It’s a total workout, combining all elements of fitness – cardio, muscle conditioning, balance and flexibility, boosted energy and a serious dose of awesome each time you leave class. Yin Yoga (CHE230)Suitable for almost all levels of students, Yin Yoga is a perfect complement to the dynamic and muscular (yang) styles of yoga that emphasize internal heat, and the lengthening and contracting of our muscles. Yin Yoga generally targets the connective tissues of the hips, pelvis, and lower spine; it targets the connective tissues, such as the ligaments, bones, and even the joints of the body that normally are not exercised very much in a more active style of asana practice. While initially this style of yoga can seem quite boring, passive, or soft, yin practice can be quite challenging due to the long duration of the poses. We can remain in the postures anywhere from one to twenty minutes! Yin and yang tissues respond quite differently to being exercised. You need to experience this to really know what Yin Yoga is all about.

Students are given choices of different stages of the poses so that they can decide how deep they want to go. This is an intermediate class and is designed for practitioners with some yoga experience.

Tai Chi Chih (CHE224)Tai Chi Chih is a form of Chi Kung consisting of 19 movements and one pose. The practice is based on traditional Chinese medicine techniques focused on circulating and balancing internal energy (chi), and was developed by Justin Stone, a Tai Chi Chuan master, as a simple yet effective method for Westerners to learn and participate in the practice without benefit of years of study with a master. Individuals practice Tai Chi Chih throughout the United States and many other countries of the world and are taught the standardized form by accredited teachers who renew their training on a regular basis. This simple technique is easy and enjoyable to learn for people of all ages, including those who must perform it while seated. The beautiful flowing movements are relaxing, and are reported to reduce stress; regulate blood pressure; increase focus and concentration; improve balance, strength and circulation; improve immunity; and increase energy levels.

ARTS & CRAFTS

“BOB ROSS” PAINTING:Remember the popular show on PBS starring the man with the big curly hair who could paint a whole landscape in under 30 minutes? Then you remember Bob Ross. He’s the soft spoken guy painting happy clouds, mountains and trees in about 26 television minutes, using big house painting-type brushes and cooing soothing “you can do it” to his audience. His “Joy of Painting” program remains one of the most recognized TV art shows in history. You asked for more “Bob Ross” painting, and we heard you! Dee Sullivan, an instructor certified by the Bob Ross estate, is back to offer two opportunities to develop your joy of painting.

Introduction to “Bob Ross” Painting (C/S942)Students will learn Ross’ patented wet-on-wet painting technique and will leave the class with their own completed 16 X 24” painting on canvas. Now you can learn to paint just like this iconic artist did on a television show that aired for 25 years and 500 episodes. Classes are especially suited for beginners; students need no previous experience to attend. Participants are encouraged to bring a packed lunch. The price of the class includes all the materials you will need.

Colored Pencil Exploration: An Adventure in a New Media (C/S144)Explore the art of colored pencil with Instructor Donna Housel, founder of the Cumberland chapter of the Colored Pencil Society of America. This course provides demonstrations and instruction on learning how to create art with colored pencils. Although this colored pencil course contains basic information, it will benefit anyone from the beginner to the individual already involved in the creation of art. Go beyond what you think you know about the art of using a colored pencil creatively. Other topics covered in class will be colored pencil types, surfaces, compatible papers and boards. Along with learning to draw with colored pencils, the students will learn the drawing processes of composition, shading, proportion and style. NEW this year is water soluble colored pencil instruction. This course will also lead students through the process of colored pencil artwork from conception to the creation of a final piece of artwork. The student is responsible for their art supplies. The instructor will provide a supply list on the first day of class.

Drawing (C/S021)In this course, students will learn essential techniques of freehand observational drawing, i.e. learning to really see your subject in true form. In black and white, graphite and charcoal, students will learn such topics as beginning lines and then move onto shading, proportions, forming shapes, the illusion of the third dimension on a flat surface, and light and shadows. Students will be urged to draw “something” every day. Practice makes perfect! “Drawing is the most basic passageway through which you can access the power of art to express profound universal ideas, feeling, beliefs and truths. Your work, whether drawing, painting, or sculptuing- will stand only if it is constructed on a solid foundation. ” (Fred Ross, Chairman, Art Renewal Center). Having a strong knowledge of drawing techniques will help the student desiring to work in any medium to create beautiful paintings or drawings by executing a solid design from the very first line. Articles needed for this class are drawing pad, 11 x 14, a variety of graphite pencils: AB, 2B, 6B, a white eraser, and a kneaded eraser. Each week there will be a new project to draw with plenty of one on one instruction. By the end of the class everyone will be able to draw and shade to create a three dimensional piece of art! Instructor Donna Housel is a member of the Pittsburgh Society of Illustrators and the Pencil Art Society. Currently Donna is studying illustration course with Prof. Howard David Johnson of Brandywine School of Illustration. “Drawing is my first love and continues to be a favorite medium.”

Learn how to read a building and view images of exemplary structures from the time of classical Greece to the exciting architecture of today. This class is a fun, drive-by approach to western architecture.

Women Artists - After centuries of neglect, women artists are gradually becoming noticed and valued in the art world. Before the 1960’s, art by women artists were omitted from art history books and there were few exhibitions of women’s art. The National Museum of Women in the Arts has become a research center for historical data re: women artists and it hosts on-going exhibitions of women’s art. Today other museums are joining this trend. Join us as we review and celebrate the unique contributions of women artists.

10/10, Tuesday (1session)3:00-5:00 PMACM: CE BuildingInstructor: Julianne K. Ferris, Ph.D.Course Cost: $30.00Maryland Senior Course Cost: $30.00

Art and Physics - Is there a connection between modern art and modern physics? At first glance they seem to have little in common. Yet both the revolutionary artist and the visionary physicist investigate the nature of reality.

Guided by Leonard Shlane’s book, Art and Physics, we will explore how each field provides insights to help us understand time, space, light, energy, and matter. Artists help us see the world, and physicists help us think about the world. Together they provide complementary views of reality.

Covered bridges are classified by their truss construction. The first known covered bridge in America was designed by the Massachusetts millwright, Timothy Palmer. The bridge was originally not intended to be a covered bridge, but Judge Richard Peters made the suggestion because his estate bordered the river and bridge. The bridge crossed the Schuylkill River at Philadelphia with a length of 550 feet.

The 53rd Fall Foliage will be full of all your favorite vendors of both crafts and food. Take time to meet the craftsmen, savor the flavors and enjoy some entertainment!!

Unless otherwise exempt, as of October 1, 2013, a Maryland Resident must possess a valid Handgun Qualification License before they may purchase, rent, or receive a handgun. Both the instructional portion and the operation and handling demonstration of the course (via simulation) will occur in the classroom.

Approved HQL training courses are offered by Maryland State Police approved Qualified Handgun Instructors. Students must be 18 years of age to enroll. Training is valid for 3 years and must be completed prior to submitting an application for a Handgun Qualification License. The Handgun Qualification License is only needed for purchasing, transferring, or renting a regulated firearm after October 1, 2013 in Maryland.
