In the first quarter of 2020, agriculture declined by

1.2 percent. This was attributed to the contraction in crops and

fisheries production. On the other hand, livestock and poultry

posted production increases during the period. At current prices,

the value of agricultural production amounted to PhP 441.2 billion.

This was higher by 3.4 percent from the previous year’s level.

Crop production decreased by 2.1 percent. It shared

54.9 percent in the total agricultural output. Production went

down for palay at 3.6 percent and corn at 3.4 percent. Output

declines were registered for calamansi by 10.9 percent, eggplant

by 6.4 percent, abaca by 5.7 percent, coconut by 5.1 percent,

potato by 2.5 percent and banana by 2.4 percent. Lower

production levels were also recorded in tomato, mango, tobacco

and ampalaya. Cacao came up with higher production increment

by 16.7 percent. Onion production grew by 7.3 percent. A

6.9 percent output growth was posted in sugarcane. Collectively,

“other crops” production contracted by 0.8 percent. The value of

Livestock, which increased by 0.5 percent in output,

contributed 17.9 percent to the total agricultural production.

Production went up for hog by 0.7 percent and goat by

1.1 percent. Dairy exhibited a 9.3 percent growth in output.

Downtrends in production were exhibited by carabao at

1.9 percent and cattle at 0.5 percent. At current prices, livestock

production valued at PhP 75.7 billion was lower by 2.3 percent this

quarter.

Poultry posted a 3.9 percent increment in output. It shared

14.3 percent in the total agricultural production. Chicken

production grew by 3.3 percent while duck production inched up

by 0.8 percent. Higher output increases were recorded for eggs by

5.8 percent for chicken and 3.6 percent for duck. At current prices,

the value of poultry production amounted to PhP 62.9 billion, an

expansion of 14.4 percent during the quarter.

Fisheries output, accounting for 12.8 percent of the total

agricultural production, contracted by 5.2 percent. Among the

major species, higher decreases in production were reported for

tiger prawn by 31.1 percent, mudcrab by 18.2 percent, slipmouth

by 11.2 percent and fimbriated sardines by 10.6 percent. Likewise,

lower outputs were noted in tilapia, big-eyed scad, Indian

mackerel, yellowfin tuna, seaweed, bigeye tuna, skipjack, frigate

tuna, grouper, cavalla and roundscad during the quarter.

Meanwhile, production of Bali sardinella and blue crab expanded

by 13.7 percent and 14.5 percent, respectively. Milkfish production

was up by 0.8 percent. Production of “other fisheries” dropped by

3.3 percent. The value of fisheries production at current prices

amounted to PhP 63.3 billion, representing a 0.1 percent increase

from the previous year’s record.
