InTRoduCTIonAluminiumisalonglasting,durable,lightweightalternativetoothercladding materials.

Aluminium provides high thermal insulation and minimal maintenance to remain corrosion-free.

Itiseasiertotransportanderectbecauseitissignificantlylighterthanmany alternate cladding materials.

This book is a guide to the installation of aluminium roofing and wallingmanufacturedbyPermalite. We intend that it be used by all tradesandprofessionsinvolvedwithspecifyingandapplyingtherange of our products. Referencetothismanualwillallowyoutomaximisethebenefitsofaluminiuminyournextproject.

WereferonlytogenuinePermalite®aluminiumroofingandwallingmanufactured by us and marketed under our brand names. Our recommendations should only be used for our products because they are based on comprehensive testing of our profiles, base-metal-thicknesses(BMT)andmaterialfinishes.

Our products are engineered to perform according to our specifications only if they are used in the appropriate conditions and installed to the recommendations in this manual and our other publications.

Wherewerecommenduseofthirdpartymaterials,ensureyoucheckthequalitiesandcapabilitiesofthoseproductswiththerelevantmanufacturer before use.

Walls When you design Permalite® aluminium cladding into your building youhavearangeofprofilesfromwhichtochoose.Whilstcladdingobviouslyneedstokeepouttheweather,italsohassignificanteffectson the looks, cost and durability of a building.

RoofsThere are many factors in designing roofs including:

• theshape:istherooftobe‘flat’orpitched or curved?

• thesupportingstructureandsupportspacing;

• thewindforcesthattheroofmustsustain;

• thepitchwhichaffectsthelooks,theprofile’sabilitytoefficientlycarryraintothegutters,andfixingdetails;

• thermalexpansionoflongsheets(Section1.6);

• theattributesofothermaterialsusedintheroofdesign.

Thisbookdoesn’tattempttocoverthestructuraldesigndetailsofsupports or aesthetics: there are many other texts and Australian Standards that cover these areas.

This Manual provides tables of load capacities, and the maximum roof length for pitch and rainfall intensity for Permalite® aluminium roofing products.

Theappropriatedesignwilldependonyourparticularneedsandcircumstances. You should get advice from the relevant specialists whererequired.

ECo-FRIEndLy & RECyCLAbLEChoosingtheoptimummaterialforyournextprojectshouldtakeaccountofthefulllifetimeofthematerial.Thiswillincludeconstruction,use,maintenanceanddisposal.Materialswhichcanberecycledeasilyandeconomicallyandwhichdonotrequirelandfilldisposal should be preferred.

Aluminium’sformability,highstrength-to-weightratio,corrosionresistance,andeaseofrecyclingmakesittheidealmaterialforawiderangeofbuildingapplications.Itisalmostuniquelysuitedforprojectsin harsh industrial and marine environments.

Benefitsdurability: TheoutstandingbenefitofPermalite®AluminiumRoofingProductsis their long-term durability in aggressive environments. Permalite® roofs have been installed in Australia since the 1960s. Thermal efficiency: Unpaintedaluminiumcanreduceheattransmissionbyupto9.5ºCduetoitshighthermalinsulationproperties.Thisissignificantinreducing the ever-increasing operating cost of air conditioning.

Weight: The lighter mass of aluminium may provide a reduction of the cost of transport to remote locations.

1.0 MATERIALs1.1 TEsTInG sTAndARdsAS1562.1:1992specifiesthedesignandinstallationofsheetmetalroofandwallcladding.OurPermalite®profilessatisfyallthe requirements of this Standard, including the ability of the roof towithstandconcentratedloadsaccordingtoAS4040.1andwindpressure in non-cyclonic regions according to AS 4040.2.

note on testing for cyclonic areasTheBuildingCodeofAustralia(BCA)currentlyrequiresallmetalroof claddings, its connections and immediate supporting members towithstandalow-high-low(LHL)pressuresequence.Permalite® aluminiumcladdingsaresubjectedtocyclonicconditions,accordingtotheBCAdefinition,andassuch,mustbetestedusingtheLHLcyclonic testing methodology to determine their capacity.Jame’sCookUniversity‘sCycloneTestingStationhasperformedcomprehensivesimulatedwindloadingpressuretestsoftheentirerange of Permalite® aluminium claddings fastened to 1.9mm BMT G450steelpurlinsforthemostaccurateresults.ThesetestswereconductedonadirectairpressurerigintheUniversity‘sCycloneTesting Station laboratory.

1.2 WInd FoRCEs on RooFs

Winds create considerable forces on both the topside and the underside of roof cladding, and you must consider these forces in the design and fixing of any roof. The forces are:

• inward forces tendingtocollapsetheroofcladdinginwards,causedbywindactingdirectlyonthewindwardside;and

• outward forces tending to lift the roof cladding from its framing, and theentireroofstructurefromtherestofthebuilding.Outwardforcescanbecausedbothbyupliftfromnegativewindpressures,outsidethebuilding;andbypositivewindpressureinsidethebuilding.

Generallythegreatestwindforcesimposedonroofsareduetotheoutwardforces.Becausethedeadweightofroofingmaterialsisrelativelysmall,theoutwardforcesmustberesistedbytherooffasteners.

It is very important that the battens and roof framing are adequately fixedtotheraftersandwalls,andthatunderextremeconditionsthewallframing is anchored to the footings. Special anchoring provisions may apply in cyclonic areas. Specialist advice should be sought in these circumstances.

1.3 MATERIALs And FInIshEsAllPermalite®aluminiumroofingprofilesandflashingsareproducedfrom marine grade aluminium alloy entirely. No coatings or claddings arerequiredtoenhanceperformanceoreconomy;youdon’thaveto consider coating thickness. Due to this Permalite aluminium sheetingisdeemedtocomplywithTable3.5.1aAcceptableCorrosionProtectionforSheetRoofingunderNote6oftheBuildingCodeofAustralia.

The quality of the paint systems used on Permalite® aluminium roofingproducts(ReferSection2.2)isanadditionalbonustothedurability of the sheet itself.

LT7, Alspan, Waveline and V-Rib are manufactured entirely from aluminiumalloy5251or5052producedbyPermalite®toAS/NZS1734:1997

Alloy5251/5052arehighstrengthmarinegradealloyswithexceptional resistance to corrosion in marine or industrial environments.

Theprofilesareavailableinthreefinishes:

Mill Finish–anunpaintedsmoothlustrousfinishwhichwilldullrelatively quickly and enhances corrosion resistance.

stucco Finish–stuccoembossedmillfinish,whichreducesthespecularreflectanceofmillfinishsheet.

Painted Finish–arangeofqualitypaintedfinishes(Section2.2)areavailable.

1.5 QuALITy AssuRAnCEThein-linepaintingandrollformingofPermalite®aluminiumroofingandwallingproductsareconductedinAustraliainaccordancewithBlueScope’sstrictqualitycontrolguidelines.Permalite®holdsQualityCertificationtoAS/NZS9001:2008.

1.6 ThERMAL ExPAnsIonAlthoughaluminiumhastwicethecoefficientofexpansionofsteel,(24x10-6 compared to 12 x 10-6ºC) the effect of this is often over estimated.

Usuallyaluminiumcladdingisfixedtoasteelstructure,which,underthesamethermalinfluence,expandsorcontractsalso.

Thecombinationofthesefactorsresultsinalowrelativeexpansionbetweenthealuminiumcladdingandthesteelstructure.Ithasbeenobserved in practice that the theoretical expansion of an aluminium roof,relativetothesteelstructureonwhichitisfixed,isreducedbyupto50%.

NOTE:Asanapproximation,aluminiumexpands1.2mm/mover50°temperature change.

1.8 CoMbusTIbILITyPermalitealuminiumcladdingshavebeentestedtoAS1530.31999withthefollowingcombustibilityresults:Ignitability Index: 0Spread of Flame Index: 0HeatEvolvedIndex: 0Smoke Developed Index: 2Andassuch,complieswithclauseC1.12oftheBuildingCodeofAustralia as a non-combustible material.Referto9.0CertificationofNon-Combustibility.

1.9 EnvIRonMEnTAL CondITIonsAluminium products are generally specified for severe environmental conditions including industrial, agricultural, marine, intensive animal farming,swimmingpoolsorotheraggressiveconditions.Togetthebest performance from our products in these conditions, or other unusually corrosive environments, seek advice from our technical representatives.

1.10 sToRAGE & hAndLInG PRIoR To usE Aluminiumroofingrequirescareduringhandlingandinstallation.Installation damage can be avoided by taking reasonable care and followingtherecommendationsofthismanual.

Keep the product dry and clear of the ground. If stacked or bundled productbecomeswet,separateit,wipeitwithacleanclothandstackit to dry thoroughly.

Productthathasbecomewetintransportistobeunpackedimmediately and each section dried thoroughly prior to repacking. Bundled sections and accessories should not be left exposed in theopenforanyperiodaswaterstainingmayresultbetweenanyaluminiumsurfacesincontactwitheachother.Millfinishaluminiumisparticularly susceptible to this type of staining.

Contactwithmoisture,cementdust,limeorabrasivedustistobe avoided. If not required for immediate use, sections should be neatly stacked off the ground, covered and on a slight slope so that watercandrainawayItshouldbenotedthatwhilstwaterstainingisunsightlyitwillnotaffectthestructuralintegrityordurabilityoftheproductinanyway.Packsofsheetstoredontheroofmustbeplacedover trusses or purlin supports.

1.7 ThERMAL PRoTECTIonThelowemissivityofunpaintedaluminiumroofinggreatlyreducesheatgaininabuildingwhereanairspaceisprovidedontheundersideoftheroof.Thefactorsofreflectivityandabsorptivityofunpaintedaluminiumarealsofavourable,particularlywhentheunderside of the roof is insulated.

Onpaintedroofs,theuseoflightcolourswillhelptoreducethethermal absorptivity of the paint coating.

1.11 LoAd CAPACITIEs

Themaximumrecommendedloadcapacitiesareshowninthefollowingpages.TheyarebasedonAS1562.1:1992Designandinstallationofsheetroofandwallcladding:Metal.

In all cases, cladding is fixed to a support of 1.9mm minimum base metalthickness(BMT)andminimumyieldstressofG550.Ifyouwanttousemetalbattensthinnerthan1.9mm,seekadvicefromourinformation line.

1.12 MAxIMuM LEnGThs oF RooFInG Thevalleys(orpans)ofroofinghavetocarrywatertothegutters.Ifinheavyrain,thevalleysoverfill,watercanflowintotheroofthroughthe side-laps and flashings.

Factorsaffectingwaterproofanddrainagecapacityofthelapsofaprofile include:

• thewidthanddepthofthevalleysorpans;• thepitchoftheroof—rainflowsfasteronasteeperpitch;• rainfallintensityforthegeographicalarea;• thelengthoftherooffromridgetogutter;and• penetrationsthatcausenearbyvalleystocarryextrarain

1.14 WALkInG on RooFsItisimportantthatyouwalkonroofingcarefully,toavoiddamagetoeithertheroofingoryourself.Generally,keepyourweightevenlydistributed over the soles of both feet to avoid concentrating your weightoneitherheelsortoes.Alwayswearsmoothsoft-soledshoes;avoidribbedsolesthatpickupandholdsmallstones,swarfandotherobjects.

Whenyouwalkacrosstheribs,walkoverorclosetotheroofingsupports.(Usuallyoverfastenerlocations.)Becarefulwhenmovingbetweensupports.Donotwalkinthepanimmediatelyadjacenttoflashingsortranslucentsheeting.Walkatleastonepanaway.

Itiswidelyusedforroofingandcanbereversedtoprovideaboldwalleffect.

2.1 sysTEM PRoFILEsPermalite® offers four different solutions to provide a range of stylish, economical and durable systems suitable for almost any cladding applications.

2.1.1Permalite v-Rib®

Thesymmetryand915mmcoverwidthofthisproductprovideexcep-tionaleconomythroughfasterfixingandminimumwastage.Thesefactorsareimportantonsmallerprojectsandcomplexroofandwallsorwhereastrikingdesignisrequired.

2.1.3 Permalite Waveline®

Thetraditionalcorrugatedstyleand990mmcoverwidthofthisproductprovidesminimumwastageandquickinstallation.Whetheryouwantatraditionalstyleorthemodernlook,theuniversalappeal of Waveline is the right choice.

2.1.2 PERMALITE ALsPAn®

Thisprofilewasdesignedspecificallytoprovideawidespanningcapabilityandadistinctiveappearance.Coverwidthis875mm.

Thelargerobustribsandexceptionalwatercarryingcapacityofthisprofilemakeitidealforlargehighperformanceroofssuchaspowerstationsandindustrialorcommercialbuildings.Theprofileisalsousedonwallswhereastrongvisualeffectisrequired.

2.2 PAInT sysTEMsPermalite® Roof and Wall Sheet may be supplied prepainted on one or both sides.

Aluminium provides an excellent painting base for paint systems. Before roll forming, the paint is applied to the coiled sheet by reverse roller coating and heat curing on paint lines employing the latest painting technology.

2.2.1 PolyestersThenewgenerationPolyesterpaintshaveoutstandingcolourandglossretentioncharacterisitcs.This,coupledwiththeirresistancetoscratchingduringtransportationandinstallation;makethesepaintssuitableforthemajorityofseveremarineandindustrialenvironments.PolyesterpaintsystemshavebeenextensivelytestedinAustralia’stough environment over many years. Colours available in store are:

2.2.2 FluorocarbonsIncertainapplicationsandcolours,fluorocarbonpaintsmayofferimproved colour and gloss retention levels over polyester paints. Howeverfluorocarbonpaintshavealowerscratchresistanceandas such are more susceptable to damage during transportation and installation. This needs to be considered against the additional cost of these paint systems. Ask our Permalite® technical team for advice regardingyourproject.

2.2.3 Colour RangeMost Standard COLORBOND® steel colours based on minimum order quantities of 3.0 tonne. Other colours avalable on application withminimumorderquantitiesandextentedleadtimes.

2.8 TIMbER And METAL CoMPATIbILITy Undernocircumstancesshouldgalvanisedsteel,ZINCALUME® steel,lead,copper,brass,orcopperalloysbeplacedincontactwithaluminium,norshouldyoupermitwaterrunofffromthesematerialstodischarge onto aluminium sheets.

Caremustbetakentoavoidcontactwithbuildingmaterialssuchasunseasoned or chemically treated timber, lime cement, concrete, mortar or plaster during construction and to provide impermeable barriers against long term contact.

In most situations the face of a dissimilar metal or timber support, againstwhichthesheetingisfastened,istobepaintedwithchromatebasedprimers/bituminouspaintorgoodquality(andappropriatewidth)adhesivePVCorpolyethylenetape.

Underseveremarineand/oraggressiveindustrialenvironmentsDenso tape or closed cell polyethylene tape should be used to completelyfillthesheet/structureinterfacetoavoidmoistureretentionbycapillaryaction.Permalite®willprovideadviceinsuchsituations.

2.10 ConvEx CuRvEd RooFInGInadditiontoaestheticappeal,curvedroofingavoidstherequirementforaridgecapflashing.Thisisabenefitonlowsloperidgedroofs.

Sheetmaybecurvedoverthefullwidthoftherooforcurvedonlyat the ridge. Curved sheet at the eaves may also form effective sun control, roof drainage or cyclonic security.

There are three methods of curving sheet:

1)Springcurving–Straightsheetisheldtotheroofcurvebythefixingscrews,allpurlinsmustbesetat90°tothearctangentandthereshouldbenocurvebetweentheeavepurlins.Endlapsmaybeusedon straight roof sections only.

2)Crimpcurved–Thisfactoryprocessformsacurvebycrimpingtheprofileatcontrolledintervalsprovidingastrikingvisualeffectanda small radius of curvature. Concave curves may also be supplied. Crimp curved ridge caps are recommended on the basis of their superiorstrengthandlowercostcomparedtotheridgecapflashingsystem.

3)Rollcurving-ThisfactoryprocessisonlysuitableforWaveline.

Sheetsinaspring-arched(convex)roofarecurvedinaradiusfromeave to eave. LT7, ALSPAN, V-RIB and WAVELINE can be spring-curvedforanarchedroof.Table2.12showstheacceptableradii.

Thetopfaceofallpurlinsmustaccuratelyfollowandbetangentialtothe radius of the arch. The radius of curvature can be calculated from the formula in Figure 2.9

2.12 CondEnsATIonCondensationoccursontheundersideofallmetalroofingwhentheroofmetaltemperaturefallsbelowthedewpointofhumidairheldagainst the underside of the roof.

Control of under roof condensation can be affected through the reduction of the moisture content of the air under the roof by one or moreofthefollowingprocedures.

a)Providingampleventilation,whichallowsairtomovethroughtheceiling space.

b)Usingceilingliningswithamoisturebarrierontheuppersurface.

c)Stretching50mminsulationblanket,withaluminiumfoillaminatedtotheunderside,overthepurlinsbeforelayingtheroof.Alljoinsintheblanket,andaroundpenetrations,shouldbesealedwithwaterproofadhesive tape.

Oftheaboveb)providesthebestceiling/roofcondensationcontrol.Althoughc)maybelesseffectiveincontrollingceilingcondensationitsignificantlyreducestheeffectofroofnoise.

Consideration should also be given to the effect of condensation on theundersideofexposedexteriorroofingsuchaseavesorawning.Theunsightlydiscolourationwhichcanoccurmaybeavoidedbyplacingaliningunderneathwitha100mmairgapbetweentheliningand the metal roof. Alternatively, painting the underside of the roof sheetingwillretarddiscolourationbutnotcondensation.

2.13 REvERsEd PRoFILEAvariationtotheappearanceofwallscanbemadebyfixingLT7orAlspanwiththepansouttherebycreatingaboldeffect.However,designcapacities,maybeadverselyaffected.

2.14 dEsIGn oF dRAInAGERoof drainage systems can be affected by a number of variables and must be designed and detailed by a suitable qualified trade or professional. The design of roof drainage aims to protect people, property and the building. The designed drainage system must be installed under the supervision of a qualified trade or professional. The steps of the design process are illustratedbelow.

2.17 RooF sLoPEsMinimum Onverylowslopescaremustbetakentoensurethatpurlinsagormisalignmentdoesnotresultinwaterpondingontheroof,particularlyif end laps are used.

Atlowslopes,sayaround1in50(1°)slope,allroofsupportsmustbein the one plane because slight variations can result in zero or negative fall. This may occur even after completion of the building as the result ofsettlement,timberwarpingorshrinking,orextraloadings(likeairconditioners).

Minimum recommended roof slopes are listed in this document. As a guide,whereverpossible,youshoulddesignforaminimumslopeof1in30(2°).Roofslopeslowerthantherecommendedminimummaybeavailablesubjecttoenquiryandwillbedependentupontheroofapplication and building details.

MaximumThehighdischargevelocityofrainwaterfromslopesover25°canresultinsidelapleakage.Wheretheslopeexceeds25°,acontinuousrun of silicone sealant is to be placed under the outer leg of the side lap during sheet installation.

Turning-up WavelineWithpliers,multi-gripsorashiftingspannercloseddowntoapproximately 2mm, grip the valley corrugations 20mm in from the end of the sheet and turn up as far as possible. Be careful not to tear the sheet.

2.15.1 box GuTTERsBox gutters should be fabricated from aluminium sheet preferably ofalloy5251or5052andofthenextstandardthicknesstothethickness of the roof i.e. 1.2mm thick box gutter for 0.9mm thick roof. The minimum aluminium thickness for box gutters is 0.90mm.Refer to Figure 2.11 for typical aluminium box gutter detail.

Box gutters must be adequately supported on sides and bottom inconsiderationoftheirfullwaterload,andthepossibilityofbeingusedasfootways.BoxguttersshouldbedesignedandinstalledinaccordancewithAS/NZS3500.3:2003,AS/NZS2179.1:1994,HB114:1998andtheBCA.Generally,thesidesshouldbesupportedbyframeworkorpurlins,ifnot,sidesshouldbestiffened.

Fasteningtheguttertotheframeworkorpurlinsshouldonlybedoneat the outlet end. The remainder of the gutter should be free to move.

Overflashingsarenottobefastenedtothegutterandsaddleflashingsbetweengutterendsaretobefastenedtoonegutteronly.Fixings,supportsandoutletsmustallowcompletefreedomforthermalmovementofthegutter.Thegutterasawholemustnotberestrainedinanyway.

Dropsumpsshouldbeprovidedatoutletstoincreasetheflowefficiencyfromguttertodownpipe.Sumpsshouldbeasquarebythewidthofthegutterandhaveadepthofnotlessthanonequarterofthegutterdepth.Overflowsshouldbeprovidedbyspoutsatthegutter ends or by secondary sump outlets.

Eaveandboxgutterjoinsmaybemadeusingsiliconesealantprovidedthejoinconsistsofoverlappingsurfacesseparatedbysiliconesealantandfastenedbytwolinesofstaggeredrivets.

Blindrivetsusedtojoinguttersectionsmustbeofaluminiumonly,theheads of the rivets should be on the outer surface.

AlternativelyjointsmaybemadebyTIGAluminiumwelding;solderingor brazing is not recommended.

2.16 TuRn uP RooF CLAddInGAtthehighendofroofing,windcandrivewateruphill,undertheflashing or capping, into a building. To minimise this problem, you turnupthevalleys(orpans)atthehighendofroofing. (Theprocessiscalledturning-up(orstop-ending).

Allroofingonslopesbelow1in2(25°)shouldbeturned-up.Duringthe turn-up operation, care should be exercised to prevent tearing or puncturing the steel sheets. You can turn-up sheets before or after they are fixed on the roof. If you do the latter, you must have sufficient clearance for the turn-up tool at the top end of the sheets (about50mm).

3.0 InsTALLATIon3.1 sAFETyItismostimportantforsafetyreasonsthatduringsheetlayingwalkingon the roof is reduced to an absolute minimum and along the purlins only. See Section 1.14 Walking on Roofs.

3.2 PREPARATIon Before commencing to lay the sheet, consideration should be given to theinstallationofgutterandeaveflashings,insulationandthelocationof roof penetrations such as vents, skylights etc.

A pencil of any colour may be used except black or so-called lead pencils.Don’tuseblackpencilstomarkroofingorwallingbecausethegraphitecontentcancreateanelectriccellwhenwetandthuscausedeteriorationofthefinish.Youcanalsouseastringlinewithchalk dust, or a fine, felt-tipped marker.

3.3 sQuAREnEss Checktherooforwallstructureforsquarenessbeforecommencingtolaysheet.Sheetmustbelaidsquaretotheridgewhereverpractical.Out-of-squarewhichexceeds100mmoverthesheetlengthshouldbe corrected by trimming the edge of the sheet laid against the out-of-square edge. Any sag of purlins should be corrected before commencement,particularlyonlow-pitchroofstoavoidwater“ponding”.

Ifinsulationistobelaidonwiremesh,themeshshouldbelaidfirst.Insulationshouldbelaidwiththeroofingtoavoidthepossibilityofrainwettingtheinsulation.

3.4 PuRLIn IsoLATIonIn most situations the face of a dissimilar metal or timber support, againstwhichthesheetingisfastened,istobepaintedwithchromatebasedprimers/bituminouspaintorgoodquality(andappropriatewidth)adhesivePVCorpolyethylenetape.

3.5 shEET InsTALLATIonCustomary practice is to lay out an area of sheet and secure each sheetwithacrestfasteneratthecentreoftheendsandmiddle,atthesametimecheckingtheprofiletoavoidprofilespread.Theareaofsheetlaidoutshouldbenomorethanthatwhichcanbefullyfixedwithinthedayoflaying.Whentheareaofsheethasbeenlaid,install side lap fasteners and then the balance of crest fasteners. See Sections3.15-3.18.

Wherever possible commence laying the sheet farthest from the expecteddirectionoftheheaviestrainorwindandfromtheeavetowardtheridge.

The top end of the sheet should be not more than 100mm from the ridgeorfascialineandthebottomendshouldextend50mmintothe gutter. The ridge and eave ends are to have the pans upturned anddownturnedrespectively.Endformingtoolsareavailableforthispurpose.Roofslopesgreaterthan25°requiresidelapsealing,withacontinuous run of silicone sealant.

3.6 shEET CuTTInGWherepossible,youshouldminimisesite-workbyusingsheetscuttolength in the factory. Aluminiumisbestcutwithawax-lubricatedfinetoothcircularsaw.

3.7 WALL CLAddInGWhereverpossible,commencefixingfarthestfromtheexpecteddirectionoftheheaviestwindorrain.Wheremorethanonelengthisusedforthewallheightanoverlapof100mmshouldbeallowedatagirtwiththeuppersheetoverlappingthelowerasforroofingendlaps.

Fornoncyclonicapplications,thesheetishardfixedtogirtsthroughthepannexttotheribusingthescrewsasnominatedinTable3.1.AdditionallyRA018StitchingscrewsorBulb-titerivetsarerequiredatlapribsforLT7andVRibprofilesatpurlinsandequalmidspanpointsbutnotexceeding500mmspacing.

Forcyclonicapplicationswallsheetingshallbeinstalledaspercyclonicroofsheeting(iewithwasherateachrib)

3.8 PosT PAInTInGManual post painting is generally not recommended. Where there is nootheroption,weadvisethefollowing:

Flashingswhicharetobepaintedbytheinstallershouldfirstbewashedwithhouseholddetergentanddried.Theflashingisthenpaintedwithanetchprimerandfinallybrushpaintedwiththecolourcoat.

Standardcoloursmaybeobtainedonenquirytomajorpaintmanufacturers.

Touch up of scratched to pre-painted sheet should be by brush only. Spray paints may fade prematurely.

3.9 TRAnsLuCEnT shEETInGTranslucentfibreglasssheetisavailableinthePermalite LT7®, Permalite Alspan®, Permalite Waveline® and Permalite V-Rib® profiles.

Therecommendationsforendlappingroofingsheetapplyalsototheplacement of translucent sheets into a roof.

BecauseofslightdifferencesinprofilealloverlappingsurfacesshouldhaveflexiblesiliconesealantorfoamtapeplacedbetweenthemandthesidelapsshouldbefastenedwithBulb-Tite® fasteners or similar at not more than 400mm centres. Fasteners must have a sealing washerunderthehead.Allribsattheendsofthesheeting,andalternateribsatintermediatepurlins,aretobefastenedwithcrestfastenersandwashers.Refertothemanufacturer’sinstructionsforfurther details.

3.10 sEALAnTsSiliconesealantsusedwithaluminiumsheetingmustbeneutralcure,howeverinsomeroofingapplicationsanon-curingsealantmayberequired.(PleaserefertoPermalite®foradvice.)Neutral-curesiliconesealants have good adhesion to the clean surface of all our roofing andwalling.Theyarewaterresistantandnon-corrosive; and areresistanttoextremesofheatandcoldwhileretaininggoodflexibility. In addition they are excellent gap fillers and provide high resistancetoultra-violetrays(sunlight)andhavealongservicelife.

3.14 FIxInGsPermalite®providesarangeoffixingscrewsandwasherstoprovideallaspectsoffixingtheroofingsheetandflashings.ThespecificationoffixingssuppliedbyPermalite®isaimedatmatchingthedurabilityoftheroofingsheet.Purchaseofinferioralternativesfromothersourcesshould be avoided.

3.14.1 Crest Fasteners – The Permalite® Positive Fix system providesfullsecurityagainstwindupliftandwaterpenetrationwhilstatthesametimeallowingmovementoftheroofsheetingandroofstructure due to thermal expansion or contraction.

3.14.2 valley Fasteners –usedmainlyforwallfixingtogirts,thestainlesssteelfastenerswithanaluminium/epdmbondedwasherarehardfixedintothegirts.(RefertoTable3.5FastenerSpecifications).

3.15 PIERCE-FIxEd RooF FIxInG The Permalite® Positive Fix System provides for thermal expansion oftheroofingsheetby“hard”fixingatthetopofthesheetslopewith“expansion”fixingbeingusedtoaccommodateexpansiontowardsthelowerendofthesheetslope.

Forbothtypesoffasteningthescrewshouldbescreweddownuntilitpressesonthewasherwithamediumpressure.Undernocircumstancesshouldthescrewbeovertightenedtothepointwheretheformedwasher,orthebondedwasherunderthescrewhead,commence to distort.

3.16 TyPEs oF PIERCEd FIxInGshard Fixing“Hard”fixingisusedwheresheetlengthsaresuchthatthermalexpan-sionisnotasignificantissueie9morless.(6mforwaterreserviors)Appropriate pilot holes are required to be drilled through the sheet and purlinwhencertainfastenersareused.RefertoTable3.2forpilotholerequirements and sizes.The hole in the Permalite sheeting should then beenlargedto6-6.5mmdiameterafterwhichthefastenerisinstalled.Inapplicationswhereselfdrillingscrewsareused,thena 6-6.5mmdiameterholeshouldbedrilledthroughthesheetpriortoinstallationofthefastener.(Figure3.4)Expansion fixing Forrooflengthsinexcessof9m,“Hard”fixingisusedforthefirst9mfromtheridgeorskillionhead.(Inwaterreserviors,thisdimensionisreducedto6m).Expansionfixingisusedfortheremainderofthesheetlengthandfollowsthesameprocedureashardfixingwiththeexceptionthat the hole in the rib crest is slotted after drilling the tapping hole, us-ingtoolRA165forLT7,AlspanandV-Ribprofiles.(Figure3.4)OnlargeprojectscontactyourPermalite®salesrepresentativeregardinguseofthistool(RA165).NotethatforexpansionfixingarubberwasherwithanelongatedholeandTeflonfacingononesideisused.ThiswashermustbeinstalledwiththeTeflonsidefacinguptowardtheheadofthescrew.Ensurethefastenerisinstalledinthecentreoftheslot.For Waveline, expansion is provided by drilling an 7mm hole in lieu of slots noted above.

3.17 End LAPsWhenendlapsareusedthelowersheetsarefixedfirst,withoutholes being drilled for fasteners to the purlin at the top of the sheet slope.Whenthenextsheetuptheroofslopeislaidthesheetisfirsttemporarilysecuredfromtheupperendtowardstolower.Wherethesheet overlaps the previously laid sheet, the end of the top sheet is liftedandtheribcrestslottedusingspecialslottingtoolRA165.Thetopsheetisloweredandapilotholedrilled,atthecentreofthetopsheetslot,throughthelowerribintothepurlinwiththefastenerthenbeinginstalled.Thismethodologyensuresthetopsheetisexpansionfixedandthelowersheetishardfixed.(Figure3.7)EndlapsforWavelinecanhave an 7mm pre-drilled hole through the crest of both sheets.

4.0 Flashings

4.1 Purpose of flashingThepurposeofaflashingistodivertwaterawayfromanypointofentry,andtomakeanybuildingweatherproof.Flashingsandcappingsarestripsofmetalformedtoweatherprooftheedgesofroofingandwalling. For the purposes of this chapter, only the term flashing is used. Thefollowingsectionsshouldbeconsideredasaguideonly. Foracomprehensiveaccountofflashingguidelines,refertoHB39-1997.Similar methods of flashing are used for different cladding-profiles. You can adapt the principles to suit your application. In all cases it is important to have ample cover provided by the flashing and proper turn-up of the cladding underneath.Becarefulwhenmovingbetweensupports.Donotwalkontheridgeimmediatelyadjacenttoflashingsortranslucentsheeting.Walkatleastonepanaway.Flashingsarenotonlyrequiredtoprovideweather-resistancethemanyjunctionsonarooforwallstructure,butarealsoaveryvisiblepartoftheroofandwallcladdingdesign,andperformanimportantroleintheaesthetic appearance of the building.Experienceisrequiredtodesign,cutandfastenflashingsthatwilllastthelifetimeoftherooforwallcladding,andspecialistassistanceshouldbesoughtwherethisexperienceisnotavailable.Allflashingsmustbedesignedtopreventpondingofwaterorbuild-upofdebris.Flashingsmustbedesignedtoprovideweather-resistancefortherooforwallcladdingwithoutrelianceonsealantastheprimemeansofprovidingweather-resistance.

4.2 Flashing Materials

It is very important that flashings be made from materials that are compatiblewiththecladding(ReferTables2.9and2.10).Leadflashingisnotrecommended,howeveritwillusuallyberetainedwhenre-roofing,becauseitisusuallycementedintothestructure.Inthese cases:

• thetopsurfaceoftheleadflashingmustbepaintedwithagoodqualityexteriorpaintsystem(tolimitcontaminationwithleadcompoundsinwaterrunningofftheflashing);and

• theremustbeabarrierbetweentheleadflashingandthecladding:eitheraplasticstrip(suchaspolythenedampcourse),orpaint.

FlashingsshouldconformtoAS/NZS2179.1:1994,andbecompatiblewiththecladding(ReferTables1.3and1.4).Materials for flashings are available in Mill or Painted finishes. 4.3 Roof Flashing For the purposes of this chapter, only the term flashing is used. Thefollowingsectionsshouldbeconsideredasaguideonly. Foracomprehensiveaccountofflashingguidelines,refertoAS/NZS3500.3:2003.

Similar methods of flashing are used for different cladding-profiles. You can adapt the principles to suit your application. In all cases it is important to have ample cover provided by the flashing and proper turn-up of the cladding underneath.

They shouldhaveanedgeturned-downtodipintothepanorvalley. The minimum recommended cover of longitudinal flashings over cladding shouldbetakenfromAS/NZS3500.3:2003.4.6 Transverse flashingsTransverse flashings run across the pans or valleys. They usually haveastiffeninglip,alongtheloweredge,whichisturned-downtodipintothepanorvalley.Tomaximiseweatherproofing,thebentlipis fashioned to fit the profile.Theturn-downfortransverseflashingsforWavelinecanbefashioned to fit the profile by either notching or scribing to match the corrugations, or lightly dressed into the valleys. 4.10 Flashing small roof penetrationsA flanged cylindrical sleeve is a fairly simple method of flashing around smallpenetrations(suchaspipepenetrations)whichfitbetweentheribs of a roof sheet, or penetrate only a single rib.The flange around the base of the sleeve can be contoured by hand to match the cladding profile before it is sealed and fixed to the cladding.Becarefulnottodamanyvalleysorpanssothatrainwatercandrainfreely from the high side of the roof penetration.

4.11 Flashing large roof penetrationsPenetrationsthroughribbedcladdingblockthevalleys(orpans),andthusaffectthefreeflowofrainwaterdownaroof.Allflashingshavetoweatherproofthecladding–butontheuphillsideoflargepenetrations,theyalsohavetochannelrainwatersidewaysintovalleys that run unobstructed to the eaves.

Four methods are described here. In all methods the ends of cut ribsmaybeclosedoffwithcapsontheoutsideoftherib,orwithplugsinsidetheribs.Plugsmustbeusedonside-lapstoallowtheanti-capillary cavity to drain.

support framingWherever more than one of the sheet ribs are cut and is at a distance of 200mm or greater from the nearest support, you must provide framing to support the cut ends of the roof cladding each side of the penetration.

Existing flashingIf you have to re-use lead flashings that are built into the structure, special protection is needed.

Method 1: head gutter and apron flashingsThis is often the simplest method, and commonly used for existing protrusions.

Method 2: Flat tray and sleeveTo avoid fitting and sealing end caps to all the sheet ribs on the lowsideofthepenetration,anapronflashingcanbefittedtothesleeve and sealed to the tray each side.

Method 3: Tray gutter for steeper roofsIftheroofpitchismorethan,say1in12(5°),youcuttheroofcladdingsufficientlyhighabovethepenetrationtoallowatrayguttertoraiserainwateroverthetopofthesheetribsanddivertitaround the penetration.

4.12 notching with tinsnipsIf notching tools are not available, flashings can be notched to the rib profilewithtinsnips(Figure4.12).Theprocedureissometimesknownasscribing. After the cladding is fixed and the turn-ups finished, proceed as follows.• Placetheflashingwiththeturned-downedgerestingontheribs.• Markoutthenotchingusingatemplatepositionedovereachrib.• Cutthenotcheswithtinsnips.This procedure is also used for hip cappings.Fasteners for transverse flashingsYou must properly fix both flashings and the ends of all sheets.

Where the cladding is pierce-fixed through crests, and the position of thepurlinallowsit,thefastenersusedtofixthesheets,mayalsofixtheflashings.

On all other installations, pierce-fix your flashing to the ribs or crests of the sheets.

Joining flashingsTheoverlapsoftransverseflashingsshouldbesealedwitharecommended sealant and fastened. Before finally positioning and fixing the lap, turn over the top piece and apply a 3mm bead of sealant across the flashing, about 12mm from the end.

4.13 Apron flashingsCladdingshouldnotfittightlydownontothehorizontalsurfaceofanyapronflashingasitwillretainmoistureandcollectdirtanddebrisandshouldhaveminimumclearanceof25mm.4.14 Gutter apronWhere the ends of roof cladding are exposed to contaminants such as sea salt or industrial pollutants it is better practice to provide an over flashingwhichdischargesintothegutterorspoutingforthefollowingreasons.(seeFigures4.14&4.15)

•Itprovidesameasureofprotectiontotheundersideoftheroofcladdingand the underlay.

•ItprovidessupportfortheroofingunderlaywhichissubjecttodamagefromwindandUV.

•Ifthereisnospoutingorithasalowfront.

•Itprovidesprotectionagainstwind-borneembers.

•Wheretheendsofroofcladdingareexposedinasevereenvironment,contaminants can be driven up the ribs of the cladding. Metal scriber flashings or filler blocks can be used to prevent or inhibit ventilation.

Theover-flashingshouldextend50mmintothegutterandtheunderlayfinishesonthedown-slopeoftheflashing.Ifthereisnoover-flashingtothe gutter the underlay should be extended into the gutter by a minimum of50mm.

5.0 InsulationInsummerbuildingsgethotfromthesunandwewanttocooltheinside;inwinterweoftenheattheinsideandwanttoavoidlosingthatheat. Factors in controlling heat include:

• theorientationofthebuildingrelativetothesun;• externalshadingfromtreesorotherbuildings;• designofthebuilding,especiallyventilationandsealing

atdoorsandwindows;• thecoloursandsurfaceglossofthecladding.

Thefirstthreefactorsareoutsidethescopeofthisbook.Heatisabsorbed into a sheet on one side, and some of that absorbed heat is re-radiated from the other side.

• Light-colouredorshinysurfacesdon’tabsorbmuchheat, and they radiate little.

•Dark-colouredordullsurfacesabsorbalotofheat, andtheyradiatealot.Thisdoesn’tstopyouusingdarkercladdings because you can use reflective foil laminate under the cladding.

5.1 Insulation materialsTypical insulation materials are reflective foil laminates, insulation blankets or batts made from fibreglass, and boards made from polystyrene. Remember that the colour of cladding also has a marked effect.

Foil laminatesFoil laminates reflect heat and can double-up as a vapour barrier to control condensation. Where they are used as a vapour barrier the jointsbetweensuccessivestripsareoverlappedabout100mm,andsealedwithatapeimpervioustomoisture.

blankets and battsBlanketsandbattsminimiseheatconvectionandareavailablewiththe laminate bonded to the fibreglass. They are also effective in reducing noise.

Insulation blankets must be protected from moisture, particularly around the edges of the roof and even more particularly at the bottomendofthecladdingwhererainwaterrun-offcanbeblownbackunderalow-pitchedroof.Iftheblanketoverhangsthebottomsupport,itmayevencomeintocontactwithwaterinthegutter,wheretheinsulationwillabsorbmoistureandremaindampforextended

periods, thus leading to deterioration of the coating on the underside of the roofing and reducing the effectiveness of the insulation.

Polystyrene boardsExpanded and extruded polystyrene is also used for the same purposes as blankets and batts. The boards are more rigid and relativelylesscompressiblewhichdemanddifferentfixingtothatmentioned above. Seek advice from manufacturers of polystyrene insulation.5.2 Insulation thickness (glass wool)Insulationblanketsandbattscancausecladdingtobowoutbetweenthe fasteners. To minimise this problem, the maximum thickness of blankets and batts should be 100mm for pierce-fixed cladding. (Maximumdensity12kg/m3.Formoredenseglasswoolandrockwool,andthickerinsulation,spacersarerecommended.

5.3 Roof safety MeshWhenselectingroofsafetymeshforusewithAluminiumcladdingandor purlins, consideration should be given to:

a)Isolationfromincompatiblematerials

b)Corrosionresistanceofthemeshintheinstalledenvironment.

AsshowninFigure5.1,insulationmaterialswilloftenprovidesufficientisolationofthePermaliteAluminiumsheetingfromsteelsafetymeshandsteelpurlins.Howeverinmanyapplications,wheretheinteriorofthebuildingisacorrosiveenvironment,orifnoinsulationisused,thenappropriatelycertifiedPVCcoatedStainlesssteel mesh or PVC mesh should be used. Where no insulation is used,thenaclosedcellfoamstripshouldalsobeinstalledbetweenthe PVC coated mesh and the sheeting, both at purlins supports and mid span of purlins. For best practice, the foam tape should be 10mm widerthanthepurlintopflange.

5.4 heat control methodsIn roofs, a simple, inexpensive and very effective method is to drape a membrane of reflective foil laminate over the supports before laying the cladding. The laminate can also provide a vapour barrier tominimisecondensation.Ifthemembraneisallowedtodrape50to75mmbetweenthesupportstheairspacebetweenthemembraneandtheroofcladdingwillfurtherimproveheatinsulation
