PERFINS of Great Britain. Queen Victoria © The Perfin Society Queen Victoria - Surface Printed 3d Issues. The 3d stamp was introduced in the early 1860’s, printed by Thomas De La Rue using a surface printing technique as opposed to line engraved. The design consists of the Queen’s head in what looks like a horse’s collar, within which are the words THREE PENCE POSTAGE. In each of the corners is a trefoil arrangement within which are placed small white corner letters reflecting the position of the stamp on the printing plate. The ‘spandrels’ are shaded. Although plate 1 was defective, plate 2 was registered and put to press on 17 th October 1861. However, it was considered to be too similar to the corresponding 4d value and was never issued. The shading to the ‘spandrels’ on plate 2 were removed and the plate put to press again on the 19 th March 1862. The stamps were issued to the public for use on 1 st May 1862. A plate 3 was produced, exactly as plate 2, but with two small white dots either side of the word ‘Postage’, and registered 25 th August 1862. However, plate 3 was for some reason never ‘put to press’. Not surprisingly, none of the above stamps have yet been reported with a Perfin! The basic design was modified to incorporate a visible plate number, and large white corner letters against a coloured background. Plate 4 was the first to be issued in this new format, being put to press on 19 th December 1864, and issued on 1 st March 1865. In July 1867 the watermark changed from ‘Emblems’ to ‘Spray’ which involved printings from plate 4, along with the next six plates, plates 5-10. The next change, effective from 5 th July 1873, was to alter the corner letters to become coloured against a white background. This change was introduced specifically to save time during plate production. Plates 11-20 (excluding plate 13, which was defective) can be found with this arrangement, again on ‘Spray’ watermarked paper. Another change of watermark, this time to the ‘Imperial Crown’, occurred in February 1881. This also involved a re-arrangement of the printing plate to make two panes, each of 120 stamps arranged in ten rows of twelve. Plates 20 and 21 were printed from in this new format. Two white dots Plate 3

Queen Victoria - Surface Printed 3d Issues. Although plate 1 was defective, plate 2 was registered and put to press on 17th October 1861. However, it was considered to be too similar to the corresponding 4d value and was never issued. The shading to the ‘spandrels’ on plate 2 were removed and the plate put to press again on the 19th March 1862. The stamps were issued to the public for use on 1st May 1862. A plate 3 was produced, exactly as plate 2, but with two small white dots either side of the word ‘Postage’, and registered 25th August 1862. However, plate 3 was for some reason never ‘put to press’.

Not surprisingly, none of the above stamps have yet been reported with a Perfin!

The basic design was modified to incorporate a visible plate number, and large white corner letters against a coloured background. Plate 4 was the first to be issued in this new format, being put to press on 19th December 1864, and issued on 1st March 1865. In July 1867 the watermark changed from ‘Emblems’ to ‘Spray’ which involved printings from plate 4, along with the next six plates, plates 5-10. The next change, effective from 5th July 1873, was to alter the corner letters to become coloured against a white background.

The final throw of the dice regarding the issue was a change of colour to Purple, overprinted “3d” in Carmine, a process probably carried out at Somerset House. The so-called ‘Surcharge’ stamp (along with a companion 6d stamp) was issued on the 1st January 1883, shortly to be replaced by the 3d (and 6d) stamps from the ‘Lilac & Green’ issue on 1st April 1884.

different watermarks found on plates 4 and 20.
