Foreword

Elementis Specialties supplies three classes of
rheological additives for waterborne systems.
♦ Clays and modified clays
♦ Convenfional and hydrophobically modified
alkali-swellable emulsions (ASE/HASE)
♦ Nonionic synthetic associative thickeners
(NiSAT)
- Polyether polyurethanes (HEUR/PEPU)
- Polyether polyols (PEPO)
Each product type has its own characteristic
properties. Careful selection of these rheological
additives will ensure that the right set of performance
properties are achieved in formulated products.
Clays and Modified ClaysElementis Specialties clay products for waterborne
systems are mainly based on hectorite, a naturally
occurring smectite clay. Hectorite is a sodium
magnesium lithium silicate mineral composed of thin,
colloidal sized platelets. In the dry state, the platelets
are stacked together in fine aggregates. Under the
correct conditions of wetting and shear, the stacks
will swell, delaminate and disperse in water to form a
viscous and thixotropic suspension.
In practice, the natural clay is refined to remove
impurities so as to develop it’s high rheological
efficiency. The clay can also be modified further
by blending with suitable polymers to achieve
optimum flow or improved wetting characteristic for
specific applications. Such a modification imparts
excellent dispersion and rheological performance for
waterborne applications.
Rheological Additives
BENTONE® DE
Refined natural hectorite clay modified for easy
dispersion. It allows for high pregel solids (14%)
with pourable viscosity. BENTONE® DE provides
excellent in-can stability and sag control for a wide
range of coating formulations.
BENTONE® LTOrganically modified refined natural hectorite clay.
It provides excellent mid and low shear thickening
efficiency, suspension property, sag resistance and
in-can stability, as well as a wide pH acceptance
for waterborne systems.
BENTONE® DY CEBENTONE® DY CE is an optimized blend of
smectite clay with a natural polymer. This product
was specifically designed to prevent syneresis in
standard architectural paints while maintaining
open time. It is also suitable for industrial coatings
including waterborne epoxies.

BENAQUA® 4000A blend of hectorite clay and organic polymer that
exhibits very high low shear viscosity and superb
shear-thinning rheological behavior which is beneficial
for providing outstanding suspension control, sag
resistance in textured coatings.
Hydrophobically Modified Alkali-Swellable Emulsion Thickeners (HASE)Hydrophobically modified alkali-swellable rheological
additives provide thickening and rheological
performance in waterborne systems by molecular
chains extension into water phase under alkaline
condition. The hydrophobic groups along the HASE
polymer chains associate with other components
(e.g. binder, pigment, surfactant, etc.) in paint
formulations. They provide predictable viscosity
development, ease of handling and the flexibility of
being post-added in the manufacturing process.
Through innovative polymer design, these thickeners
are able to provide a wide range of rheological
behavior from highly shear thinning to near Newtonian
flow. They also enhance spatter resistance while
improving flow and leveling. Some of these products
are suitable replacement (partially or completely) for
HEC and HMHEC. Furthermore, HASE are enzyme
resistant unlike HEC/HMHEC.
Fig. 3 Thickening mechanism of HASE rheological additives
RHEOLATE® 150 , RHEOLATE® 465 and
RHEOLATE® AP 425 are newly developed VOC free
HASE thickeners for the Asia Pacific coatings market
providing environment-friendly and cost effective
solutions to formulators of waterborne decorative
paints.
RHEOLATE® 150Cost-effective HASE thickener for low to mid shear
viscosity build. It is low odor, APEO and VOC-free
offering excellent color development and syneresis
control for use in decorative coatings, adhesives,
textile, waterproofing coatings, etc. Often used as a
partial substitute for HEC and HMHEC.
RHEOLATE® 465A strong hydrophobically modified alkali swellable
acrylic thickener that demonstrates both ionic and
associative thickening mechanisms with an excellent
balance of the respective properties. This provides
both mid and high shear rate viscosity with balanced
performance forsuperior package and application
properties.
RHEOLATE® AP 425High performance HASE thickener for mid shear
viscosity build. It is low in odor, APEO and VOC-
free offering superior balance of sag resistance and
flow and leveling, color development and syneresis
control for a wide range of coatings and non-coatings
applications. Can be used a sole thickener giving
a good balance of low, medium and high shear
viscosity build.

Non-Ionic Synthetic Associative Thickeners (NISAT) The structure of Non-ionic synthetic associative
thickeners can be schematically represented as two
hydrophobic heads and a hydrophilic backbone.
The analogy with the traditional representation of
a surfactant is obvious and indeed these materials
behave in many respects just like surfactants in
coatings formulations.
The properties of these associative thickeners are
controlled by changing the frequency and chemistry
of the hydrophobic units. More hydrophobic caps
give stronger association and shear thinning flow.
If the caps are less hydrophobic, association is
weak and the additive gives a more Newtonian flow
behavior.
Elementis Specialties offers two series of
RHEOLATE® associative rheological additives: one
is based on polyether polyurethane and the other on
polyether polyol chemistry. Both classes are capable
of providing the type of flow expected of a solvent-
based alkyd paint. This leads to ease of application
and improvements in roller spatter resistance, flow,
leveling and film build.
Polyether polyurethane associative thickeners
enhance the finish quality of paints and coatings.
However their associative interactions are strongly
influenced by other formulation ingredients such
as latex (type, particle size and surface chemistry),
co-solvents and surfactants. Thus their rheological
properties may vary to some extent in different
formulation systems.

Comparing with polyether polyurethanes, polyether polyol rheological additives provide the following advantages:
♦ Less sensitivity to particle size of latex ♦ Less effect by surfactant♦ Less sensitivity to changes in co-solvent ♦ Better color acceptance and stability
Elementis Specialties offers five series of non-ionic
associative rheological additives, namely the
well-established standard PEPU RHEOLATE® 200
series, the PEPO RHEOLATE® 300 series, the
environmentally-friendly RHEOLATE® 600 series,
the DeuRheo WT series and the high active content
RHEOLATE® FX 1000 series. In recent years,
Elementis Specialties launched three new products,
i.e. RHEOLATE® 299, RHEOLATE CVS® -15 and
RHEOLATE® 350 D for the coatings market.
RHEOLATE® 299A polyether polyurethane rheological additive
specially developed for spraying systems, low odor,
APEO and organotin-free offering outstanding shear
thinning property, excellent spray atomization and
thickening response. It does not cause reduction in
gloss and transparency when used in automotive
refinish, wood coatings, anti-corrosive and plastic
coatings.
Fig. 8 Effect of surfactant on thickening behavior of NiSAT rheological additives
RHEOLATE CVS® -15A new polyether polyurethane rheological additive,
low odor as well as APEO, VOC and organotin-free. It
efficiently builds mid and high shear viscosity as well
as imparts excellent leveling performance.
Compared with traditional polyether urea polyurethane
rheological additives, it enhances viscosity stability
and color acceptance of base paints upon addition
of colorants. It is recommended for use in high quality
architectural coatings, adhesives, inks, industrial
and leather coatings.
RHEOLATE® 350 DSupplied in 50% active materials, this polyether
polyol rheological additive is low in odor as well as
APEO and VOC-free, provides high shear viscosity
build as well as excellent flow and leveling, film build,

Foam control is a complex problem. No single
defoamer is adequate for all applications. Foam and
bubbles can be easily generated during production,
transfer and application processes. Careful selection
of defoamer is crucial to ensure adequate foam
control while not being too incompatible with the
coating system that often gives rise to surface
defects such as fish-eye, craters, cissing, loss of
gloss, etc. Modern coating formulations present ever
increasing challenges to formulators due to the need
to comply with VOC regulations and the use of newer
generation binders and additives. By consolidating
the existing DAPRO® and Defom defoamers with
the new range of defoamers that Elementis acquired
from Hi-Mar Specialty Chemicals, a more diversified
product portfolio is now at the customer’s disposal.
Our customers can now choose from a broad range
of products to tackle their foam problem, be it in the
formulation, production or application processes.
Defoamers DAPRO® DF/AP 7000 defoamers are dispersions
of ultra-fine hydrophobic particles in mineral oils.
Apart from giving high defoaming efficiency, they also
possess excellent storage stability. It is suggested to
evaluate few suitable DAPRO® foam suppressors
to determine the most effective one for any given
formulation. Other DAPRO® defoamers are typically
used in industrial coating formulations. They have
a range of chemistries to be compatible with most
systems. For trouble shooting purposes the best
bubble breakers are DAPRO® DF 880, DAPRO® DF 1760 and particularly DAPRO® DF 1492.
DAPRO® AP 7010, DAPRO® AP 7015 and
DAPRO® AP 7071 are a series of environmentally-
friendly and economical products produced in Asia
Pacific region.

PP Adhesion PromoterPolypropylene (PP) and thermoplastic polyolefin
(TPO) are used widely in car industry, cosmetics,
plastic films, toys, household appliances and
packaging materials. These substrates are hard to
coat due to the high surface crystallinity, low surface
energy and polarity. Chlorinated polyolefins have
been successfully used as adhesion promoters
in solvent-based coatings for these substrates. To
meet the market need for lower VOC formulations,
waterborne chlorinated polyolefin dispersions have
been introduced for this purpose.
Through its relentless effort, Elementis Specialties
has recent ly ro l led out an acry l ic modi f ied
waterborne chlorinated polyolefin dispersion
DAPRO® ACP-16W which is APEO and VOC-free
and provides superb aidhesion on polypropylene
(PP) and thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) substrates.
DAPRO® ACP-16W can be used as the main resin
or incorporated with other resins. It can be used as
clear coat or colored coat for waterborne automotive
basecoat, adhesives and inks, etc.
Physical PropertiesComposition : acrylic modified chlorinated
polyolefin
Non-volatile content : ca. 30 %
Solvent : water
pH value : 7.0 - 9.0
Appearance : milky white to milky yellow liquid
Substrate Wetting, Mar & Slip and Leveling AgentsSurface defects such as cratering, de-wetting.
shrinkage, marring, blocking and bubbles are some of
the common problems faced by waterborne coating
formulators. Wetting and leveling agents and waxes
are frequently employed to solve these defects.
These are multi-functional surface control additives,
which prevent cratering and shrinkage, enhance
wetting, spreading and leveling properties, as well
as provide smooth tactile, anti-scratching and anti-
blocking properties. DAPRO® and Levaslip additive
series have long been used to help formulators
overcome these issues.
Wax DispersionsWax dispersions impart scratch, mar and abrasion
resistance, anti-blocking, and tactile properties to
coatings by migrating to the surfaces during the film
formation process. Thus different wax dispersions,
coating formulations and techniques will lead to a
variety of surface performance properties.
SLIP-AYD® wax dispersions include natural and
synthetic waxes, polyethylene and polyolefin blends,
each dispersed in a variety of solvent water/vehicle
blends. These vehicle blends have been selected for
optimum performance in the widest range of coating
systems. The degree of dispersion has been carefully
controlled for reproducible results.
SLIP-AYD® wax dispersions will mix easily into a
coating at any point of manufacture, including final
let down. They can also be post-added with simple
stirring to correct a problem in a finished coating.
SLIP-AYD® dispersions as delivered are thixotropic
and should always be mixed before use to reduce
their viscosity and allow for easy addition.
Waterborne Speciality Additives
35
Dispersions of the same wax can show dramatic
differences in performance depending on the liquid
phase used in the dispersion. Any change in the
wax dispersion or in the coating can alter the rate
at which the wax will come to the surface as the
coating dries. In extreme cases, one SLIP-AYD®
dispersion may have no effect in a given coating
while another based on the same wax in a different
vehicle will provide the required results.
Rust InhibitorsMetal surfaces such as steel structures and tin plates
are easily oxidized upon coating with waterborne
systems. In the extreme case, flash rust develops as
early as during the drying process especially for high
carbon content or sandblasted metal substrates.
Flash rusting is an annoying issue for formulators
when they design waterborne coatings for metal
substrates. Waterborne coatings also tend to
corrode metallic packaging materials especially the
joint areas during product storage (in-can corrosion).
Therefore, incorporation of a suitable rust inhibitor
is important for prevention of flash rusting and
corrosion of metal substrates (in-can corrosion).
Compared with the traditional rust inhibitors, the
NALZIN® series provide more effective flash rust
resistance, lower water sensitivity, and longer
term in-can corrosion resistance, while meeting
environmentally-friendly and nontoxic requirements.
NALZIN® FA 179 is a corrosion inhibitor for
waterborne coating systems to counteract flash rust.
It is also recommended as an inhibitor against in-can
corrosion.
NALZIN® FA 379 is a liquid corrosion inhibitor for
waterborne coatings, based on an organic zinc
complex with a nitrogen compound. Although
this product is nitrite free, it still gives excellent
performance as a permanent corrosion inhibitor in
coatings. NALZIN® FA 379 also counteracts both
flash and early rust formation.
NALZIN® FA 579 is a nitrite free organic zinc
complex used in waterborne coatings to combat
flash rusting and in-can corrosion. It is suitable for
use in low pH formulations.
