Occurrence of Permian Rocks in Pakistan
The Permian succession of Pakistan crops out in the Salt Range and Trans-Indus
Khisor and Marwat ranges and partly in the Surghar Range. This succession represents the
southern side of a rift flank basin, along the northern Gondwanan coastal margin (Wardlaw
and Pogue, 1995). Permian succession are also exposed in chitral but they have different
digenetic history and can't be compare with Gondwanian Permian.
Permian rocks of Pakistan are the prolific hydrocarbon reservoirs and are productive in all
parts of the Indus Basin, particularly, in the upper Indus Basin (i.e. Chak Naurang, Dhulian,
Dhurnal, and Meyal oil fields). The most prolific reservoir of Permian in pakistan are Tobra,
Warcha, Amb and Wargal formation.
The distribution of Gondwanian Permian succession are given in fig.01
Fig. 1. Geological map of Pakistan and Persian-Arabia (Modified from Jan and Stephenson,
2011)
This map show the distribution of the Permian in Pakistan which is clearly restricted to the
Salt rang, Khisor range and some part of Shinghar Range.

Permian in FATA
There is no signature of the extension of Permian strata in FATA region. These three
location are the only locatin in Pakistan where we have exposition of Permian strata.
Permian in Surrounding Areas of FATA
In surrounding area of FATA we have two location where we can mark the permian
succession. One is the Khisore range and second one is the Shinghar range.
Prominent Rock Unites of FATA
In FATA the main lithology we have are the Mesozoic succession. which is Triassic ,
Jurassic and Cretaceous succession. Other rock units are mainly Paleocene i.e Hungo
formation. Quaternary deposits are also presents in that region . Some rock units of Cambrian
age (Jehlum group) are also presents.
The general distribution of these units are given in the map given below.
