1. Get the lead out: As per the EPA Regulations, all paint contractors must observe for lead-safe practices and be certified to perform this work. The rule applies to houses built before 1978, when lead paint was banned for residential use, especially those that are occupied by children. But, the rule is not imposed for DIY activities. But, to protect your family from airborne lead particles, you should follow the regulations.

2. Wash the Exterior: Paint doesn’t stick well to the wall if the surface is dirty. Make sure to wash the surface to make it clean and dirt free. You can use a cleaning agent by mixing water with a phosphate-free cleanser as it does not harm plantings. You can hand-apply the solution with a sponge, but that requires a lot of up-and-down on a ladder. If possible, you can use a pressure washer to apply the solution to the wall.

3. Scrape-off loose paint: Removing loose flakes of paint is necessary to make the surface even. So, once the surface or the clapboards are dry, remove the loose flakes. You can use a handheld scrape or putty knives for the job. Scrape in random, multiple directions, but don’t gouge the wood or the wall.

You can use a pad sander or random-orbit fitted with 80-grit sandpaper to smooth out any remaining rough spots. Take care not to push so hard that you leave sander marks in the wood.

5. Fill and Repair: A painting job is incomplete without the filling and repair of the wood or surface. So, the next step to perfect exterior paint job is to fill and repair the siding. 8. Choose the Right paint: After applying the primer, the next step is to select the right paint. Painting with water-based acrylic latex is so much easier than dealing with oil-based paints. As a rule,’ the higher the sheen, the better the paint is at blocking the sun’s damaging rays.’ A gallon of premium exterior latex costs $35 to $45.

9. Apply Top Coat: Do not apply the paint again and again, layer upon layer. The more layers, the



more likely the paint is to flake off later. It is important for you to understand that applying more paint will not simplify your work rather the less you apply, the stronger it is. Another thing you need to know is that while you have selected a cream or yellow shades for a house painted white earlier, a single coat will work well. But, if you have selected a dark color, then you need two coats at least.

10. Maintenance is must: While you are getting your house painted, you are investing your time and money both. So, it is your responsibility to maintain it. If you wish to extend the life of the paint job done, it is important to inspect the caulk once a year. Along this, if you find any cracks or digs, get them replaced as soon as possible. Secondly, keep a check on the molds. The stains from nesting birds and pollen should be removed timely. At last, for the blisters and peels which may appear with the passage of time, it is advisable to fill them before they spread and get larger!
