1 PURPOSE The purpose of this document is to provide Port Users with the minimum PPE requirements when working at Lyttelton Port or one of LPC’s operational facilities.

2 OVERVIEW Wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a condition of entry to Lyttelton Port Company’s operational facilities. PPE might not prevent accidents, but may prevent/reduce the severity of the potential injury.

All safety equipment must meet AS/NZS standards or be MNZ approved, must be a good and comfortable fit and maintained in good condition.

3 ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The PPE roles and responsibilities are provided in detail below…

ROLE RESPONSIBILITY

Employees

• Look after your PPE and request renewal if PPE is damaged, out of date or becomes defective (e.g. cracks in ear muffs or hard hat, out of date PPE, scratches on safety glasses)

• Wear PPE as directed by LPC and where appropriate

Managers / Supervisors

• Ensure that all personal protective clothing and equipment in your area is adequately maintained.

• Ensure your staff has access to the necessary PPE and use it appropriately.

• Provide approval for replacement of: • Climbing style helmets

• Life saving apparatus (LSA) • Fall arrest protection

• Leg coverings (chaps)

Store Men • Record issues and re-issues of PPE on each employee’s record.

4 HOW TO APPLY THE MINIMUM PPE REQUIREMENETS

NOTE: Log Yard and Oil Wharf - These areas have particular requirements for PPE. These apply on top of the minimum

requirements and must be followed at all times. They are indicated by signs and notices in the area. If in doubt, check with your supervisor.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS The minimum requirements outlined below under the green heading apply to all LPC staff, visitors, contractors and port users who enter the port.

Note: Any departure from these minimum requirements need a documented and approved, task specific Risk Assessment justifying the exemption.

These PPE standards also detail additional equirements when staff are working in particular areas (orange headings) or undertaking specific tasks that have addtional risk. (blue headings)

AREA SPECIFIC MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

These minimum requirements apply to specific areas of work within LPC. They need to be

followed by staff and anyone else visiting or working in the particular area.

Task Specific per area These requirements apply to tasks performed within the

respective area.

TASK SPECIFIC MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

These minmum requirements apply to the listed tasks, irrespective of the area in which they are

performed.

Hi-Viz vests, jackets or attachments* Must be worn within all LPC controlled environments

Closed-toe footwear Must be worn within all LPC controlled environments

Sunscreen on exposed skin

Recommendation: When working outside during daylight hours, protect yourself from the ultra violet rays of the sun. Apply sunscreen to exposed skin to protect it. The sunscreen should be of a high SPF rating (at least SPF15) and should be used and reapplied as per instructions on the bottle. Use sunglasses for eye protection

Wear appropriate clothing in wet and cold weather

Recommendation: In bad weather, use appropriate wet and cold weather clothing. Jackets, gumboots, etc. Ensure hard hat is adjusted properly when wearing a beanie under it.
