The S.A.W. lasted 4 months.Admiral Dewey attacked and destroyed the

Spanish Navy in the Philippines.The Spanish quickly surrendered.The biggest battle of the war took place in

Cuba.Theodore Roosevelt, organized a group of

soldiers called the “Rough Riders”The Rough Riders charged and captured San

Juan Hill in Cuba (sank all the Spanish ships)

Spain & the United States agreed to stop fighting on Aug. 12th, 1898.

On December 10th, 1898 Spain & the United States signed a treaty that ended the war.

Spain agreed to give Cuba its independence.US gained control of Puerto Rico, Guam &

Philippines.Senators disagreedPhilippines didn’t want the US to control them. (3yr

war)The beginning of America becoming a powerful

nation

What Happened to Cuba after the war?To help the government keep order, the

United States forces remained in Cuba for 4 years.

Cuba set up a new educational system, highways and sanitation system.

Yellow fever was cured by Dr. Reed (American)

America was allowed to keep a military base there.
