It seems strange to be casting my mind forward to summer 2011, but asyou’ll see on the facing page we’re announcing next year’s HOME festivaland a limited number of early bird tickets (the perfect Christmas present!)are now on sale. We had lots of great feedback on last year and are planningchanges in direct response to your thinking. Before then we’ve got another packed spring programme to welcome inthe New Year. Our ShipWrites series continues with performances by StuartSilver, Pencil Stringhorn, Matt Harvey and Molly Naylor; we’re exploring newmusic with a commission for two Devon train journeys and performancesby Powerplant and Britten Sinfonia, will perform a piece by the new SummerSchool artistic director, John Woolrich.We’re also delighted to present Hetain Patel, whose creative journey hastaken him from photography to performance; Mind the Gap, directed byformer Dartington student Tim Wheeler; and the Orchestra of the Age ofEnlightenment (p.17) as a late addition.Matthew Linley, Live Art Producer

The Britten Sinfonia is once again collaboratingwith celebrated British tenor Mark Padmore forour early spring orchestral concert.

The centrepiece of the programme is Britten’sSerenade for tenor, horn and strings - a magicalevocation of twilight and nightfall. Padmorewill sing Purcell songs as realised by Tippett,whose Baroque inspired Little Music is alsofeatured. Walton’s virtuosic and passionateSonata for Strings provides the thrillingclimax to this programme of English music.

Mark has described how he relishes theorchestra’s “palpable sense of adventure” and“particular intimacy and mutual enthusiasm”,which will no doubt shine through in thewonderful surroundings of the Great Hall.

Great DebatesTagore and his relevance forinternational environmentaland social action todayOur Great Debates series continuesDartington’s long tradition of tackling theimportant issues of the day. This evening’sdebate is combined with a networking dinnerto enable further discussion of the topicbetween the speakers and audience.

Speakers include the author and co-founderof Schumacher College, Satish Kuma; Nobelprize nominee Aruna Roy; and leading climatechange activist Malini Mehta. Chaired byCharlie McConnell, Director of SchumacherCollege.

2011 marks the 150th anniversary of thebirth of the Nobel Prize winner RabindranathTagore, who was a huge influence for LeonardElmhirst and the Dartington experiment. Thisdebate will launch a year of activities acrossDartington’s programmes, including theTagore Festival in May (see p18).

WellsCathedralSchool WindEnsembleWells Cathedral School Wind Ensemble wasfounded in 1990 by its current conductor,Dr Kevin Murphy. The ensemble has earneda national reputation as a leading proponentof chamber music for woodwind and brassand performs regularly throughout the UK.The group has commissioned three newworks from Malcolm Binney, Colin Touchinand a piece for winds by Malcolm Ellerby.

Currently members of the ensemble areprincipal players in the National YouthOrchestra, National Youth Wind Orchestraand the National Children’s Orchestra.

Local poet, writer and performer, MattHarvey appears in theatres, arts centres andvillage halls up and down the country.

Often heard on BBC Radio 4, he is a regularon Saturday Live and host of Wondermentalist,the comedy-infused, musically enhancedinteractive poetry cabaret. He was also heardaround the world as first official WimbledonChampionships Poet.

Matt’s latet collection of poems, Where EarwigsDare, is described as horticultural, whimsical,ecological, political and just plain funny.

Sonic Journeys is an exciting newcollection of aural landscapes thatconnect the creator, listener andsound with the world around us.

Artists are commissioned to create newworks in response to specific stretches oflandscape that inspire them on journeystaken by foot, train and other modes oftransport. Each new work is recorded andavailable for download for listeners toexperience as they pass through the samelandscape that inspired it.

Together, sounduk, The Dartington HallTrust and Beaford Arts are commissioninga renowned South West artist to create anexclusive new Sonic Journey in responseto two of the most beautiful stretches oftrain line in the South West - the main linebetween Exeter and Totnes and the branchline between Exeter and Barnstaple.

The new works will be recorded and then‘performed’ to passengers travelling throughthe same journey via their own personalheadphones. Together the pieces will forma unique link between North and SouthDevon and a highly evocative experiencefor the listener.

Collection of 20th Century Visual ArtMany visitors who enjoy and support our livearts and film programmes may not also beaware of Dartington’s substantial collectionof 20th century visual art, collected in themain by Leonard and Dorothy Elmhirst, whocollected ceramics on the advice of BernardLeach and pictures by up-and-coming artists.The collection is representative of the manyartists who called Dartington home, such asDavid and Bernard Leach, Cecil and ElisabethCollins, Mark Tobey and Marianne de Trey.Recently having become part of the artsdepartment’s porfolio, the team is currentlyexploring ways to best conserve and exhibitthe collection. Craft Education at DartingtonDartington is home to specialist craft makersand sculptors, two of whom run book-bindingand print-making classes throughout the year,open to all levels of experience from beginnersto experienced artists.Held by Mary Bartlett (book-binding) andMichael Honnor (print-making), the workshopsboast unique collections of expertise andequipment and are among the best in theSouth West.If you would like more info or to sign up foreither course please leave a message with themain Dartington reception on 01803 847000.

Space, a place to createOur new Space initiative provides high qualityarts facilities and spaces where local, nationaland international artists, makers, organisationsand ensembles can create a base, work inresidency or develop new work.

Users include Meredith Monk, English TouringOpera, Soundart Radio, Royal Ballet School,Richard Alston Dance Company and now theOrchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, whowill be in residency from 8 to 9 January incollaboration with South West Music School.
