Value of the Week – Reliability

I am practising reliability when I: • make promises I can keep; • really care about doing what I promise; • return things I borrow; • do my best and finish on time and • plan ahead.

A Message from the Principal Welcome to a fabulous year of teaching and learning at Blaxland Public School. All students have started the year well and we were very excited to meet our new Kindergarten students last Monday. The students and staff have now settled into the routine of teaching learning and it is a pleasure walking into the classrooms and watching our students engaging in the new learning ahead. The School Band The school band lessons have started this week and Mr Skarratt and Mrs Craine are excited to work with our students in 2020. This year we are striving to perform on regular basis and showcase our student’s musical talent. Watch this space. School Attendance All students should not be at school before 8:40am each morning unless they are attending SCOOSH. School Parking The safety of our students is of utmost importance and all parents are asked to follow the road rules at all times. Special Religious Education Scripture will start at Blaxland next Wednesday. Protestant and Catholic Scripture is offered in the school. If parents opt for non-scripture the students will be provided with independent learning activities during this time. A new note has been sent home this week asking parents to indicate the Scripture option for their child. If parents wish to change the scripture option throughout 2020, a letter will need to be written requesting a change. Blaxland Playgroup Playgroup started back this week on Thursday and it was lovely to meet everyone involved. If you are interested in attending the playgroup, please contact the office or Gateway.

Swimming Carnival On Monday 3rd February, we held our annual swimming carnival. Despite the wet start to the morning, everyone had a fabulous time and did their best. Thank you to the many parents who helped out on the day, it was greatly appreciated. Congratulations to the 7 students who have now qualified for the Zone swimming carnival on Friday 21st February at Glenbrook Pool. Good luck Leila, Caitlyn, Grace B, Leo, Tatum, Jaxon C and Josh V. Thank you Mrs Ellwood for your organisation of the day!

P&C News

On Monday we shared a lovely morning tea with the parents of our new kindy kids! Huge thanks to all the parents and the SCOOSH kids who contributed delicious food and to everyone who helped set up, chat to the new parents and make the welcome bags. The P&C is looking forward to officially welcoming our new Principal, Mrs Ellis, and making plans for a great 2020 at our first P&C meeting of the year. We’d love you to join us next Tuesday 11 February at 7.30pm in the school staffroom. All welcome!

In the Garden Welcome everyone to a new year in the garden. Over the school summer holidays the garden has surprised us with some corn and several pumpkins growing, both Jap and Butternut varieties. Did you know that Jap pumpkin is also known as Kent pumpkin but some growers call it Just Another Pumpkin, and so that’s how it got it name. We have about 10 butternut pumpkins and 1 Jap pumpkin growing at the moment but I have spotted more flowers growing so I’m expecting more pumpkins very soon. In a couple of weeks I hope to be able to make some pumpkin soup for the students to have a taste. Also growing in the garden is watermelon. Have you seen the delicious bundle? Each day I see that it has grown considerably and soon we will be able to share it. There are a few more flowers popping up and hopefully more watermelons too. This week, some great work in the garden was done by some students in 2/3S. They helped water the pumpkins, sweet potatoes, strawberries, watermelon, tomatoes, rosemary, and in the Indigenous garden bed, the two bush cherry trees. Students also helped with turning soil and cutting and pulling out weeds. As the garden beds get much needed nurturing with fresh soil, fertiliser and mulch, we will begin planting some new herbs and vegetables in the coming weeks. So keep an eye out for what’s new!

Everyone is welcome to wander around the garden and see what’s growing. If you feel you would like to get involved feel free to catch me most mornings pottering around or you can see Mrs Smith in the office. Happy School Gardening, Theresa aka Maddie’s mum.
