Uterine artery most commonly affected area

Uterine tear can be anywhere along the uterine aretery

60% of ruptures within 20cm of artery origin

Symptoms

Typically occurs in older mares

Progressing restlessness,colic-like symptoms,

other signs of pain

Pale mucus membranes and showing signs of

shock

Abdomen containing mass amounts of blood

and blood clots

23% show no symptoms before death

Internal organs are pale

Past Health History

59% were barren within the past

year

Most mares hada mean foaling

history of 7 foals

14% had a history of Dystocia

Ruptures caused more because of

arterial weakeningand not trauma

from foaling
