To Do By September 12th, 2014

1. Sign on to Managebac. 2. Go to IB Manager and Projects. 3. Click: Edit Personal Project Proposal

4. Enter your topic into the topic box using the format: An Inquiry Into…. Important Note: Whatever you write for your topic will go onto your official transcript. Examples: (To help this make more sense, the orange is what the student plans to learn about.)

An Inquiry Into The Role of Jewelry Making as Self-Expression for the Blackfeet

An Inquiry Into The Positive and Negative Consequences for Openly Homosexual Athletes

An Inquiry Into The Psychological Effects of Video Games

5. Enter Your Goal Into the Goal Box

Important Note: This is not your product or outcome. You can tell if your goal is well written by asking yourself if there are multiple ways to reach your goal. Here is an example: My goal is to increase community connection through dance. In this example, the product/outcome could be to create a dance troupe, to organize a flashmob, to organize a dance talent show, to create a dance website for people to upload silly dances, etc. Example phrasing that you might use: My goal is to...raise awareness; actively participate; inform others; create/innovate; change behaviors; advocate; help

6. Enter Your Global Context

If you don’t quite remember what each context means, take a look at this document: Global Context Exploration Chart on Google Docs

7. Enter two Inquiry Questions (these will guide your research and your product/outcome):

Course content question: Example: What are the causes and consequences of beach erosion?

Action goal question: (must have multiple options) Example: How can I change people’s behavior?

Important Note: In ManageBac, there is only one place to enter an Inquiry Question. Just write both questions in that box.

8. Complete Process Journal Entry #1: Prior Knowledge and Reasoning For this entry, explain:

why you picked your topic in terms of personal interest and passion how your project relates to a specific subject (have you learned anything in a

class that relates to your project?) someone or something in your life that inspired your project why you selected your global context (use the Global Context chart to identify

the specific aspect of the global context that you feel applies to your project)

Important Note: Your process journal records your process of learning and planning. It is not graded based on grammatical conventions, but on whether or not it demonstrates your growth and the work you put into this project. Using the “journal” option, you can list your answers in bulleted form or write them out in paragraphs. You can also record your thoughts using a program like Sound Cloud and simply share the link to your Sound Cloud where it says, “website.” You can even film yourself and upload a YouTube link. If you prefer to write things using good ‘ole pen and paper, write your entry in a journal, take a picture, and upload the picture.

9. Complete Process Journal Entry #2: Planning For this entry, discuss and outline:

your method of keeping track of information (system that will help you keep track of your questions, answers and source citations)

main information/skills you need to learn (this can be in a chart form, bulleted list, questions, or any other clear and logical format)

benchmarks you will put in place (what do you need to get done and when should it be done by)

Meeting #1 with Supervisor will be Sept. 12th. You will meet to determine your product/outcome. (Put this on your benchmark list.)

10. Complete Process Journal Entry #3.

Brainstorm as many products/outcomes as you can think of that will help you achieve your goal.

Brainstorm ways you might evaluate your product/outcome. How do you know you met your goal?

Example:

My goal is to improve as a nature photographer. Optional Products/Outcomes: create a photo album that shows the progression of my work; host a photo gallery tour of my best shots; create a website that operates a portfolio for my work Criteria Brainstorm: -5 photos of the same subject (a tree at dawn, Kailua beach, Mount Olomana, a gecko)…or maybe I should have 5 photos with the same theme (strength, serenity, joy)…I want to be able to show that over time my work improved. -maybe I could organize my work by technique (lighting, angle, context, etc.)…then, I could show the progression of photos I NEED TO TALK TO MY PHOTOGRAPHY MENTOR! HOW DO I SHOW MY GROWTH?? -outside panel of evaluators (maybe students?? Maybe teachers??) -I could have the panel pick the best photo from a series…maybe that would show how much I’ve improved in a few months
