tition and the GSK article contest. Also, look out for familiar fac-
es in the photos we have included.
Have a wonderful Easter break!
Bollywood Brass Band
On Wednesday 19th March , a musical group called the Bollywood Brass Band visited out school. They showed us
the various instruments they play and performed several songs for us. Some instruments we were introduced to
included: soprano saxophone, trumpet and tuba. When all the instruments were played in unison they sounded
amazing. One song was recognised by most, it was Jai Ho from the renowned film Slumdog Millionaire. At this
point the atmosphere was electric. The band included a glamorous, talented dancer called Sita. She taught us
some unique and stylish moves and even managed to get Mr Barnsley to join her on stage! We also watched
some entertaining video clips from Bollywood movies whilst the band played their fantastic music. What a treat!
Astro Turf! In recent weeks, our 3G all weather astro-turf pitch opened for the first time!
We have all very much enjoyed playing on it during our P.E lessons and on spe-
cial occasions, such as enterprise days. It gives us the opportunity to play sports
to a very high standard and develop our technical ability.
“The Astro turf is so cool. I wish my primary school had one!” - Kayelle 7R
Spaghetti Bridges
At last, our brand new Science labs have been opened; we are now able to do lots of fascinating experiments during our Science lessons. The classrooms are very spacious and full of equipment such as Bunsen Burners, fume cupboards, evaporating basins and test tubes.
We have all had a test on lighting a Bunsen Burner; everyone felt very anxious, but in the end did tremendously well! Almost everyone earned their purple Bunsen Burner License. Well done year seven!
In our Science elective, we will be learning about how to create dyes and colour using all types of mystifying chemicals. We will also be looking at William Perkin in
detail and, in the end, we will be creating our own colourful flags using dyes in one of our ten Science labs.
This term we will be learning all about the wonders of space in our exquisite Science labs. Remember your lab safety rules!
A few words from Mr Miall: “I feel very, very excited about our new Science labs and I know we will be doing lots of amazing experiments this term.”
Hello Superb Science Labs!
On Friday 21st March, for Science Week, William Perkin had their first science inter-form! 4-5 competitors from each form worked their socks off to construct a sturdy bridge made out of spa-ghetti! The rules were that you were only allowed to use one inch of Sellotape strips and the bridge had to be at least 20cm in span. It was an intense evening and everybody sat, nerve wracked, in the performance centre. Mr Miall and Miss Pompillio stood at the front with the bridges ready whilst the Science reps from each form talked briefly about the bridges. Then, it all began! Mr Miall placed different masses on the bridges and tested their strength! At first, everybody had doubts about Rutherford’s bridge, claiming that they had just wrapped it around in Sellotape. However, Mr Barnsley inspected it and con-firmed that it was not to be disqualified. The final was be-tween Kelvin and Rutherford. At first, Rory from 7K stood on Kelvin’s bridge and it got annihilated! Next he stood on Rutherford’s and it managed to survive! Then, Mr Salt-er stood on the bridge. It was instantly destroyed! Con-gratulations to 7Rutherford, our top bridge engineers!
28th February 2014 saw William Perkin’s second Enterprise day, this time the
form was Newton and the charity was Kids Company. Every teacher was
dressed as a superhero and the students wore capes. The reason for this is
that children enjoy superheroes and the charity is for children. Mr. Martin
was Captain Britain (but by the end of the day had changed his name to
Captain Cockney), Miss Neelands was Catwoman, Mr. Barnsley was the
Joker, Mrs. McEwen was also Catwoman, Mr. Miall was Batman, Mr. Salter
was also Batman, Mr. McDonald was Wolverine, Miss Reid was Storm from
the X-men and Mr. Bedford was Superman. They looked fantastic.
There was a pick and mix, face painting, apple bobbing, musical super-
heroes and a raffle draw at break/lunch. The pick and mix was such a
success that it sold out by lunch. The raffle draw was to choose who
would get to pour water over Mr. Barnsley! Pawal and Zoe won the
draw and soaked him outside (in the cold wind) after school. Mr. Bed-
ford challenged students to beat him at ping pong. He promised to
donate £50 if he lost (unfortunately, no one managed to beat him)!
Newton managed to raise £272.86—well done!
We had our third successful enterprise day on Friday 14th
March. It was organised by Isambard House, who were raising
money for a charity called Tearfund. On the day, students
and staff wore hats and ridiculous wigs. At break and lunch,
there were several events such as a cake sale, entry to the
Astro Turf and the most popular event, ‘Sponge Mr Salter!’
The sponging event raised the most money, particularly be-
cause it was very
amusing to see
Mr Salter being
soaked! After school,
several students
volunteered to wash
teachers’ filthy cars. The
most revolting of these
cars belonged to Miss
Reid’s and Mr McKee’s
van! All in all, it was an
enjoyable and very successful day which raised £526.61 for Tearfund
Congratulations Isambard!
Enterprise Days!
William Perkin’s Got Talent Auditions! It all started sensationally, everyone was blown away by the talented entries. Emilija was up second, singing a
very emotional and Breath taking song, Love is on the Radio. She was followed by Dimitra, who danced elegantly
to Pusher Love Girl. April and Lina performed the cup song; they were a fantastic duet. Ajani blew us away with a
hilarious impression of Simon Cowell. Well done to the other, equally entertaining, acts we saw (unfortunately,
we don’t have the space to mention them all). Everyone is waiting in anticipation for the show!
A Special Visit
The Planetarium
On Friday 7th March 2014, we were lucky enough to have a science show performed to us by a company called
Glaxo Smith Kline. GSK make drugs and chemicals to help keep people healthy.
The entertaining show taught us different things about our brains, heart, lungs and exercise. We discovered that
our heart pumps oxygen around our bodies and that it pumps 7,000l of blood around our bodies every day. One of
the GSK members (Sanjay) rode an exercise bike to show us how our hearts pump harder when we work out. In
addition, we found out that our lungs breathe in 11,000l of oxygen every day. We also took part in a memory test;
this gave us some idea of how our brains work.
I most enjoyed passing the “Oxygen Molecules.” It was fun to pass it up and
down and it also helped me to learn how oxygen is passed around the body.
Thank you Mr Miall for organising this spectacular show and thank you to the
wonderful GSK for putting on an enjoyable yet educational show!

Ash Wednesday Communion William Perkin students attended their second communion to mark the
beginning of Lent. All students reflected to identify something about
themselves that they wanted to change for the better, or let go of. To
symbolise this, all staff and students took part in washing their hands as part
of the ceremony. The service was
very calming and we were all able to
get involved by either sharing in the
Holy Communion, receiving a blessing
or writing our thoughts on an offering
card. Everyone was given a chocolate egg to signify new birth and new
beginnings. Thank you to Father John for making us all feel included and
giving us the opportunity to have a fresh start.
On the 14th March, Mr Isaac Maurice visited our school with an amazing
planetarium. It showed us our solar system, stars, the moon
and black holes in detail. It also showed us our closest galaxy,
Andromeda, and a few constellations. As well as that, we
looked at Jupiter and Saturn and their moons. Another thing
that was shown to us in the Planetarium was Betel-
geuse, one of the brightest stars in the Milky Way. It
was a thrilling, educational experience that none of us
had had before; we would like to thank Mr Miall for
organising it!
Theatre Trips!
Two theatre trips took place in February. One group of students went to
see War Horse and the other Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Each
group saw the play they had studied in Drama during the Autumn Term.
Both performances took place in Convent Garden, this gave us the
opportunity to explore a little of London. In particular, we enjoyed seeing
live performances in the market square, such as magic tricks that Miss
Neelands was involved in and people singing! The two theatre
performances were very different but equally amazing. War Horse was a
heart wrenching drama about how war creates separation between loved
ones. It was incredible to see how they created such realistic mechanical horses on stage. The performance was so
moving that we caught Mr Martin crying four times! Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was a rollercoaster ride of
colour, chocolate and singing.
The sets were particularly
impressive; the students
were blown away! Thank you
Mr Barnsley for organising
our first school trips into
London!
Engaging With the Wider World On Thursday 27th February we went to an important meeting in Ealing Broadway to discuss issues within our
community. There were 71 people present at this meeting. After listening to thought provoking points of view,
we voted for the most important issues facing residents of Ealing at the moment. In first place was social care
(37 votes). Homelessness was in second place (26 points). In third place was disability access (21 points). Buses
were in fourth place (13 points). The high streets came last, with just 5 votes. The meeting was a brilliant op-
portunity to engage with our community and have a say in the development of our local area. Father John
summarised our findings in an email and sent it to the government. We can’t wait for our next meeting.
Isambard Win!
Seven Isambard are the winners of
this half term’s inter-form football
