Dear Friends,

As we move into December and approach the holidays, the Spir-

it of Giving increases. Families and 4-H Clubs look to do a little

more for others in their community. We find ways to make life

better for others. When you help others it isn’t always what you

did or what you gave, but the fact that you share your time

and yourself to help someone else. Wouldn’t it be nice to carry

on this spirit throughout the year? Perhaps the following words

better describe our giving to others.

The Art of Giving

We give of ourselves when we give gifts of the heart: love,

kindness, joy understanding, sympathy, tolerance, for-

giveness.

We give of ourselves when we give gifts of the mind: ideas,

dreams, purpose, ideals, principals, plans, inventions, pro-

jects, poetry.

We give ourselves when we give gifts of the spirit: prayer, vi-

sion, beauty, aspirations, peace, faith.

We give ourselves when we give the gifts of words: encour-

agement, inspiration, guidance.

Emerson said it well: “ Rings and jewels are not gifts, but

apologies for gifts. The only true gift is a portion of thyself.”

4-H Parent / Leader Federation

Pepin County 4-H Conducts Award Trip Interviews

In order to be selected as a representative on select 4-H award trips, high school aged Pepin

County 4-H members need to go through steps similar to applying for a job. These workforce

readiness skills include developing a cover letter and personal resume, obtaining two non-related

adult recommendations and participating in an interview conducted by Pepin County 4-H

Parent/Leader Federation members.

4-H award trip interviews not only provide a means to determine scholarship distribution to the

applicants but as a lifelong learning skill. Interviews provide an avenue for youth to receive

constructive feedback in a low-stress environment. The exercises can help the

participants boost their confidence as well as reduce anxiety about future interviewing

situations. Students establish their skills of interviewing preparation, answering questions

about themselves in a timely matter, acceptable body language, as well as developing insightful re-

sponses to interview questions. interviews are not only a great way to calm their nerves, but they

can also give them guidance, which can help these members through their next job interview.

The 4-H Pepin County Parent/Leader Federation had nine applicants that were selected as award

trip recipients. Most of the recipients were presented with scholarships, ranging from $125 -

$400, to help defray the cost of these 4-H educational and leadership trips.

Wisconsin Pork Association Scholarships – Deadline December 1st

The Wisconsin Pork Association is offering scholarships to high school

seniors and college students. Students with a sincere interest in the swine industry are encouraged to apply.

Wisconsin Pork Association Scholarship

The Wisconsin Pork Association scholarship is open to high school seniors pursuing post high school education in agriculture. Preference

will be given to those students possessing leadership abilities and a sincere interest in the swine industry. Five finalists will be selected from the applications received to compete for the $500 scholarship,

with each finalist receiving $250 for their participation. An interviewing committee will select finalists. The application for this

scholarship is posted on www.wppa.org.

Whitmore Memorial Scholarship

The Whitmore Memorial Scholarship was established as a legacy to the late Rex Whitmore, a master statesman and communicator who served as the first executive director of the Wisconsin Pork Producers

Association.

Applicants must be a registered junior or senior at one of the following University of Wisconsin campuses: Madison, Platteville, or River Falls. This is a $500 scholarship, and priority will be given to applicants

pursuing an Animal Science or closely related major, with each finalist receiving $250 for their participation.

The criteria considerations include grade point average (applicant should be in top one-third of class), extracurricular activities involvement and leadership positions, career interest and orientation, and financial

need.

Gunderson Memorial Scholarship

The Wisconsin Pork Association, in cooperation with the family of Buell Gunderson, has established a scholarship program to recognize the many contributions that Gunderson made to the Wisconsin pork

industry. Gunderson, together with his wife, Bernice, served as Secretary/Treasurer of the Wisconsin Pork Association for 20 plus years and assisted in growing the organization from its initial roots to the successful organization that it is today–sponsoring scholarships, developing youth programs and helping to support the

pork producers of the state.

The Wisconsin Pork Association will accept recommendations or applications from county pork producer organizations, industry members, pork producers, and colleges or technical schools for recipients of the

Gunderson Memorial Scholarship on an annual basis. Individuals who have shown considerable dedication and involvement in the pork industry will be considered for the $500 scholarship.

Application Deadlines are December 1, 2016. Applications can also be downloaded at www.wppa.org.

LIMA LADS AND LASSIES

The Lima Lads and Lassies 4-H Club held their November meeting on the 20th at the Durand City Hall. Menting's were the Family In Charge. Jeff, Michelle, and Elizabeth had the supplies all laid out for our meeting project so we started with that. Everyone got to chose to make either a santa or snowman Christmas tree ornament. This turned out to be a very simple, quick, and extremely cute project.

Next we moved on to club business. We welcomed a new family that joined our club. They are Carrie and Joel Brunner with their daughters Aubrey and Maura. 4-H will be entering an exhibit in the Dazzle Day parade on Saturday Nov. 26 so we discussed how we will decorate our float. We will be meeting at Dale and Debbie Bauer's home on Friday the 25th to assemble and decorate our float. It's that time of the year again to ring the bells for the Salvation Army so everyone was instructed how to sign up for a 2 hour time slot online or by calling Donna Juleff. Our club will having our annual bake sale at the HOHOHO Expo on Sunday Dec. 4 from 9:00 am - 2:00 pm. Each family selected which kind of cookie they wanted to make. Any family that wants to help tray up cookies, we will be doing that on Friday Dec. 2 at 1:00 at Wendy's house. Along with selling cookies at our bake sale, Lauren will be selling pillow cases and fleece tie blanket that she made herself to raise funds for a trip she is taking to the inauguration of President Trump. Stephanie and Wendy have been busy making Christmas crafts such as pallet trees, snowman ornaments, decorated windows and decorated picture frames to sell to raise funds for her

summer service learning trip to possibly Anchorage, Alaska. Fair project discs were handed put that were earned by completing a 4-H record book. Our final projects for the meeting were making price tags for our cookie trays and putting together our murals for our float for the Dazzle Parade. The next time the Lima Lads and Lassies will meet will be Sunday Dec. 18 for our Christmas Party.

Thank you to everyone who donated candy for the 4-H Halloween Candy Drive for the

Military. We collected and sent about 280 pounds of candy. The SYC sponsored the Halloween Candy Drive at the Pepin Elementary, Durand Jr/Sr High School, Assumption School, and also a

drop off point at the UW-Extension office for the public. The successful candy drive was a fun and creative way to show support of our military troops. In addition to the candy some students

created cards and drawings to thank the soldiers for their service. The candy and cards raised during the drive will be donated to our military troops through Pepin County 4-H Teen Leaders

and Operation Gratitude.

Wisconsin 4-H members have the opportunity this winter to pilot a 4-H Astronomy project book.

This project book offers 4-H members access to robotic, research telescopes that are located around

the world! Members will learn how to conduct their own observations with these telescopes while

exploring inquiry-based STEM activities on a variety of astronomy topics. There are additional

opportunities for youth to engage in communication with scientists and assist astronomers with

their projects. Please read the following notes below about participating in this pilot:

This pilot is open to any 4-H member between 8 to 17 years old.

No previous experience is necessary.

Internet access is required to complete this project.

No specialized equipment is needed other than access to a computer with internet. Members and

adult helpers do not need a telescope or physical access to an observatory to participate.

4-H members who agree to participate in this pilot must complete the project by March 31, 2017.

This project requires participation over time to be successful. It cannot be completed in the

course of a week. It is recommended that a 4-H member devotes at least one hour a week over the

course of at least 8 weeks to fully engage in this pilot opportunity.

4-H members and their adult helpers will be asked to provide feedback on the pilot materials as

well as participate in focus group discussions during the spring of 2017.

As 4-H members pilot the project, we want them to be honest with any difficulties they have in

navigating the curriculum or technology and we do not want to intervene in the process. However if

a 4-H member finds that they cannot progress forward with the project without intervention, we can

step in at that point to get them back on track.

4-H members who wish to participate must sign up by December 27, 2016

with the Pepin County Extension Office at 715-672-5214.
