Executive summary
The Central Department of Geology (CDG) was established in 1986 AD and producing post
graduate man power for the nation. More than 500 students are graduated from this department so
far. Due to the increasing demand of engineering geologist in infrastructure development the CDG
started MSc in engineering geology in 2016 AD. The graduated students are getting placement in
jobs very easily in market. To know the status of the graduated students in market a tracer study is
conducted. The tracer study of 29 recent pass out students (2073 BS) revealed that most the students
are working satisfactorily in different government and non-government institutions. Out of 29
students 14 are working in Department of Irrigation (GoN), 2 are working in Department of Mines
and Geology (GoN), 1 is working in Department of Water Induced Disaster Management (GoN),
and 1 in Ministry of Foreign Affairs (GoN). Similarly 1 graduate is involved in teaching (Tri-
Chandra Campus) and 1 graduate went abroad for PhD under Japanese government fellowship. 8
graduates are found to be involved in private consulting companies and cement industries. Among
29 students, 8 students were female students. 7 of them are working as geologist and hydro
geologist in government services. 1 is working as consultant geologist is private company. The
name list of regular students appeared in final examination in 2072 and 2073 BS (first year and
second year) of the running programs both geology and engineering geology are presented for
educationally disadvantages students (EDS) verification. Similarly name list of regular students
appeared in final examination for enrollment in priority area verification of 2072 and 2073 BS of
running programs both geology and engineering geology are presented. The present study indicates
that the graduates are dominated by Brahmin-Kshetri ethnical community. The EDS (Educationally
Disadvantaged Students) and Dalits are poorly represented in geology and engineering geology
education in CDG.

Introduction
1.1 Background
The Central Department of Geology (CDG) was established at the premises of Tribhuvan
University, Kirtipurin 1986 AD. The formal education in master's degree in geology was started in
1976 at Tri-Chandra Campus, later this was shifted to Kirtipur in 1986 AD. The Bachelor's degree
in geology was started in 1967 in Tri-Chandra Campus. Until 2012 AD, the graduates from the Tri-
Chandra Campus were only source to conduct the master's degree in geology at CDG. In the course
of time the CDG has revised/modified/updated/introduced its curriculum several times to fulfill the
need of the time. Since geology is field oriented discipline, the student of geology spend a
significant amount of time in field training during their study. The intensive field work helps them
to understand the geological problems practically and help them to find out the solution. After 45
years of its establishment the bachelor's level in geology was extended in the second location at
Birendra Multiple Campus, Bharatpur, Chitwan. In 2013 AD, bachelor's levels study was extended
to Central Campus of Technology, Hattisar, Dharan and in 2016 AD, P. N. Campus, Pokhara started
teaching geology in bachelor's level. The CDG started MSc in engineering geology in 2016 AD.
Thus at present CDG is providing education on MSc in geology and MSc in engineering geology
simultaneously. . More than 700 students are graduated from this department and they are serving
the nation through several governmental and non-governmental institutions. The products of CDG
are working on government services such as Department of Mines and Geology (DMG),
Department of Irrigation (DoI), Department of Road (DoR), Department of Electricity Development
(DoED), Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), and many private cement industries. Many of them are
also involved in Civil Engineeringand Environment Science colleges as teaching faculty. This report
is prepared to know the status of the products of CDG in different walks of life and profession.
1.2 Objectives of the study
The main objectives of this study are
To know the present status of students after getting the master's degree in geology from the
CDG.
To know the career opportunities and status of job market after graduation.
To know the quality of the education and competency of the graduates in job market.
28
1.3 Institutional arrangements to conduct the study
The CDG had formed a study team to conduct the survey of the graduate students who passed
master degree from this department in 2016 AD (2073 BS) and running batches. This included an
associate professor, two staffs from administration and account section respectively.
1.4 Graduate batch taken for the study
The Graduates who completed their master's degree in geology in 2073 (2070-73 batch) were
selected in this study. The total number of graduated were 30, excluding 2 dropout students.
1.5 Data collection - Instruments and approach
The students were contacted through emails and social media and the questionnaire were distributed
to them. The graduates returned the questionnaire with the information which was asked for. The
data were analyzed on the basis of information provided to the study team.
1.6 Scope and limitations of the study
Since the graduates already started their profession in different government and non-government
organizations it was difficult to get contact with them in a short notice. However it was possible to
contact them through facebook and emails.

29
2.5 Education and their Contribution to Graduates’ Personal Development
This information was collected via emails.
3. MAJOR FINDINGS:
The status of students presently studying in CDG is presented in annexes. Status of dalit and
educationally disadvantaged students in 2072 and 2073 are presented respectively. Similarly
enrolment in priorities areas in the year of 2072 and 2073 are also presented. Namelist of regular
students appeared in final examinations for educationally disadvantaged student verification for the
year 2072 and 2073 BS were also presented. Tracer study was made for 29 students graduated from
CDG in 2016 AD (2073 AD). Among them most of the students are found to be employed in
various sectors of government and nongovernment organizations. The details are given below.
3.1 Employment status graduates
Most of students graduated in master's level in geology are found to be employment in government
sectors, universities, and private organizations. More than 50 % of the products are being employed
in Ministries and Departments of Government of Nepal. There are ample amount of graduates
working in private consultancies and cement factories. A limited amount is employed in academic
institutions.

Table 2: Present status of graduates of pass out batch 2073 BS (2016 AD).
3.2 Issues Related to the Characteristics, Expectations and Aspirations of Graduates
The graduates of geology are enthusiastic and optimistic in their profession. There are plenty of
opportunities in government jobs as well as in private companies. After completing Master's in
Geology they are eligible to apply for gazetted third class officer (section officer) of the
Government of Nepal. Most of the graduates start preparing for service commission examination
(Lok Sewa Ayog) which is normally occurs in the month of Mangsir. Those who failed in service
commission examinations wait for next year's advertisement or start consulting job in construction
companies (drilling, tunneling companies) or work as a geologist in cement factories.
3.3 Issues Related to the Employment Experience of Graduates
The graduates working in the governmental organizations such as Department of Irrigation,
Department of Mines and Geology, Department of Water Induces Disaster Management are in
31
permanent positions. They are much satisfied with their jobs. The graduates working in consulting
firms and private companies are getting good salary but the nature of their job is temporary. They
are looking for better opportunities in government agencies.
3.4 Issues Related to the Quality and Relevance of Higher Education
The formal education in geology only starts in the Bachelor's level. The students need to study
other subjects such as physics, chemistry, statistics and biology along with geology depending upon
the course combination they prefer. They get the basic concept in every branch of geology in
undergraduate level. Therefore Master's level is supposed to be tuff for them. They have intense
field work for 4 weeks in 1st semester and 4 weeks in 3
rd semester. Apart from this they have at
least 4 week long field work for their dissertation. The time frame of semester system is very much
strict at CDG. Pupils need tremendous efforts and dedication to follow the teachers. The students
mostly suggested to improve the laboratory facilities, upgrade software and library facilities.
3.5 Education and their Contribution to Graduates’ Personal Development
The CDG is contributing the nation by producing competent geologists. The geologists are
providing their technical knowledge in constructing civil infrastructures (such as dams, tunnels,
landslides, water induced disasters, earthquake and other geology related hazards). The graduates
are successfully involved in groundwater exploration in Terai and mid hills. Among 29 graduates
from CDG in 2016, almost half of them are employed in Ministry of Irrigation. Ethnically the
graduates are dominated by Brahmin-Kshetri community. However it seems that the EDS
(Educationally Disadvantaged Students) and Dalits are poorly represented in geology education.
4. IMPLICATIONS TO INSTITUTIONAL REFORM
The CDG is largely reformed in last five years. In 2070 BS semester system was implemented. This
was a big step to upgrade the education standard of the students. The graduate students taken for
tracer study were the first batch since the implementation of the semester system in CDG. In 2072,
the CDG started Master's in engineering geology with the intake of 22 students. The CDG presently
has two buildings placed on 10 ropanies of land. The CDG premise is covered by barbed wire fence.
The older two-storied building has 5 Class Rooms of 50 students capacity each, Room for HOD,
administration and account room, Library, Research Management Cell, Seminar Hall of 80 person
capacity, Geological Museum, Store Room, and 9 rooms for teachers. The newly constructed one-
32
storied building is mainly used for Laboratory. It has two labs and two lab exercise rooms.
However, the department still lacks sufficient teaching staffs. There is Lack of state-of-the-art
technology in areas which have recently emerged in areas of science and technology. Almost all the
faculty members have been confined to classroom teaching. No facilities for research to engage the
teachers outside the classrooms. There is very poor collaboration with government and industry.
5. CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
The graduates from the CDG are mainly placed at the government offices. Many of the students go
for the teaching fields in TU, KU and engineering colleges. The main government offices that offer
geologists, engineering geologist, hydro-geologist and mining engineer posts are: Department of
Mines and Geology, Department of Irrigation, Groundwater Development Board, Nepal Electricity
Authority, DWIDP and Department of Soil Conservation, Department of Electricity Development,
Water and Energy Commission, and Rastrapati Chure-Tarai Madhesh Conservation Development
Board. Parts of the students join private hydropower and mining companies and consultancies.
There is no risk of being unemployed for the graduates in geology so far. Tracer study was made for
29 students graduated from CDG in 2016 AD (2073 AD). Among them most of the students are
found to be employed in various sectors of government and nongovernment organizations. The
name list of regular students appeared in final examination for enrollment in priority area
verification of 2072 and 2073 BS of running programs both geology and engineering geology are
studied. The study indicates that the graduates are dominated by Brahmin-Kshetri ethnical
community. The EDS (Educationally Disadvantaged Students) and Dalits are poorly represented in
geology and engineering geology education in CDG.
