The field of psychology is an in depth look inside the inner and outer world of the
human and animal mind and perception. It’s fascinating to dig down deep into the mental
processing of the mind. The different subspecialties in Psychology make the profession
broader to understanding what was for so many years unknown. For this reason I want to
obtain a higher level of education in the Psychology/Counseling field. The program that
is of great interest to me would be the Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology. My
ultimate goal is to obtain a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology with minor in Marriage and
Family Counseling.
The reason that I chose this field of study is because as a young child I have
always recognized my ability to actively listen to people as they talk. I am the person that
everyone depends on to solve problems and give advice to others on how they may deal
with day to day situations. The most important aspect that I poses and believe is
important in the field of Psychology is to pay close attention to detail in a person’s non-
verbal and verbal communication, which would allow one to read between the words and
focus more on the message.
My background is in the Allied profession of the medical field. The training that I
have obtained has led me to this career path. I have studied in the field of medicine as a
Registered Medical Assistant, Patient Care Technician, and a Certified Nursing Assistant.
In these levels of the medical field you get to know the clients and patients on a more
personal level, therefore, I decided that knowing the patient behind the illness is what I
want to know more about. Finding out things about mental and cognitive behaviors, as
well as different disorders that many people develop from different traumas and events
that takes place in a their lives could ease the pain or cure the illness altogether.
When I first came to Argosy University, after about a few months, I wanted to get
a better experience of how it would be to counsel or talk to people in a real crisis other
than close relatives. I signed up for a course, offering training with the Suicide and Crisis
Intervention program. With this program they teach ordinary people who have a passion
for helping others in a crisis, the skills to counsel others; this program uses mostly the
Carl Rodgers method of counseling. In this course I was able to get the training, talk to
actual callers on the suicide and crisis hotline dealing with from a crisis to suicide
attempts.
I chose Argosy University because I have just recently finished my bachelor’s
degree in Psychology at Argosy’s Dallas campus. I have learned a lot in the courses, but
the most important thing that I liked, was the caring and earnest dedication of the faculty
and staff, the small number of students to a class also allowed one to have a one on one
experience with the teachers, and I also like the ability to form close bonds with fellow
classmates. Argosy offers both the programs I am interested in; The Clinical Psychology
program on bother the Masters and Doctorate levels. Most importantly I would rather
stay with a school in which I know that I will get the best education and experience
possible.
After obtaining my Masters in Clinical Psychology, I would like to successfully
get a job in the field, working with children and adults who have been subjected to sexual
and physical abuse. By obtaining my Doctorates in the Clinical Psychology I would be
able to open my own practice. This degree would also allow me to have the opportunity
to conduct research studies, plan more efficient methods for treatment and counseling
skills.
