Following lunch, and before we began the afternoon session, the speaker asked for questions or comments from the participants. Johnny Martinez from West Covina stated that he saw a com- parison between the world not being enlightened now, and the world of the dinosaurs, when not being in the light literally led to their extinction. If humans fail to see the light, Johnny wondered aloud, will it signal the beginning of our own extinction? As most of you probably learned in 6 th grade, dinosaurs were the dominant form of life on Earth for about 185 mil- lion years. By comparison, humans have been around for between four and six million years (depending on how you count), and really started looking like us only around 150 thousand years ago. So, we’re the newcomers. Dinosaurs, on the other hand, evolved as the Earth evolved: as the continents broke apart and shifted, as volcanoes and new mountain ranges formed, as the climate settled down. Dinosaurs weathered all of it, surviving every cataclysmic change that the planet threw at them for nearly two hundred million years. The pterodactyls and plesiosaurs ruled the skies and seas while the dinosaurs covered the land with creatures that ranged from the tiny to the immense. In fact, the dinosaurs and their ilk were so successful that they left little room for the ancestors of mammals—small, shy, nocturnal creatures trying mostly not to get stepped on—so the time of the mammals had to wait. About 65 million years ago, every- thing changed. A meteor over six miles across slammed into the waters off the Yucatan peninsula, and the ensuing blast threw so much dust and ash into the air that the cloud circled the globe, blocked out the sun, and led to the extinction of every land animal that weighed more than 50 pounds. The reign of the dino-
