Clifton has been on a journey for over 150 years. Against constantly shifting backdrops, the School had to adapt, to respond, but remain true to its founders’ vision; to be an

inclusive, successful and relevant institution and to provide children with a springboardto succeed on their subsequent and varied journeys.

Typically remembered with affection and gratitude by our alumni, the School beganintegrating girls with boys thirty years ago. It has enjoyed a strong academic

renaissance in the last ten years and music, drama and sporting successes haveflourished. Yet it has strived not to lose sight of its intention to cultivate the all-rounder

and hard-worker and to give children a great and balanced start.

Swathes of Old Cliftonians maintain loyal links to the School and reunions across world speak volumesfor the goodwill that is felt. Parents of OCs also seem happy to engage with the School and give the

impression their financial sacrifices have been well made.

But sadly, one key item has changed; the explosion in School fees relative to income across the UK overthe last twenty years. This unwelcome trend has created barriers that used not to be so pronounced. It

seems plain wrong that for many professional, hard-working, middle-income families, the opportunity toattend Clifton has become an unreachable goal. In this regard, Clifton is no different from other academic

establishments, yet in one respect it is. Namely that it has lagged behind in developing its fund-raising capabilities.

Whilst good at engaging with its former pupils and their families, we have been reluctant, oftenunderstandably, to ask our OC and parental communities if they might be able to help with creating

opportunities for the next generation.

Our goal is uncomplicated, but very demanding; to help make it possible for more children to benefitfrom the great fortune we shared and to be a strong and positive force in shaping their futures.

Thank you for anything you feel able to contribute and we welcome the opportunity to sit down anddiscuss fund-giving opportunities with you directly.

Simon Brewer, Chairman CCDT

Welcome to the Percival Dinner. From the very beginning of its history, Percival’s visionfor Clifton was that the College would be as widely accessible as possible. Today the

College can be rightly proud of the many students who do receive financial help and soare able to benefit from the life changing opportunities that Clifton has to offer. It isalso right that we acknowledge the impact that those students have had during theirtime at the School, be that as top academics, outstanding sportsmen and women, orbrilliant musicians and actors. Since the founding of the College, our ability to offer

such support has relied on the philanthropy of others, who have, through their personalgenerosity, changed the lives of young people.

Tonight, as well as proving to be a highly enjoyable evening, is also an appeal to ask you to give asgenerously as you can so that we may continue with a cause that sat at the heart of Percival’s wish for

the School. Best wishes

Dr Tim Greene, Head Master
