General Information on Single Use Isolation Gowns.The need for PPE should be based on the precautions required to protect against infectious agents based on the mode of transmission. Choice of fluid resistant or fluid impermeable will be made based on the risk and amount of fluid exposure anticipated during the patient or patient environment encounter.

• AATCC 42-2017: Measures resistance of fabrics to the penetration of water by impact (AATCC, 2018)

• AATCC 127-2017: Measures resistance of fabric to the penetration of water under hydrostatic pressure (AATCC, 2017)

• ASTM F1670-17: Evaluate resistance of materials used in protective clothing to penetration by synthetic blood

under conditions

of continuous liquid contact (ASTM, 2017)

Application

Minimum standard for isolation gowns for minimal amounts of spray or droplets.

Commonly used as an Isolation gown. Suitable for situations involving low amounts of fluid or sprays.

Used where more moderate levels of fluid exposure or sprays may be anticipated.

Used where large amounts of fluids or sprays may be anticipated or encountered.

General Information on Surgical / Procedural Masks.The need for PPE should be based on the precautions required to protect against infectious agents based on the mode of transmission. In the majority of situations where standard respiratory protection is needed, a single use surgical mask (minimum level 2 barrier) is appropriate.

Application

For general purpose medical procedures, where the wearer is not at risk of blood or body fluid splash. To protect staff and/or the patient from droplet exposure to microorganisms.

For use in emergency departments, dentistry or changing dressings on small wounds where minimal blood droplet exposure may occur.

For all surgical procedures, major trauma first aid or in any area where the healthcare worker is at risk of blood or body fluid splash.

Note: These characteristics are based on an unworn mask. The characteristics may differ from expectations due to individual fit characteristics.

Considerations when using a surgical mask include:Masks should be changed between patients and when they become soiled or wet & never reapplied after they have been removed; masks should not be left dangling around the neck; touching the front of the mask while wearing it should be avoided; hand hygiene should be performed upon touching or discarding a used mask.
