“The Drama Department has gone all out to create a magical space in the small studio theatre.”Barry Willis, Marin Independent Journal

Since its inception over 50 years ago, the highly acclaimed DRAMA PROGRAM at College

of Marin continually inspires students to dwell in the world of musicals, comedies, and dramas

both past and present.

Founded in 1964 by celebrated director James Dunn, the program has become a professional

training ground for Hollywood movie stars, Broadway actors, and community theatre headliners.

Some of the best known graduates are Robin Williams, David Dukes, and Kathleen Quinlan; but

hundreds of students have gone on to study in conservatories and work in academia, national

repertories, television, and film. With over 250 productions to date, the program has earned

numerous honors and its instructors have received many prestigious awards.

The MUSIC PROGRAM has been a vibrant part of the College for over 80 years, starting

with a small orchestra and chorus and blossoming to a comprehensive university-level transfer

program devoted to inspiring a broad spectrum of artists and groundbreaking community

performances. Many alumni have gone on to successful careers in musical performance or

composition in classical, jazz, popular, and film music.

Teaching excellence and creative collaborations with internationally acclaimed musicians have

long established the Music Program as a key artistic contributor to the San Francisco Bay Area

music scene. This great tradition is carried on by our performance groups, including the College

of Marin Symphony Orchestra, Marin Oratorio, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Contemporary

Opera Marin, and the Jazz Ensemble—all of which provide the community with free or low-cost

performances both on campus and throughout Marin County.

The Music Program offers a comprehensive sequence of courses leading to an associate of arts

degree in music or preparing music students for successful transfer into a university program as a

junior. In addition to the music major curriculum, many courses are appropriate for those wishing

to rekindle their musical abilities and interests, increase instrumental or vocal competency, or

perform with a large or small ensemble. Our courses and performing ensembles are also open

to talented high school students interested in further building their skills while establishing a

college GPA and earning arts elective credits.

Franz Josef Haydn — The SeasonsIn Haydn’s last great work, the human condition

and the passage of time are told through the story

of a farmer, his daughter, and her suitor. The old

composer’s thoughts on morality and grandeur shine

through in some of his most varied and fascinating

writing. From the rustic pleasures of the village

peasants to the noble brilliance of the heavenly

chorus, The Seasons represents the culmination of

Haydn’s long and illustrious career. The 110-voice

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart — Great Mass in C minor, K. 427 Vesperae Solennes de Confessore, K. 165The 110-voice MARIN ORATORIO presents an

all-Mozart concert, featuring sacred choral works

from his late Salzburg period. This was when

Mozart changed the face of church music with his

The featured work, the Great Mass in C minor,

K. 427, is the most expansive and varied of all of

his liturgical settings. The program opens with

icCLASS RECITALS 2017

Avowal – Singer’s Choice RecitalThe advanced voice class begins each semester by revisiting songs chosen from classic vocal literature. You will hear art songs and arias of composers such as Bach, Mozart and Fauré, as well as musical theatre pieces from the classical repertoire. This is our affirmation of talent and claim to progress forward.

September 27, 2017 – 11:10 am Lefort Recital Hall / PA72, Performing Arts Building

Frage und Antwort – Art Songs of Joseph MarxContinuing the tradition of Lied, Joseph Marx (1882-1964) was considered by many to be the successor of Hugo Wolf. His songs have broad melodic lines and thick accompaniment textures, full of the high romanticism and sensuality that was popular in Vienna in the early 20th century. As a scholar and critic, he coined the term “atonality” even as he eschewed its practice in his own compositions.

November 1, 2017 – 11:10 am Lefort Recital Hall / PA72, Performing Arts Building

Feast of Pleasure – Songs of JoyIn this holiday season surrounded by the artifice of joy, we bring songs that represent our own true joyful sensibilities – whether it be celebrating food, family, connection, spirituality, quietness, or bawdiness! Join us for a gleeful view of life, in all its many facets!

Incitement! First Open RecitalYou may have read that as “excitement,” which is also very present at the first public recital of our newly minted singers. The definition for incitement reads “to stir, encourage, or urge on,” which is exactly how we encourage you to participate. Come share the thrill of accomplishment and joy as our new singers offer their first public performance!

The singers delve deeper into their performance of art songs and arias (Brahms, Fauré, Copland, and the like), as well as music theatre from the Great American Songbook.

February 28, 2018 – 11:10 am Lefort Recital Hall / PA72, Performing Arts Building

Evidence of Things Not Seen – Art Songs of Ned RoremContemporary composer Ned Rorem is typically likened to an American Schubert (living in Paris) for the fecundity, emotional range, and quality of his songs. He is one of America's most honored composers (a Pulitzer, Grammy, and ASCAP’s Lifetime Achievement are among his awards). His songs are pithy and profound, with an elusive sparkle and subtle play of shadows that woo the audience to listen more intently.

April 9, 2018 – 11:10 am Lefort Recital Hall / PA72, Performing Arts Building

Cybele – Mother GoddessCybele is an ancient Greek mother goddess. Athens evoked her as a protector, but her most celebrated Greek rites and processions show her as an exotic mystery-goddess who arrives in a lion-drawn chariot to the accompaniment of wild music, wine, and a disorderly, ecstatic following.

Jubilee, the Triumph of Freeing Spirit - First Open RecitalIt takes real courage to walk into a Beginning Voice Class, and even more to master the hard work throughout the semester. The benefits are more than just musical, however, as these students can attest. They have succeeded and are eager to share their accomplishments with you! You will hear an engaging combination of folk songs and art songs, musical theatre, and perhaps even a short aria.

Based at the College of Marin Kentfield Campus but performing throughout the county, the 5th annual Music from Marin Summer Festival presents two chamber concerts with a Viennese flavor, and the American premiere of Gomorra, a musical spectacle in one act for singers, eight instruments, and chorus by the living Viennese composer HK Gruber.

presenting the greatest music you’ve never heard!

Performed only once in his native city, this overlooked masterpiece contains some of the most achingly beautiful music composed in the second half of the 20th century.

The first of the two chamber concerts features works for piano and string quintet, including Beethoven’s Piano Concerto no. 5 (“Emperor”), and the world premiere of Music for Idiots by internationally renowned percussionist (and College of Marin alum) Terry Bozzio. The second chamber concert explores the many facets of Viennese art music from 1918 to the present. Works by Schoenberg, Korngold, Webern, Lehar, Cerha, Gruber, and others.

Each program lasts approximately 75 minutes. Free admission and parking.

The COM Fine Arts Gallery supports

Art Department curriculum through

exhibitions of emerging and established

artists who hold a strong vision, engage

in a critical dialogue, and are globally

relevant. The study and experience

of art provide exceptional learning

opportunities for students and the

greater Marin County community.

Access to the gallery and these

programs places a focus on fine

arts education and unique learning

experiences. The Fine Arts Gallery

serves as a classroom, providing COM

students hands-on involvement and

job training in the fields of exhibition

installation and gallery management.

The Fine Arts Gallery hosts five to six

exhibits each academic year, beginning

with the faculty exhibit in fall and

culminating with the annual juried

student show in spring. The Fine Arts

Gallery does not accept unsolicited

exhibition proposals; however, all

students have the opportunity to enter

their work to be considered for inclusion

in the student exhibition.

Marin Collects showcases significant art and

design from the private collections of Marin

County residents. The inaugural exhibit of

Marin Collects, opening in spring 2018,

will feature works on loan from the Blunk

Foundation, the Parker family, and the Cella

family. Marin Collects is intended to celebrate

the passion that moves people to acquire art

that evokes and stirs something within them.

Marin Collects brings unique pieces together

in support of sharing an appreciation of the

arts in our community.

Made in Marin presents local makers—

designers and manufacturers, artists

and craftspeople—based in Marin. This

reoccurring exhibit highlights the work

of emerging makers who live and work

in our community. Made in Marin lauds

the county’s heritage of creative artisans

and the beauty of the work made by our

neighbors. The first Made in Marin exhibit

opens in fall 2018 and will feature the

works of Ido Yoshimoto and Grayson Kent.

Supporting COM’s Fine Arts Gallery and program helps ensure that students and the greater community have an enduring, meaningful, and creative means of learning, exploring, questioning, and engaging with the world of fine arts.
