TRANSCRIPT

The Basics of BitTorrent BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer (P2P) protocol (a description and set of rules on how to do things) designed to distribute data in such a way that the original distributor would be able to decrease bandwidth usage while still being able to reach at least the same amount of people. Cohen's idea was to "break" the file being transferred into smaller segments called pieces.

BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer (P2P) protocol designed to distribute large amounts of data.

We "break" the file being transferred into smaller segments called pieces.

The Basics of BitTorrent

5

Initially, a file provider makes his file available to the network. He is called a seed.

He then allows others, named peers, to connect and download the file. Each peer who downloads a part of the data makes it available to other peers to download. The Basics of BitTorrent

15

Torrent A file you receive from the web server (the one that ends in .torrent ) . The file contains information about the data you want to download, not the data itself.

ClientsA client is a bittorrent program. Keywords

16

Trackers A server that handles and stores the torrent files.

In order for everyone to be able to locate one another, there needs to be some centralized location that peers could connect to in order to obtain the other peers' IP addresses.

BitTorrent trackers serve as this centralized location. A tracker collects peers IP addresses and port numbers to share with other peers connecting to that same swarm. Keywords
