.
On their first visit, all the girls were sizedand packs were specifically designed forthem.
Each girl received nine washable and re-usable pads, a carry case, specialised under-wear, instructions on their use and a mes-sage of support from the organisation.
They were also taught how to look afterthem in order to ensure they last for the fulllifespan.
Using the washable sanitary pads meansthe pupils will not need to buy any femininehygiene products for the next five years.

The nine washable pads were sealed in a bag with a pair of specialised underwear. Eachfemale pupil received a pack suited to their size.

Vandalism to community facilities, while at-tempting tomake a point, only leaves local res-idents worse off.
The OR Tambo Community Hall in Khayelitshawas set alight at theweekend, after several childrensuffered food poisoning after an event at the facility. In a meeting following the incident, residents in-
volved in protest action over a housing develop-ment also sought clarity on their concerns. In the early hours of Sunday morning, the hall
was torched. This is just one incident of a communi-ty facility being vandalised. Each week, parks, sporting facilities, community
halls and public toilets are vandalised and damagedacross the city. While this might gain the perpetrator a quick
buck or make a political point, local residents arethe ones ultimately paying the price. In many suburbs, gang violence is a daily occur-
rence and children have few safe diversions.Community facilities provide a safe space for the
youth to study, learnnewskills or takepart in extra-curricular activities.Denying them such opportunities will see more
children turning to crime or failing at school. These facilities are often the only place to meet,
compete in sport or relax with family and friends. When they are damaged, not only is the communi-
ty deprived of these activities, but the funds usedto repair those facilities are essentially wasted. If not put towards repairing damaged and vandal-
ised halls and parks, those funds could be chan-nelled toward improving infrastructure, buildinghouses and developing more community facilities.Isn’t it timeweall start treating community facili-
ties like the treasures they are?
EDITORIAL COMMENT
Caution
Every drop mattersIt is difficult to imagine anything morevulnerable than a baby born premature-ly.Sometimes [they are] so tiny that they
can lie inside the palm of your handoutstretched.Where nature would have it cradled
against the warmth of a mother’s breast, this child must seek comfort, nourish-ment and company from tubes andmonitors. As it draws its first breath it isalready in the midst of the fiercest battlefor its existence it is likely to ever know. When it comes to nutrition for babies,
quite simply nothing compares to breast-milk. The scientific evidence underpin-ning this fact is undisputed, and unfortu-nately we have not been able replicatethis wonder food in our laboratories. While formula milk is at best an ade-quate replacement for healthy babiesborn at full term, the range of complica-tions and development challenges facedby premature babies renders “laborato-ry” nutrition ineffective at increasing
their survival rate and future healthpotential. To complicate matters further, many of these vulnerable infants in theWestern Cape do not have access tobreastmilk from their mothers. It is at this point that Milk Matters
steps in to make a lifesaving interven-tion. As a community-based Milk Banksituated in the heart of Cape Town, MilkMatters sources breastmilk from healthyand screened donors, ensuring that theseinfants have less risk of disease, inparticular sepsis and necrotising entero-colitis, ultimately enabling the babies toreturn home sooner.Human Milk Banking Week which
takes place the first week of Marchaffords Milk Matters the opportunity toexpress our gratitude to the hundreds ofvolunteers and community members whoensure that these vulnerable infants haveaccess to breastmilk every single day ofthe year – from the freezers of donor-mother homes to the 18 depots aroundthe province to their final destination at
Mowbray Maternity Hospital. What isclear is that Milk Matters depends on anentire community structure to do itswork: the grandparents, aunts, unclesand in-laws who transport our preciouscommodity from as far afield as Worces-ter and Langebaan.Of course, none of what we do is
possible without the mothers who spenda lot of extra time expressing theirbreastmilk, an activity never eagerlyanticipated or fondly regarded. Whetherit is a one-off donation or donating forover a year every drop of milk counts tothe most vulnerable of our population. It is sometimes impossible to quantify
the true benefit of support given toorganisations that assist the country’smost vulnerable and needy. However, forMilk Matters support translates into avery measurable benefit: every drop ofextra breastmilk we can supply canliterary make all the difference. If you have any breastmilk to donate
or would like to contribute in otherways, please contact Milk Matters [email protected] or 021 659 5599.

Death of two cyclists: time to enforce the lawThe Pedal Power Association (PPA) issaddened by the death of yet anothercyclist. Roy Neil Smith, aged 70, recentlydied while cycling along Victoria Road inCamps Bay.In 2013, the provincial government
passed a law stating that drivers mustpass cyclists with a minimum of 1m andit is time that drivers adhere to the lawor be prosecuted.Drastic action needs to be taken by the
provincial government to enforce this lawto keep cyclists alive. The fatal accident appears to have been
caused by a bus forcing the cyclist intothe pavement where he fell and wassubsequently crushed by a constructiontruck.Several PPA members have reported
via social media channels of beingnarrowly missed by buses on this partic-ular stretch of road where road worksare currently taking place.“There is no road shoulder, yet the bus
drivers seem to just plough through atfull speed without even the slightestdeviation to give cyclists some room,”one comment reads. The time has come for bus services –
and indeed all companies that use largevehicles – to educate their drivers aboutthe vulnerability of cyclists, pointing outthat they are breaking the law in theWestern Cape by not passing at (at least)1m.In memory of the deceased and in
protest of the unnecessary deaths ofcyclists on our roads, the PPA will beplacing a ‘ghost bike’ at the spot wherethe fatal accident occurred during thePPA Safe Cycling ‘Stay Wider of theRider’ Awareness Ride on Saturday 28February.The PPA just heard of another fatal
accident on the notorious Clovelly/KalkBay Main Road where it seems a com-muter on his way to work was fatallyinjured.
The new law in the Western Cape isquite clear that a driver of a motorvehicle, who passes a cyclist on a publicroad, must exercise due care whilepassing the cyclist; leave a distancebetween the motor vehicle and the cyclistof at least 1m; and maintain that distancefrom the cyclist until safely clear of thecyclist.Statistics show that almost all cycling
fatalities on our roads are caused bycyclists being hit by a motor vehicle frombehind or when a vehicle underestimatesthe speed of a cyclist and turns in frontof the cyclist.Cyclists have almost no protection
when they are involved in an accident, soby giving them adequate space on theroads, motorists can avoid accidents thatcan cost precious lives. The road is foreveryone’s use, so let’s show toleranceand respect for one another.

A local singer is hoping to inspire otherswith her story when she takes to the stageat the JosephStoneAuditoriumonSaturday7 March.Athlone’s Natalie Johannes will present
her show Dear younger me with Nur Felix,Melissa Johanissen and MC Tracey Lange, togetherwithdramatic pieces byProject 021.“I’ve wanted to tell my story for a long
time, but I didn’t have the courage,” Nataliesays.Last year, Natalie and the band 5 Levels
Up raised R78 000 for Baphumelele, an or-phanage in Khayelitsha, with a show at StGeorge’s Cathedral. When her manager asked her about put-
ting on a show this year she decided: “Itneeds to have purpose, vision and a theme.”The purpose this time around is “to show
people that no matter how you grow up,there’s always a choice to make somethingof your life, despite your circumstances. Youstill have a purpose in life”.The first half of Dear younger mewill con-
sist of skits by Project 021, a communityyouth theatre group.“There are a few things that happen in the
skits that happened tomeas a child andhaveaffected me as an adult,” Natalie explains, pointing out that these issues, like bullyingand low self-esteem, are problems thatmanypeople have experienced at some point oftheir lives. The evening will also include poetry that
speaks to the skits, and of course singing anddancing.Besides the on-stage entertainment, the
audience can also look forward to a rafflewith prizes worth R14 000 up for grabs. Some of these include a stay at the Mount
Nelson Hotel, a gift voucher for Kitima inHout Bay, a VIP day in the presidential suiteat Newlands Cricket Grounds, spa treat-ments, a magnum of Cap Classique and adinner for two at Buitenverwachting.V Tickets for Dear younger me at Joseph Stone Audito-rium at 20:00 on Saturday 7 March cost between R80and R120 and are available at www.webtickets.co.za.

Bidding legend ofstage a fond farewellThe musical world is in mourning after thepassing of another legend of the local scene,Zayn Adam.In the early hours of Monday 23 February
the news spread quickly on various socialmedia that the 68-year-old entertainer haddied in Groote Schuur Hospital and the out-pourings of love from his generations of mu-sic lovers has not stopped. While his career in entertainment started
when he was a youngster performing withthe minstrels and various variety concertsin District 6 and surrounds, it was as amem-ber of the group Pacific Express that he real-ly made his mark most notably for the hitGive a little love.In recent times he was diagnosed with a
heart condition but never gave up on his lo-ve for music, still taking to the stage to giveaudiences a taste of his magical crooningstyle. He has been part of recent Pacific Express
reunion projects, one of which was going totake place at the Jazz on the Rocks festival
near Paternoster, and at the Cape Town In-ternational Jazz Festival.Last year he was also feted when he cele-
brated 50 years in the entertainment busi-ness with a concert at GrandWest Arena. At the People’s Post Hot Summer Groove
concert he alsomade a guest appearance andcould still bring crowds to their feet whenhe took to the stage. On Facebook, music lovers from across
the world have not stopped celebrating hislegacy since news of his passing spread.Bassist Jonathan Roubain remembers
himwith fondness especially since oneof hislast appearanceswas at theirLove duets con-cert at the Baxter.“Whenever we would see each other, he
would greet me with a big fat kiss on mycheeks. We would hug and hold each otherfor a while. We are blessed that his last per-formance were at our show. My heart is inpieces. I’m going to miss you, uncle ZaynAdam,” he said.V For video go to www.tygerburger.co.za.

The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon hasbeen awarded the coveted Silver Labelstatus by the International Association
of Athletics Federations (IAAF) – the firstmarathon on the continent to be awardedthis classification.
According to Wikipedia, Silver Label sta-tus means that at least five nations are to berepresented by runners with times fasterthan the IAAF’s guidelines. Additionally, the race course must be closed to vehiculartraffic, and measured to the Association ofInternational Marathons and Distance Ra-ces (AIMS) standard, with full electronictiming used to generate the results. The racemust be organised in a way that minimizesecological damage to the surrounding areas.A specified number of doping tests must becarried out, and prize-money for the partici-pants should be equal, irrespective of genderor nationality, though additional rewardscanbegiven to runners fromthehostnation.
This year the marathon will be held overthe weekend of 19 and 20 September. Entrieswill open on 1 March and organisers expect20 000 entries.
The marathon has R1.6 million in totalprize money.
“The bar has certainly been raised quitehigh and as we launch this year’s event, theorganisers have set yet another challenge –the IAAF’s Gold Label status for the SanlamCape TownMarathon. We are confident thatthis will also be achieved in no time,” saidCarl Roothman, Chief Executive: Retail:Sanlam Investments speaking at a mediabriefing.
A significant milestone has already beenreached towards the achievement of theGold Label status. The Sanlam Cape TownMarathon is one of the first sporting eventsin South Africa to be declared carbon neu-tral.
Additionally, Africa’s largest vitamins
and nutritional supplements brand, VitalHealth Foods, has been appointed develop-mental partner for the Sanlam Cape TownMarathon to help assist with the develop-ment of the sport in South Africa. Technicalpartner Asics, alongwith Sanlam, will spon-sor a trip for two people to take part in the2016 Paris Marathon, as a prized reward fora lucky entrant wanting to experience whatthe essence of a world-class Gold Label sta-tus marathon is.
“The Silver Label status puts the SanlamCape Town Marathon on the race calendarfor the top tier international runners in 2015.Weare excited to be planning a spectator ori-entated event over the Heritage Day week-end,” said Elana Meyer, marathon brandambassador.
Last year’s event in September drew over12 500 athletes, 5 000 more runners than theprevious year. It was won by Kenyan WillyKibor Koitile in a time of 2:10:45.
