The Society was founded in 1967 with the aim of promoting the advancement of earth science particularly in Malaysia and the Southeast Asian region. The Society has a membership of about 600 earth scientists interested in Malaysian and other Southeast Asian region. The membership is worldwide in distribution.
Warta Geologi (Newsletter of the Geological Society of Malaysia) is published quarterly by the Society. Warta Geologi covers short geological communications and original research, as well as reports on activities and news about the Society. It is distributed free-of-charge to members of the Society. ThePresidentofGeologicalSocietyofMalaysiaandChairmanoftheAGM,DatoYunusAbdulRazak,calledthemeetingtoorderat5.30pmwhenthemandatoryquorumfor themeetingwasachieved.ThePresidentwelcomedmemberstotheAGMandthankedthemforsupportingGSMactivities.HeinformedthemeetingthatGSMhadasuc-cessfulyearandthehighlightwashostingtheGEOSEA2008,whichwasattendedbythePresidentsofallfoundingmembers.TheGSMwasalsoappointedasaPermanentSecretariattillthenextGEOSEA.Inaddition,thePGCEwasheldinMarch2010andmanagedtodrawabout800participatesfromtheprivate,governmentandhighereducationinstitutions.ThePresidentalsohighlightedthattheyear2009wasthefinalyearforcelebratingtheInternationalYearofPlanetEarth(IYPE).
ThePresidentannouncedthattheGeologistActhasbeenapprovedbytheParliamentofMalaysia.Thisisinrecogni-tionofthegeosciencecommunityasaprofessionalgroupinthecountry.TheimplementationoftheActwillcom-menceinmid-2011orearly-2012.
Lastly,thePresidentthankedallCouncilMembersforthe2009/2010sessionfortheirsupportandcooperation.HealsoexpressedhisappreciationtoMadamAnnaandhopedallmemberswillsupportthein-comingCouncil.

4.1 Presidents Report
ThePresidenttabledthePresidentsReport(Appendix1).Mr.TanBoonKongproposedthatthePresidentsReportbeacceptedandthiswassecondedbyDrMazlanMadon.
4.2 Secretarys Report
TheSecretarytabledtheSecretarysReport(Appendix2).TheAGMdiscussedthefollowingmatters:
a. I.MetcalfecommentedontheissueofgettingnominationsfortheBestStudentAward,YoungGeoscien-tistAwardandGeoscientistAward.Therewerenonominationsreceivedin2009.Hesuggestedthatthepromotionoftheawardsbemorewidespread.Inmanycountriessuchawardsareprestigioussuchthatthereisintensecompetitiontogetit.
b. Prof. LeeChaiPeng suggestedthattheSecretariatshouldwritetotheHeadsofGeologyDepartmentsinvariousinstitutionstonominatecandidatesfortheBestStudentAward.TheAGMalsosuggestedthattheYoungGeoscientistAwardbehandledbytheWorkingGrouponPromotionofGeoscience&YoungGeologists.
c. DrNurIskandarmentionedthatthelistoftechnicaltalksinthereportisincomplete.Hewillprovidethemissinginformation.

4.3 Assistant Secretarys Report
TheAssistantSecretarytabledtheAssistantSecretarysReport(Appendix3).Dr.NgThamFattproposedthatthereportbeacceptedandthiswassecondedbyMrTanBoonKong.
4.4 Editors Report
ThePresidentinformedtheAGMthattheEditorhadsenthisapologyfornotbeingabletobepresentattheAGM.DrNgThamFatttabledtheEditorsReport(Appendix4)onbehalfoftheEditor.TheAGMwasin-formedthatseveralissuesoftheWartaGeologiwereundulydelayedastheeditorwashavingdifficultywiththenewsoftware.
Prof.Hutchison emphasizedthatpublicationoftheBulletinandWartarequiredmoreattentionandaction.HementionedthatthequalityofthereviewerisimportantandselectionofreviewersforeverypapershouldbedonebytheEditor.Effortshouldbeincreasedtopublish1or2Bulletinsayear,especiallyformemberoverseas.
EnAskuryAbdulKadirproposedthatthereportbeacceptedandthiswassecondedbyMrNicholasJacob.

a. DrMazlanMadonaskedabout theFormationEvaluationWorkingGroupFundasmentioned in theauditedaccount.MrAhmadNizamHassansaidthatfundbelongstotheWorkingGroupandmembersmanagethefundsfortheiractivity.
Dr.NgThamFattproposedthattheTreasurersandHonoraryAuditorsReportbeacceptedandthiswassecondedbyDr.GanLayChin.
5. Election of Honorary Auditor
MrAhmadNizamHassanproposedtomaintainS.FLee&CoastheHonoraryAuditorfortheyear2010.ThissuggestionwassupportedbyProf.HutchisonandsecondedbyDr.NurIskandarTaib.TheAGMunani-mouslyagreedtoelectS.F.Lee&CoasHonoraryAuditors.
6. Other Matters
6.1 Potential Collaboration between American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) and Geological Society of Malaysia (GSM)
ProfDr.JoybriefedmeetingonthediscussionbetweenAAPGandGSMon28January2010attheMineralsandGeoscienceDepartment.Collaborationwasproposedforthefollowingfouractivities:-1. AAPGtodigitizeandmarketat theirownexpense,onanonexclusivebasis, thepublicationsof the
GeologicalSocietyofMalaysia(GSM).2. AAPGsEducationProgramme,whichisofferingshortcoursesintheAsia-Pacificregion,tobeopened
toGSMmembers.3. AAPGStudentProgrammes,tobeopenedtoGSMstudentmembers.4. AAPG,incollaborationwithGSM,tohostaRegionalGeoscienceConference(Geo-Asia)focusingon
petroleumateveryoddyear.AAPGishostingasimilarconferenceintheArabianRegionateveryevenyear.
Onitemno1, theAGMwelcomethepossibilityofexpandingaccess toGSMpublicationsto theAAPGMembership,providedthereisnoinfringementoftheSocietysIntellectualPropertyRightstoitsproductsandthatthearrangementisonanonexclusivebasis.
Onitemsno.2and3, theAGMwelcomedthecollaborationwithAAPG,particularlywithrespect totheeducationandstudentsprogrammes.TheAAPGhasbeenastrongpartnerformanyyearsandthepossibilityofstrengtheningtherelationshipisverymuchappreciated.
Onitemno4,DrMazlanMadongaveabriefingoftheGeo2010heattendedon8-10MarchinBahrainonbehalfoftheGSM,attheinvitationofAAPG.ThepurposeoftheinvitationwasforGSMtoassessthepotentialbenefitsofco-organisingtheproposedGeoAsiaconferenceinKualaLumpur.HehighlightedthepotentialbenefitsofsucharegionalmeetingtoGSM,suchasincreasingtheinternationalprofileofGSM.However,healso
