Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the latest in research breakthroughs and treatments for major diseases, including cancer and heart disease, in the Perkins innovative and cutting edge facilities. With awards for its impressive architectural design, the Perkins building has seen major discoveries in the fight against cancer, diabetes and neuromuscular diseases take place inside its very own walls. A recent achievement saw the Perkins launch a biomedical engineering program in conjunction with The University of Western Australia, which merges the fields of medicine, science and engineering together to deliver innovative medical solutions for patients. Visitors will have an opportunity to unleash their inner scientist and learn more about what some of WA’s brightest minds are doing to improve the health of the community. Get a behind-the-scenes look through the Perkins laboratories where researchers work as meticulous pioneers investigating innovative solutions to tackle illness and disease. Perkins laboratories carry strict regulations, so visitors are advised to wear closed-in shoes if they would like to enter the labs and see the high-tech equipment and research workspace up close. The foyer features 4m-high LED screens showing fluorescent cell images and huge male and female MRI images with accompanying monitors that focus on research being conducted in the building. Other displays explore historical highlights in medical research, interactive touch screens and an original sample of mould used by Alexander Fleming to grow penicillin, signed by the revolutionary scientist himself. There will be something for everyone, with hands-on activities taking place in the research-grade teaching laboratory, the Lotterywest BioDiscovery Centre. Plenty of food and coffee options will be available from 9.30am to 3.30pm at the award-winning Coffee Anatomy cafe situated on the ground floor of the Perkins building.
