MASTER TISSUE PROGRAMME By: Fazlin Zaini & AP Dr San San Thwin The Department of Anatomy and Laboratory Unit, UniKL RCMP with the cooperation of the Marketing and Corporate Communication Department conducted the Master Tissue Programme from 11th to 14th and 20th to 21st of April 2011.This programme was conducted for 40 students and two biology teachers from Sekolah Menengah Sains Raja Tun Azlan Shah (SERATAS), Taiping, Perak. We had a short, preliminary meeting on 10th of April 2011 with the Principal, two biology teachers and an Alumni student of SERATAS, to confirm our tentative time table for the short programme. The meeting took place at the Histology Lab, Anatomy department, UniIKL RCMP.
11th April 2011 The students and teachers of SERATAS arrived at UniKL RCMP at about 3pm. Before the session started, we had a photographic session with the lecturers and staff, the students and teachers from SERATAS. Then the students attended lectures on the human respiratory system given by Associate Professor Dr San San Thwin and human gastrointestinal system given by Puan Fazlin Zaini at the Histology Lab, in the Anatomy department. Demonstrations on the gross specimens on the same topics were conducted in the dissection hall. They were really excited because it was their first experience touching the real specimens! The class finished at about 5.30pm.
25
12th April 2011 On the second day, we continued with two more lectures-human reproductive system by Associate Professor Dr San San Thwin and human cardiovascular system by Puan Fazlin Zaini, followed by demonstration of gross specimens on those particular topics. The class finished at about 5.30pm. 13th April 2011 On the third day, the students and teachers had an opportunity to learn how the histology slides were
prepared. This session was conducted by the Laboratory Unit Staff. Firstly, they had a lecture on tissue
processing and staining procedures given by Cik Noor Hasni Emjah. After that, they were divided into four
smaller groups. Each group had a demonstration of embedding (to make a tissue block) and sectioning (to cut
the tissue block) techniques done by Puan Ong Gaik Bei. They also had a chance to do ‘hands on’ Haematoxylin
and Eosin staining assissted by En Suriadi Muhammad Sujari and Cik Noor Hasni Emjah. They had a chance to
stain four slides. The session ended at 5:30 pm.
14th April 2011 On the fourth day, a histology class was conducted. The students had a chance to observe and identify the
histology slides. Associate Professor Dr San San Thwin, assisted by Puan Fazlin, conducted a brief explanation
on selected histology slides, using a microscope fixed with a camera which was projected on to two television
screens. There were eight slides which included the small intestine, skin, ligament, bone, cartilage, adipose
tissue, testis and ovary. After the brief explanation, the students had a chance to identify and study those se-
lected slides fixed on the microscope, with the aid of photomicrographs. This session finished at 5.30pm.
26
20th April 2011 On the fifth day, the students were introduced to the cadavers in the dissection hall. They were divided into
three groups and each group was attached to one lecturer. The lecturers were Prof Myo Than, Dr Soe Lwin and
Dr Maung Myint. The lecturer demonstrated the identification of instruments used in the dissection. Then, the
lecturer demonstrated the technique to reflect the skin and the fascia in the region of the upper limb. Some
students also had a chance to dissect by themselves! Although they were tired, they were excited and continued
dissecting until 6 00 pm.
21st April 2011 On the last day, we conducted an objective structured practical examination (OSPE) like assessment for the
students. There were 10 stations and the time allocated for each station was 2 minutes. 39 students sat for the
test but unfortunately one student fell sick and did not turn up. After the assessment, while the lecturers were
marking the answer sheets, the students and teachers went on a campus tour escorted by Encik Khairul Anuar
Mohd Hasan. They visited the Pathology museum and the Library. Then, the students and teachers were
brought to the Blue Lecture Hall for the closing session.
The closing session was chaired by Associate Professor Dr Tin Win from the Surgery Department. This session
was attended by our Deputy Dean (Academic), Associate Professor Dr Mohammad Abd Rahman, Principal of
SERATAS, Puan Rahimah Mohd Sura, Alumni-SERATAS, Dr Zulkarimah, staff of Anatomy department ,Marketing
department and also from other disciplines. Certificates of attendance were given to the students by our Deputy
Dean (Academic). Three best students were given tokens and certificates for the first, second and third prizes.
Tokens of appreciation were also given to the Biology teachers, Puan Norasmah and Puan Jamilah. Finally the
Deputy Dean (Academic), presented the to give our group photo, as a souvenir to the Super Principal, Puan

My Surprise Encounter with Form 4 and 5 Students at UniKL-RCMP Associate Professor Dr San San Thwin Anatomy Department One fine day, amidst our busy schedule of Final Examination of Phase 1 A and 1 B , I was informed by our Dean, Prof Hashami, that my colleague , Puan Fazlin and I will be organising a short course emphasising on the practical aspects of Human Anatomy and Histology for form 4 and 5 students from Seratas. After a brief meeting with our staff from the Anatomy, Laboratory and Marketing departments, we came up with a tentative timetable. This timetable was confirmed with the principal and staff of Seratas in another meeting. I happened to take classes on theory and practical aspects of the respiratory and reproductive system and histology. I noticed that the students were enthusiastic and excited during and after the class, asking many questions. They asked questions on types of cartilage and bone, how they differ, endometriosis, ectopic pregnancy etc. They knew how to differentiate the pulmonary artery from the vein on the lung models .I thought “Wow some of them are better than my medical students” My colleagues, Prof Myo Than, Dr Soe Lwin and Dr Maung Myint who demonstrated on dissection of the cadaver, also found the students to be energetic and showed keen interest in dissection and some of them had hands- on practical session. During those two weeks of the course, in spite of the rain all 40 of them and two biology teachers came from Taiping and attended our classes regularly. On the last day we conducted a short test which was like objective structured practical examination ( OSPE). Most of them performed well. Over eighty percent of students scored more than 50%.Three of them scored more than 80% in their test. Suprisingly an Indian student, a form 4 student scored first, then a Malay student scored second and a Chinese student scored third prizes. We had a “One Malaysia Concept “which happened automatically. I would like to conclude by saying that it was a wonderful and enriching experience for me, since I have never had such an experience in my lifetime.

DRINK SUFFICIENT WATER……………….. By Divan Mohaideen Abbas, Senior lecturer- Unit Physiotherapy
Daily sufficient water intake is very important for the normal body function. Let us see some magical effects of water. 1. Stay Slimmer With Water Trying to lose weight? Water revs up metabolism and helps you feel full. Replace calorie-laden beverages with water, and drink a glass before meals to help you feel fuller. Drinking more water also helps amp up metabolism - especially if your glass is icy cold. Your body must work to warm the water up, burning a few extra calories in the process.
2. Water Boosts Your Energy If you’re feeling drained and depleted, get a pick-me-up with water. Dehydration makes you feel fatigued. Water helps the blood transport oxygen and other essential nutrients to your cells. If you’re getting enough water, your heart also doesn’t have to work as hard to pump blood throughout your body.
3. Lower Stress with Water 85% of your brain tissue is water. If you’re dehydrated, both your body and your mind will be stressed. If you’re feeling thirsty, you’re already a little dehydrated. To keep stress levels down, keep a glass of water at your desk or tote a sports bottle and sip regularly.
4. Build Muscle Tone with Water Drinking water helps prevent muscle cramping and lubricates joints in the body. When you’re well hydrated, you can exercise longer and stronger without "hitting the wall."]
5. Nourish Your Skin
Fine lines and wrinkles are deeper when you’re dehydrated. Water is nature’s own beauty cream. Drinking water hydrates skin cells and plumps them up, making your face look younger. It also flushes out impurities and improves circulation and blood flow, leaving your face clean, clear, and glowing.
6. Stay Regular With Water Along with fiber, water is essential to good digestion. Water helps dissolve waste particles and passes them smoothly through your digestive tract. If you’re dehydrated, your body absorbs all the water, leaving your colon dry and making it more difficult to pass waste.
31
7. Water Reduces Kidney Stones
The rate of painful kidney stones is rising because people - including children - aren't drinking enough water. Water dilutes the salts and minerals in your urine that form the solid crystals known as kidney stones. Kidney stones can't form in diluted urine, so reduce your risk with plenty of water!
Are You Drinking Enough Water? Generally, nutritionists recommend we follow the "8x8 rule. "Drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day. You may need more water if you exercise or sweat heavily. You may need less water if you drink other beverages often.
So, Drink sufficient water…………

My student the “Datuk” Dr. Aung Myat Thwin Anaesthesiologist UniKL RCMP
I am a foreigner working at the University of KualaLumpur, Royal College of Medicine Perak. I have been trying my best to learn the language, livelihood, customs and titles given in this land of Malaysia. For some reason, I am intrigued by the honorary titles bestowed on people. One day, while walking with a fellow lecturer towards the electronic thumb print machine at the foyer, one of my students greeted me. As it was a rare thing to have a medical student who is forty five years old, I returned his greetings warmly. When I first met him in my class, I had told him that I admired him because he had set a good example to all others and that it is never too late to do what one wanted in life. I also found him to be fully dedicated to his studies. He had set his goal in life and was pursuing it with full determination. Although married with children, he made it possible for his family to continue their goals, while he pursued his own. We had a short chat and then he continued on his way. Then my friend asked me whether I knew who he was. I told him that he was a student of mine. He asked me if I knew that he was a “Datuk”. I was amazed. It was only then that I knew that my student was not only an adult learner but also a Datuk. I had wondered what a Datuk would look like and now I had one in my own class. He was just an ordinary person, sweet and obliging. While trying to find out what a Datuk actually meant, I asked one of my Malaysian friends whether he would be happy if he were bestowed with a Datukship and he immediately said no. I was amazed for the second time. In my mind I was wondering why on earth one would reject such a prestigious title. So I queried him further. I was amused when he told me that though a Datukship is a honourable title, the title holder not only does not have any monetary benefits or special privileges but it will cost him much to attend the social events and is also expected to contribute to various charities. He said that he was willing but cannot afford it. I think that we are fortunate to have a Datuk as a student in our University. He is truly a man who wants to help the people. He must be quite a successful person as he can now attend medical university full time. He must also have set aside money for his wife and children too. I assumed that he could afford a Datukship. But I was amazed for the third time when he told me that for the past three years he had failed to attend those ceremonial gatherings. I think he had just enough money for himself and his family. Now I understand what my friend had told me. He was not a person who is extremely wealthy. He attended this medical university because he truly wanted to help people.

He was given this Datukship because of his devotion and dedication to the people with his NGO work in his youth. And as he grew older he realized that if he were a doctor he would be able to accomplish more for the people. This is the reason why he had chosen this noble profession. So he and his family had to tighten their belts for some years. (Though I must admit, a little shamefully, that this was not the main reason why I chose this profession). At first, I had assumed that with his Datukship and his being a Bumiputra, he would have secured financial help from MARA. People were saying that MARA helps a lot. I am sorry to admit that I had another of my amazements again. He did not get any help from the higher ups. In spite of that he was smiling. He told me that there were others, especially the younger students who needed the help more than he did. He is such a wonderful person that I just wanted to kiss him on the spot. Let me tell you about the other day when he was excitedly telling me about an incident when a lady was snatched from the jaws of death by the medical team at the hospital. It was about a lady with a problematic pregnancy. She had toxaemia. It had caused an immediate heart failure in her. She couldn’t lie flat on the bed without getting breathless. She had a very high blood pressure and was in labor. Being a medical person with 34 years of experience in Myanmar, it was not a new thing for me. But the Datuk was experiencing it for the first time in his life and he was enjoying the drama and the eventual success. My Datuk told me how the specialists had handled the case. The lady was intubated immediately, transported to the operating theatre and operated on. The heart failure was controlled immediately with various drugs. The hypertension was brought down. The baby was delivered successfully. The lady was kept in the ICU for two days and was discharged after five days. While telling me all those things there was radiance in his face. He was enjoying it. I thought he was dreaming of the days when he would be playing the role of the specialists in front of him. He just wanted to be like us - not for the money but for the sake of helping people in need. After listening to him, I was happy that I had given the assignments to my students to write case reports of whatever that interests them. I did not expect that it would have such an impact on this man, the Datuk. And finally I must say that it had an effect on me too.
