How to create a brochure that can raise awareness on teenage drug abuse?
Introduction
Ideas
To do the personal project successfully, I first need to find a topic which I
was interesting in. I want to focus my topic on something that has global
awareness in the world in nowadays. My goal is to raise awareness of drug
abuse to Hong Kong teenagers by creating a brochure. I chose this goal
because when I was looking at the news and reading the newspaper, I
realized that, teenage drug abuse was a serious problem in Hong Kong.
Much of the news were now talking about the consequences of taking
drugs, but in Hong Kong, this situation doesn’t seem to be improving even
though the government frequently creates advertisements, posters and
commercials to appeal teenage not to take drugs. That would be the reason
why I chose this topic.
Goal
To achieve my goal, I would create a brochure. The brochure needs to be
interesting and attractive so that I can raise awareness easily among
teenagers. I would create my brochure booklet using the brochure
templates in microsoft word of 2007, so that it will be easy to handle. To
see whether I had raised or increased teenagers’ awareness to drug abuse,
I would create a survey for teenagers to fill out, asking them whether they
enjoy reading my brochure, is it interesting and attractive and is it
persuasive enough so that they will they know more about drugs and will
prevent themselves on abusing drugs.
Area of Interaction
My focused Area of Interaction is on Health and Social Education. Health
and Social Education deals with the aspect of develop in daily life and to
develop a healthy living. It is also to know how to care for myself and to
develop independence. It is about educating and preparing a person for a
4

healthy life style physically and emotionally. By reading at a brochure, it
can educate a person and help them understand more about a certain topic.
A brochure on teenage drug abuse will increase the understanding of the
reader in drug abusing and the consequences of taking drugs.
Outline- clear plan
To achieve my goal, I have to research the topics that are about teenage
drug abuse and the technique to raise awareness among teenagers. I will
have to research more on drugs and will research about the major concerns
on teenage drug abuse in Hong Kong, the basic information of drugs and
the consequences of drug abusing. I will also have to investigate about the
attitudes and values about teenagers, so that I can create a brochure that
will attract their attention in order for me to raise awareness among them.
The last part that I will have to investigate about was the techniques on how
to create a professional looking brochure, so that I will be able to create a
successful brochure.
Process
Investigate- Research
Investigation stage was the most important part in my whole personal
project. It helped me for my ideas when I was creating my product. I used
a variety of sources for my researches. I started my investigation stage by
finding some primary sources. I firstly went into the internet to search for
some basic information about drug abusing and some basic information
telling me the techniques to create a brochure. After that, I found out that
there are many commercials about preventing drugs nowadays in Hong
Kong, so I started to pay more attention on the advertisements when I was
walking on the street. I took pictures of the posters in bus stops and MTR
stations and the advertisement on the streets which were about drug abuse.
After that, I deepened my research area and included secondary sources in
5

my researches. I went to the library to find books about drugs and books
which include any different kind of drug information. After that, I went to
the Narcotic Division in Hong Kong to get some brochures about drugs. In
the same day, I found out that there was an info centre that was donated by
the Hong Kong Jockey Club. I went there and took pictures of the setting of
that info centre and get more information. There were also a lot of case
studies that provided us to learn, there were real cases of recovered drug
abuser that present in their own feeling and presenting the moment in time
when they first got in touch with drugs.
Investigate- Exploring Area of Interaction
In the early stage of my project, I was still unsure which Area of Interaction
I should focus on. My two choices were Community and Service or Health
and Social Education. I wanted to choose an Area of Interactions that can
fully fit and is connected to my personal project topic and goal, so I decided
to choose Health and Social Education as my chosen Areas of Interaction.
Health and Social Education is related to humans’ physical, social and
mental well-being, to help us make good choices about keeping yourself
healthy and happy. By creating a brochure to raise awareness, it means
that in my personal project, I am going to find ways to interact with
teenagers’ mental development or growth.
Investigate- Finding Software
I needed a software program that could create brochures easily and could
easily create a printable version. I found a few brochure makers online and
tried the brochure template in Microsoft word 2007. I tried to use both of
the software to create the basic outline of my brochure. After my
observations, I thought that the templates in Microsoft word 2007 would be
better for me to use to finish my final product. It was because the Microsoft
word templates included all margins for a printable version, so it is easier
6
How to create a brochure that can raise awareness on teenage drug abuse?
for me since I did not need to spend time on trying and resetting the
margins. Although the designs and functions in the brochure maker were
better, but using Microsoft 2007 is already good enough for me to finish my
product.
Planning- How I will reach my goal
To achieve my goal in my personal project, the most important part for me
to investigate about were the attitudes and values of teenagers. I need to
have clear understanding of the thinking and characteristics of teenagers in
order to create a useful product to achieve my goal. Afterwards, I started to
plan about how I would start my product. There were a few things I have to
concern of. Since brochure is supposed to be design creatively, I would
have to think of some interesting values in my product. In order to achieve
my goal in a more efficient way, I would also need to think of persuasive
language to include in my brochure.
However, people’s awareness on different issues cannot be calculated and
measured. So I decided that the best way to measure this was to create a
survey. The survey would include questions such as whether they think my
brochure is interesting and attractive or not and would the brochure be
persuasive enough to prevent them from taking drugs. By getting the
feedbacks and suggestions from different teenagers from the surveys, it
would help me to improve on things during my project.
Planning- Scheduling
In this stage, we have to plan for our create stage in order give ourselves a
better time management of the process of creating the whole personal
project product. In this stage, I would have to create a timeline and write
down the method of doing the project, so that it is easier for me to follow
and keep myself on time. The planning stage was quite successful of my
product. I tried to follow all my steps and due date according to the
7
How to create a brochure that can raise awareness on teenage drug abuse?
timeline I’ve created. Although I may miss my own due date sometimes, but
I will try to keep up and finish both missed and current tasks before the
next due date that I set for myself, so that my create stage wouldn’t be
overdue or delayed for a very long time. On the other hand, my planning
stage was not too success because while I was planning, I didn’t bothered
about my own time. While creating my timeline for the personal project, I
didn’t think about the time that I have to spend in my normal school work
and after school activities. In this way, I actually predicted that I have more
time than I actually did.
The planning stage is a very important stage to guide me through my whole
project process. During the research stage, I made a whole plan on what I
have to do before doing research. I decided which kind of information I
have to get first, before doing it. I organize my information by
photocopying books and analyze it in my process journal. I organize my
bibliography in easy-bib, so that I can add or change references easily
afterwards. To do my research, I did them step by step by following my
plan. Therefore I can be able to finish my work easily and efficiently,
because I won’t have spent extra time to go back and redo the things that I
had done wrongly. I found out that organizing information in a process
journal is a very clever way. I attached every piece of information of
researches in my process journal, other than just putting them into a plastic
folder. To organize the information in process journal would make my work
more efficient and tidy, so that I could be easier to find information that I
need when I am creating my product or writing my reflective essay.
Planning- What kind of product
There were a few kinds of products I may choose to create, a poster, a
brochure, a video advertisement, or even a music drama. The easiest task
is to create a poster, but it may not include as much detailed information as
I wanted. To create a video or music drama were also another good option,
8
How to create a brochure that can raise awareness on teenage drug abuse?
but then, I realized that videos or dramas will not be able to print in
hardcopy. People were only able to see it through a computer in a softcopy.
Therefore it will not be able raise awareness immediately when I hand them
out to teenagers. At last, I chose to create a brochure instead, because I
thought that to create a brochure was the easiest way to raise awareness
among teenagers. Teenagers usually want some new, special and creative
things and they are not willing to read too many words. Therefore I thought
that to create a brochure was the most suitable option for me to raise
awareness amongst teenagers easily because the characteristics of a
brochure fitted my product aim and project goal fully.
Create- The best way to create my product
The best way for me to create my product is to use an online brochure
maker but the most efficient way is to use Microsoft Word 2007. Using the
brochure templates in Microsoft Word 2007 can save me time from
measuring the unit of a right margin of a brochure since there were a lot of
brochure templates on the Microsoft website and we could choose from the
one we like for our project. On the other hand for an online brochure
maker, most of it online was just a trial version and you would need to pay
for more features and even for a brochure template, although brochure
maker included more template designs, but I would not like to pay, so I
chose to use Microsoft Word to create my product instead of using brochure
maker.
Other than software, I still had a few points of concern when I was creating
my brochure. In the research stage of my personal project, I had
researched about the habits and the things teenagers like. I found out that,
most teenagers would like interest things, such as, to include a little game
or comic into the brochure. As there were no reasonable space to create a
comic in my brochure, so I thought that to include a little crossword or word
search in my brochure would be useful to attract more teenagers’ attention.
9
How to create a brochure that can raise awareness on teenage drug abuse?
Create- brochure
The method of creating a brochure was quite simple. First I chose the
suitable template in the online website of Microsoft word 2007. First, I
would have to download it from the website into my computer. Then, I
typed all different slogan and information that I want it to be appeared in
my brochure in the given text boxes and columns. Then I would add
pictures in a specific given picture box in the template that was for you to
add picture in it. Then the draft of my brochure is simply already finished.
At last, I would just have to add colours and reset the some of the layout, so
that it will look better. I have to hand out surveys and evaluate my final
product from the suggestions given to the interviewers and made
improvements and create a better product.
Create- Word Search
The method of creating a word search was quite simple too. I found a
website program that could create Word Searches. All I had to do is to
enter the words that I picked; the program would create the word search
for me. First, I tried to copy the word search in Microsoft word, after that I
found out that it was hard to adjust the size of it. At last, I think of another
method, I pressed the print screen button on my computer and paste the
picture in a Microsoft word, in this way; I would be able to crop and adjust
the size of my word search easily, so that it could fit in the empty box in my
brochure. After that, the word search would be completed and will be able
play in a clear way in my brochure (see appendix A).
Conclusion
Did I achieve my Goal?
My product helped me to achieve my goal by getting people’s attention to
read my brochure. My brochure design has to be colourful and attractive.
My brochure could not include too many words, if so people may lose
10

attention while reading at it and may just throw it away. Then I will not be
able to achieve my goal, as my goal is to raise awareness, and persuade
people to read my brochure before they throw it or put it down from their
hands.
My final product helped me a lot to achieve my goal. To prove that I had
achieved my goal, as I have mentioned before, I created a survey (see
appendix B) for teenagers to fill in. In the survey, I ask them four questions,
the questions were all based on asking them whether the creation and
design of my brochure had raised their awareness. By evaluating the
surveys I handed out (see appendix C), I found out that most of my
classmates and friends said that my product is persuasive enough to raise
awareness among teens. Although some of the feedbacks said that my
brochure design was not colourful enough to get their attention. These
surveys proved that I did achieve my goal.
Reflecting on the Process
The research process of my project was successful. It helped me a lot in my
thinking about my product. Throughout my research process, I have done
research on teenage drug abuse and brochures. I’ve researched on how to
make an attractive and professional looking brochure. For drug abuse, I’ve
researched different types of drugs, the detailed information of each kind of
drugs and the consequences of taking drugs. I had also researched about
the favourite and hobbies of teenagers, so that I will be able to create a
brochure that was attractive and interesting for teens.
Throughout my research process, I have done research on teenage drug
abuse and brochures. For brochures, I’ve research on how to make a
brochure through Microsoft word and how to create a brochure that is
attractive but looks professional. For drug abuse, I‘ve researched different
types of drugs, the detailed information of each kind of drugs and the
consequences of taking drugs. I’d also research on why do teenage first get
11
How to create a brochure that can raise awareness on teenage drug abuse?
involved with drugs, how casual drug use leads to people’s addiction, some
tips to prevent drug abuse and also a teen survey asking teenagers where
and why are they obtaining drugs. This information may help me
understand why do many teenagers take drugs and gave me many ideas on
how to prevent and persuade them from becoming involving in drugs.
The creation of my product was quite successful. I was able to finish and
get my product done on time. During the create stage, I found out that, to
use the software, “My Brochure Maker” is too hard for me and was not
reasonable to download it online. Therefore I decided to use Microsoft
word at last. While using Microsoft, I applied the templates for making a
brochure in the word document, so that I will not have to waste time on
measuring the margins and lines of the brochure for a printable version.
Evaluation on product
If I had to rate my product, I would think that it is average. It was because
my final product was turned out not to be what I thought it would be. It was
not in the best quality and the printing and colouring of it were not perfect.
It was because that I didn’t use any professional software to create my
product, so the margins of the templates were still not perfect. Also I
thought that my product were not in best quality because my brochure
didn’t seem too professional. At first, I thought of using art paper1 to create
my product. I didn’t use any art paper for my final product at last because
it was difficult to find in normal stationary shops and I had too little time to
search for it, therefore I used normal A4 paper at last.
What I learned
From investigation of the creation stage of my personal project, I learned
mostly about organization and planning. From the very beginning of this
project, we had to plan every step in detail, if not, we were not going to
1 Art paper were usually glossy or matt, it was usually used for brochures ot magazine covers and were usually used for high quality printing.
12
How to create a brochure that can raise awareness on teenage drug abuse?
finish our project in time and in an organized way. After I evaluated my
own progress, I found that my process was always off date, because I didn’t
push myself to get most of the research and plan done before hand, so I
always fall off schedule. I also learned about different life aspects. As
Health and Social was my chosen Areas of Interaction, I learned about how
to socialize and interact with people with different perspectives.
I also learned about using different kind of technology and software. I
understood how useful it could be. Computer technology helped me
through my whole create process of my product. The most important thing
was, I learned one new function in Microsoft Word 2007, finding templates
online that would make our lives easier to create a printable version of
different things.
Possible Improvements
If I could redo this project, I think the main thing I would improve will be to
keep on schedule. Since this was a long term project, I always thought that
I still have a lot of time to get things done, but when the project is about
due, I still found myself way behind and fall off schedule. I would improve
my planning stage in my personal project so that I could get even more
organize during the whole working process of my personal project. Also, in
the design of my product, I could add more pictures and include more
slogan to replace long wordings, I am sure that this could make me have
improvements in achieving my goal.
Applying the Areas of interaction
The Area of Interaction I chose was appropriate. The Area of Interaction of
my personal project is Health and Social Education. Health and Social
Education is about to care for myself and to develop independence. Also,
Health and Social Education is related to humans’ physical, social and
13
How to create a brochure that can raise awareness on teenage drug abuse?
mental well-being, to help us make good choices about keeping yourself
Healthy and happy. Basing on the guiding question and the goal of my
personal project, this AOI fits my project most. As drug abusing is a matter
related to health, and once I am raising awareness of it, it’s a matter of
being social. That is why I think that my AOI choice was appropriate.
