Southeast Family, Everywhere we go we cross paths with people who need Jesus. From our town, to our state, to our nation, and to the world people need the Lord. While there are places, like Muskogee, where there are lots of churches and relatively easy access to the gospel message, not every place is so fortunate. There are many places within our own nation that have no Christian heritage, limited access to the gospel, and not enough churches to reach the millions of people who are in need of salvation found only in Jesus. One such place is Phoenix, Arizona. At the invitation of the North American Mission Board missionary that serves both Phoenix and Tucson, I spent a few days in Phoenix seeing the work that God is doing and the great need for more laborers to go into the harvest. Phoenix is now the 5 th largest city in the United States, but there is no Christian heritage there and very little Christian witness. There are over 4.2 million people that live in and around Phoenix with 9 out of 10 of them being spiritually lost. Did you catch that? 90% of 4.2 million people are lost and will spend eternity in hell if they don’t hear the gospel and trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. That is astounding and heartbreaking all at the same time, and it is right here in America. Because they have no Christian heritage, Phoenix is the 6 th most biblically illiterate city in the U.S. That means many do not know even simple Bible stories you and I might have known for years; stories like David and Goliath, the story of Daniel, or the Good Samaritan. Almost seems hard to believe, doesn’t it? But it is a sad reality. You can’t hardly drive down a street in an Oklahoma town and not see a Southern Baptist Church. That is not the case in Phoenix. There is one Southern Baptist Church for every 19,000 people and with a population net growth of 220 people a day the disparity between churches and people is getting further apart. To put this in context, in Mississippi there is one SBC for every 222 people. I share all of these statistics with you so you can have a clear perspective of the need for churches to be planted and the gospel message to be taken to our neighbors, our nation, and the nations of the world. The fields truly are white unto harvest. Will you join me in praying for Phoenix? Praying for God to call men to go and plant churches in this city? Pray for churches that are being planted now to reach people with the gospel, the make disciples, to be missionaries where they live, and to have the funding they need to have a church and to do ministry? Will you pray for people to be receptive to the gospel and to place their faith in Jesus? Will you pray for Dewayne Hawkins, Luke Panter, Bryson Isom, and Jeremiah Semmler, and their families? These men and their families are church planters whom we spent time with to see what God is doing in their respective areas. The need is massive, but our God is able! Let’s do all we can, whatever it takes, to get the gospel as far as possible, to as many people as possible, in our lifetimes. Deacon Body Meeting Sunday, November 5 th at 5pm. Southeast Family,

In recent years movies based on stories from war have been box office sensations. Movies like Saving Private Ryan, American Sniper, and most recently Hacksaw Ridge have garnered great interest from the American people. Why is there such fascination with these movies? Because we love heroes! They inspire us. We love to recount their stories and see their courage and acts of heroism. We love to revel in victory over insurmountable odds. Heroes are not just the one’s they make movies about. In my opinion, every man and woman that has served America and her people through one of the branches of the military is a hero. Our veterans have supplied us with freedom to enjoy many things that without their commitment and sacrifice we would not experience. As someone wrote: “It is the VETERAN, not the preacher that has given us freedom of religion. It is the VETERAN, not the reporter who has given us freedom of the press. It is the VETERAN, not the poet who has given us freedom of speech. It is the VETERAN, not the campus organizer who has given us freedom to assemble. It is the VETERAN, not the lawyer who has given us the right to a fair trial. It is the VETERAN, not the politician that has given us the right to vote.” I would add to this given current events in our culture, “It is the VETERAN, not the athlete who has given us the freedom to play a game, earn a living, and gain the admiration of a large group of fans.” Suffice it to say, we all owe a huge debt of gratitude to all the VETERANS who have served this country. We are the land of the free because of the brave. We are blessed at SEBC to have a large number of VETERANS who have served, and may each VETERAN be assured that your church family will forever be indebted to the service you’ve rendered and the sacrifices that you’ve made to enable us to enjoy the freedoms in this great land. So, from the very bottom of our hearts, the SEBC family would like to extend our deepest thanks to every VETERAN and their family. We couldn’t be more thankful for you!

Southeast Family, Contrary to what some think, Americans did not originate the idea of Thanksgiving. Harvest festivals have been around in various countries for centuries. Many school children know about the Plymouth colonists and the first Thanksgiving. Few know that in 1621 the first governor, William Bradford, decreed there to be a three-day harvest feast with the Wampanoag people who helped the colonists survive the winter of 1620. The pilgrims did not hold a true Thanksgiving until 1623 following a drought, prayers for rain, and a subsequent rain shower. The path from Governor Bradford and the colonists to Thanksgiving Day would later be followed by proclamations for days of Thanksgiving by the Continental Congress, George Washington, John Adams, and James Madison. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be celebrated on the last Thursday of November. In 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared Thanksgiving to be the next to last Thursday in November to help the depressed economy by giving a longer Christmas shopping season. In 1941, Congress established that Thanksgiving would occur annually on the fourth Thursday of November. The Thanksgiving holiday has been a valuable part of our nation’s history. Today, Thanksgiving is more of a market for the beginning of Christmas shopping. Thanksgiving has become a speed bump on the way to Christmas. Could it be that a primary reason Thanksgiving is diminishing in significance in American culture is because gratitude is becoming less common? With an upswing in spirits of entitlement and materialism it is rare to find thankfulness, yet we find in Scripture that God desires His followers to have a spirit of thankfulness, or gratitude. I encourage you to take time each day around your personal time with the Lord to identify some of the things you are thankful for. God has been good to each of us and we all have many, many things for which to be grateful. Satan would love nothing more than to get us focused on difficulties, hardships, injustices, and all the ways that other people seem to have it better than we do. God, on the other hand, desires we have a spirit of gratitude. Would you make it a part of your prayer time that God would cultivate in you a spirit of gratitude? Also, I encourage you to join us this Sunday morning in worship at 10:30 a.m. as we see some of the benefits of a spirit of gratitude.

Southeast Family,

The hymn writer penned the words: When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed; When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost; Count your many blessings name them one by one, And it will surprise you what the Lord has done. Though written in old English we still get the point. Life is tumultuous, with lots of ups and downs. Often, however, we lose sight of the ups and choose only to think of the downs. We get discouraged with how things don’t turn out the way we’d hoped they would. Poor health, difficult circumstances, strained relationships, limited financial means, and countless other things contribute to our discouragement, and before we know it, our discouragement can turn into hopelessness. As the hymn writer said, we can start to think that “all is lost.” Before you give in to discouragement and hopelessness, take some time to count your many blessings. Follow the advice of the song writer and “name them one by one.” Take out a piece of paper or sit in front of your computer and begin to list all the blessings you’ve been given. Are you saved? If so, there is a blessing that belongs right at the top of the list. Jesus died for you and rose again so you could be forgiven of your sin, have a personal relationship with Him, and eternal life in heaven. If we name our blessings one by one, that is six right there and we are just getting started. The fact that you have life is a blessing from God given to you as a gift. Do you have loved ones, friends in your life? Name them one by one and thank God for the blessing of having them in your life. Are you able to see, to hear, to think, to speak, to care for yourself? All of these are gifts from God that we can be thankful for. The food on our tables, the clothes on our bodies, the shoes on our feet, the bed we have to sleep in, the warm water we have to shower or bathe in, the clean water we have to drink are all things we often take for granted but are reasons to be thankful. You have a church family, Christian brothers and sisters who are here to encourage you, help you as they can, and who want God’s best for you. Our thankful list, your thankful list, can get pretty long, and before we know it we’ve identified many reasons to be thankful, not just on Thanksgiving Day but every day. We can choose to either complain about our difficulties or to be grateful for our blessings. Life is hard; no secret there. But when we stop and really think about all the good things we enjoy in this life, we discover many reasons to be thankful. So, if you’re struggling with thankfulness, with having a spirit of gratitude, write out your thankful list and put it in a place you’ll see it every day and remind yourself of all the reasons you have to have a grateful spirit. If you don’t want to make a list, take a few minutes each day and consider 3 to 5 different things you are thankful for and it will help you to maintain a grateful spirit.
