27  A Tale of a False Prophet: Steve ElwartFalse prophets and false prophecy are present through theNew Testament. Jesus warns against false prophets in Matthew7:15–23, pointing out that they can be recognized by their fruit.1 John 4:1–3 also cautions believers about false prophets, notingthat “spirits” that deny the reality of the incarnation are false andnot from God.

DEAR FRIENDS

FROM THE EDITOR

Dr. Chuck Missler  Editor-in-chief, Personal UPDATE

M

any are unsure about what challenges and opportunities the newyear will hold. In our ministry, we find ourselves being calledto teach in the most unlikely of places, and to those whoperhaps have realized their Biblical understanding is not

 wholly based on sound doctrine.

As we strive to become more Bible literate and fellowship withone another (iron sharpening iron), let us not forget that there aremany that have a misguided or corrupted understanding of the Word, some with no understanding at all. Let us also be reminded that Godcan turn the unlikeliest of characters, even those that fiercely opposeHim, into believers as he did with Saul.

Some challenges and developments ahead are in the fields ofSocial Media, I.. and video on-demand. We have a new KI StudentPortal (kistudy.khouse.org ), designed with mobile devices in mind.KIStudy provides three bronze level KI courses, each containing aseries of quizzes that the student can take. Each quiz comprises of avideo (streamed right from the website), downloadable PDF notesand a series of questions. Upon completion of the course, the studentis awarded a certificate that can be downloaded and printed if desired.

We plan to roll out more courses and features over the comingmonths, so if you haven't done so already, I encourage you to try it

out, the first quiz is free!May we not sit on the sidelines, but be a willing servant of the

Lord in season and out.

In His Holy Name,

Chuck

Te dream of immortality begins in the oldest book of the Bible:

For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand atthe latter day upon the earth: And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my fleshshall I see God:Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and notanother; though my reins be consumed within me.

 Job 19:25-27 KJV

Beginning with the Basics:

What is the gospel? (“Good News”? No “cop-out” evasions here!)Paul gives it to us in a nutshell. We must first learn precisely what thegospel is.

Paul had already preached it.1 After his Damascus conversion,Peter and James spent time with Paul in Jerusalem to fill in thedetails.2 After 14 years passed, he returned to Jerusalem to confirm

with the apostles whether his preaching was in harmony with thegospel they proclaimed.3

Tree fundamental essentials:

1. First of all, Jesus died. (First in importance, not chronology.“Christ” (not “Jesus”): Paul uses his official title of the Messiah,

our goel , the Kinsman-Redeemer.He did not just disappear. Te authorities (both Jewish and

Roman) made sure that His death was undeniable! Te authoritiesoutwitted themselves when they took so many precautions to makesure Jesus was dead and remained in the grave!

1 Acts 13:30; Gal 1:1

2 Gal 1:18-19

3 Gal 2:1

 Jesus died. He was buried.

He was raised on the third day.

Furthermore, Paul says twice in three verses “…according to theScriptures (i.e., Old estament).”4 Jesus’ death and resurrection wasnot an afterthought. Tis was planned before the foundations of the

world (and even hidden in the genealogy of Noah).5

He died for our sins  (not just died).”6 Te phrase “Christ died for our sins”is the doctrinal summary of the atonement:

a) As our Substitute, Christ died to appease God and meetthe demands of the law;7

b) As our Advocate, He effected

reconciliation and madeus righteous before God;8

c) As our Mediator, Heestablished a new covenantand accepted us as partners;9

d) As our Savior, He grants us

eternal life through faithin Him.10

2. He was buried. Only Paul mentions the burial. It pointsbackward to the reality of death and forward to the character of theresurrection. Paul even identifies the believer’s baptism with Christ’sburial.11 Jesus’ physical body was placed in the tomb. On the thirdday a new glorified body came forth, no longer subject to time andspace.12 Te Greek passive voice conveys the sense that God alone isthe agent who creates life.

3. He was raised on the third day. Te passive voice denotes theimplied agent, God.13 ranslations fail to exploit the differences inGreek verb tenses between verses 3 and 4: Te Greek uses the pasttense to describe a single action in the past for Jesus’ death and burial.4 Isa 53:5-6, 8-9; Ps 22:16; cf. Mat 26:28; 1 Pet 3:18

But for the verb “to be raised” the Greek has the perfect tense toindicate an action that occurred in the past but has lasting relevancefor the present.14 Jesus was raised from the dead and continues His

life in the resurrected state.15

If the Roman or Jewish authorities could have produced the bodyof Jesus, all the rumors would have quickly stopped, and it all wouldhave ended. But they could not. Te empty tomb emphasizes that

Jesus’ resurrection was physical! (It is emphasized in all four gospelsthat the body was missing).16

Omissions? What is remarkable is what Paul does not  include in his “Gospel.”

He makes no mention of Jesus’ miracles, His teachings, or Hisexamples. Tese are important, but not “the Gospel”! Te focus ison three principal things: Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection.Tese overshadow all other aspects of His ministry.

“Tird day according to (which) Scriptures”? Jonah 1:17,linked with Matthew 12:40.17 Jesus also taught that He would bekilled and raised the third day.18

Other “Three Days” Examples

a) Tird day of Creation: Double Blessing;19

b) the Akedah: Abraham’s Offering of Issac;20

c) Joseph Interprets wo Dreams21

16 Mat 28:5- 6; Mark 16:5-6; Luke 24:3-4; John 20:6-8

17 Also, Ps 16:8-11 with Ps 110:1; Some also point to Hos 6:2. Gen 22 is perhaps the most dramac example:

After His resurrection, Jesus’ physical body could be touched,

Appearances of Jesus

On that Sunday, Jesus appeared to the women; Mary Magdalene;two men on the road to Emmaus; Peter; and, the 10 disciples inthe upper room.35 Paul first mentions Peter, whom he usually callsCephas, the Aramaic name for Peter.36

Sunday evening, the disciples inthe upper room told the men fromEmmaus that He had appeared toSimon.37 Tat morning the angelinstructed the women to tell thedisciples “and Peter” to go to Galilee

Tere Jesus forgave Peter and reinstated him.39 (Te book of Actsreveals that immediately after Jesus’ ascension Peter became theundisputed leader in the Jerusalem church.)

Would you believe that JFK was shot with an arrow? Why not?oo many witnesses are still alive who know better! So, also, duringthe first century with respect to Jesus Christ: “Five hundred brethrenat once.” (Nothing in the Gospels or Acts clearly corroborates thefigure of 500 brothers. Some associate this with the closing words ofMatthew’s Gospel and the great commission.) A crowd would not be

surprising, since He announced this appearance through the womenearlier. Most of the 500 were still living at the time Paul wrote thisepistle (about 25 years after the crucifixion). Apparently both Pauland the Corinthians were acquainted with many of them.

Half a year before Jesus’ death, His brothers, including James, still did not believe on Him.40 But immediately after Jesus’ ascension,

His brothers believed and were with the apostles in the upperroom.41 James listened to Paul when the former persecutor returnedto Jerusalem as a believer.42 James filled Peter’s place when theapostle fled Jerusalem after his release from prison.43 After his thirdmissionary tour, Paul reported to James and the elders in Jerusalem.44

The Physics of Immortality

Frank J. ipler, Professor of Mathematical Physics at ulaneUniversity , is a major theoretician in the field of global generalrelativity, that rarefied branch of physics created by Stephen Hawkingand Roger Penrose.

In devising a mathematical model of the end of the universe, ipler (a professed atheist) came to a stunning conclusion: Using themost advanced and sophisticated methods of modern physics, relyingsolely on the rigorous procedures of logic that science demands,he created a proof of the existence of God.

Furthermore, he believes that every human being who ever lived will be resurrected from the dead. He claims that he arrived at hisproofs of God and immortality “in exactly the same way physicists

calculate the properties of an electron.” His book explains why henow believes that the central claims of Judeo-Christian theology arein fact true, and that these claims are straight-forward deductions ofthe laws of physics as we now understand them.

T he Analogy of a Seed.45

It is no more difficult to believe in the resurrection than it is

to believe in a harvest! What emerges from a seed that “dies” isincomparably more glorious than what was planted. (Examples: bulbsvs. gladiolas, a butterfly, et al. …) Plants (and people) do not rise oftheir own volition, nor by chance. Only by the decisive (aorist) actionof God.

Six is the Number of Man

Our DNA is a 3-out-of-4 error-correcting code, using the samefor all. Digitally different, but yet by a common architect. At thecellular level, an intact human immune system will virtually alwaysrecognize and reject a nonhuman transplant as foreign. What isthe underlying characteristic within humanity that speaks ofour uniqueness?

On virtually every nucleatedcell in a person are small markers(lipoproteins to be precise) calledantigens. Teir official designationis “histocompatibility antigen” or“human leukocyte antigen (HLA).”Tese certain antigens are the same in every human and are only

found in humans, although given individuals may have differentarrangements and collections of these molecules. (For example, these antigens are responsible for the different ABO and Rh systemsimportant in blood transfusions.) Te irony is that in every person,on virtually every cell, this marker of mankind is a product of onecertain chromosome: Chromosome #6.

45 John 12:24

 ...in every person,

on virtually every cell, this marker of mankind

is a product of one

certain chromosome:

Here, in a single verse, Paul expresses the doctrine of sin, the law,and death. wo years later, Paul expanded the complete doctrine inhis Epistle to the Romans.54

Three “Tenses” of Salvation

• “Been Saved”: Past tense. Regenerated by the Spirit. Aorist:once and for all. Spiritually linked to Jesus. Te Shepherd keepsthe sheep.

• “Being Saved”: Present tense. Growing as an instrument ofHis Grace. We are all “works in progress.” We need to apply

our salvation to our lives. You may be saved, but what haveyou done since? It is possible to believe in vain. It is not just an“insurance policy” against going to hell.

• “Will be Saved”: Future tense. Te resurrection.

Do you have your passport for the transit that’s coming?

ver the years many who have traveled with usto Israel have asked us to put together a

‘Footsteps of Paul’ or ‘Seven Churches ofRevelation’ our. I have to admit I was a bitlukewarm to the idea but decided we needed toexpand all of KI ours. We have some friends fromPerth, Australia who raved about a tour they took tourkey and decided to make that our fall extension.

Once the tour had enough people to assure it was a go, I started to do my research in order tobe prepared to teach on each of the sites. In thisprocess, I began to get very excited because, onceI immersed myself back into the seven lettersthat Jesus dictated to John to the seven churches,I began to realize that they all had a message that

was convicting as well as relevant to my life!

Our Fall Issachar our to Israel was amazing and once we saidgoodbye to about half that group (because the other half was comingalong with us to urkey), I began to feel a bit uneasy as this would beour first venture to urkey and I knew that urkey was very differentfrom Israel! We landed the next day in Izmir and drove to our hotel

that was about an hour away, just outside of Ephesus. Tat firstevening we had our orientation and met our guide and got preparedfor something that would turn out to be much more than I hadexpected! Our itinerary was different from the order in which thechurches are addressed in Revelation. I soon realized that the Lordhad made special arrangements for us and I have come to believe that

Next up would be Tyatira, which would probably be the leastimpressive visual site of the seven, BU the Lord had a message for usthere as well. As we were driving through the modern city of Tyatira,

we came to the site of the ruins that were, as I said, very unimpressive. We seemed to be right smack dab in the middle of the modern cityand saw a city block fenced off with ancient broken down walls.Tere was lots of traffic and we had to hurry off the bus and findour way to the entrance of this site. Once we gathered, we walkedaround a bit and then gathered together and just sat on some of theold boulders that once made up this town. As I got our workbook out

and gathered our folks together, I noticed three teenage urkish girlsgiggling and watching our group intently. More about them later.

As we prayed the Spirit brought the following to mind: Jesus toldthose at Tyatira that they tolerated the works of Jezebel and that ifthey did not repent they would bethrown into the great tribulation.

All of a sudden we were standing on

holy ground - this unspectacular sitehas a message to those who had ‘earsto hear’ and as I began to speak, those giggling girls were hanging onevery word that was coming out ofmy mouth.

Tyatira means “continued sacrifice” - introduction to the Mass.Tis is a snapshot of the church during the Dark Ages. Tis wasthe most insignificant city of the seven and probably the smallestcongregation. Tis city was built to defend Pergamos. It was adefensive outpost. John depicts Jesus as having eyes like a flame of fireand his feet were like bronze. Tese idioms stand for the truth that

 Jesus told those at

Thyatira that they

tolerated the works

of Jezebel and that if

they did not repent they

would be thrown into

the great tribulation.

what was once a cave on the hillside overlooking the bay. We realized we were sitting in what was most likely the place where John sawhis vision of Jesus (see Revelation 1) and then began to write down

the things he was told by Jesus. Te scenery was breathtaking, and we had a great time of fellowship as we ferried back to Izmir laterthat afternoon.

Te next day the order of our church visits were Smyrna, Sardis, and ending in Philadelphia. As we got to Smyrna the Lord pressed into me that the theme here was Death. As we settled down to read over

this letter we were reminded that of what ISIS was doing to fellowChristians on the eastern border of urkey. It was not a coincidencethat in Smyrna Jesus told His own that they were going to die.He does not promise deliverance but expects them to finish theirraces faithfully. After all, even in the name Smyrna we see the rootsof death - Myrrh - and the only use for myrrh was for embalming.

We must never forget that this was the third gift from the Magi.

 Jesus was born to die!

As we were sitting down in themarble archways, we could look upthe hill and see the traditional siteof where Polycarp was martyred.Polycarp was a 2nd-century Christian

bishop of Smyrna. According to theMartyrdom of Polycarp, he died amartyr, bound and burned at thestake, then stabbed when the firefailed to touch him.

“80 + 6 years have I served Him,

and He never did me wrong. How canI now speak evil of my King who hassaved me?”Polycarp of Smyrna (ca. 69–ca. 155)quoted in a letter from the church

of Smyrna.

in this letter from the Lord of the Church. His message is simple …BEAR FRUI and FINISH SRONG!

Next up, the one church we all want to be a part of …Philadelphia! Honestly, this site was not very memorable. Much likeTyatira it is located in the heart of a city, and with all the hustle andbustle of an inner city, with the noises and traffic, it was a bit strange.

We all knew that of all the churches this one seemed to get thehighest grades but I think the Holy Spirit was not content on lettingus have a Mount of ransfiguration type experience! Remember how

Peter just wanted to sort of hang out and soak it all in? You know …that “can it get any better than this” type of experience?

Bases of ancient arches in Philadelphia were the only visual ruins, but they did enable one to envision how massive the structure once

was. Te truth is, however, that for the one church with such highgrades there is virtually nothing there today! Te message was clear -

don’t rest on your laurels; there is still much work to do!Now for one of the most impressive sites - Laodicea. As we were

driving up to the site I was fixated on how barren things were,

which fits the tenor of this letter. As we got further into the site it wasamazing to see how extensive the ruins were! Tis area was truly a siteto behold! As we opened the Word to read this letter it was so easy to

see what Jesus was referring to when He spoke these words:17 Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have needof nothing’—and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked—

Revelation 3:17 NKJV

Te Laodiceans were blinded and the picture of Jesus on the

outside of the church knocking did not go unnoticed. I think we allagreed that, as a whole, today’s church is living in the age of Laodicea.

Finally, we come to the end and what is first in the order fromthe text was our last stop. Anyone who has been to urkey can testifyto the glory of Ephesus! Te site is the most impressive and truly theHoly Spirit was saving the best for last for all of us on this tour!

Te message that we heard as we were sitting in the same theater where Paul spoke to the crowds in Acts 19:28 was to return to ourfirst love and to reignite our passion for Jesus!

“Return to Me, and I will return to you,” Says the Lord of Hosts.  Malachi 3:7 NKJV

As I look back I can honestly say that, just like in Israel when Jesus spoke to the Pharisees on the Mount of Olives regardingcalming the crowds down, when He said that even if they werequiet the rocks would cry out, so too the rocks and ruins of theSeven Churches of Revelation in urkey are still crying out today!Te question is do we have ears to hear what the Spirit is sayingto His Church?

We will be returning to urkey following our “All-New IssacharFall Israel our.”

JONESTOWN MASSACRE

Dr. Steve Elwart, P.E., Ph.D., Executive Research Analyst, Koinonia Institute

A TALE OF AFALSE PROPHET

F

alse prophets and false prophecy are present throughthe New estament. Jesus warns against false

prophets in Matthew 7:15–23, pointing outthat they can be recognized by their fruit.1 John 4:1–3 also cautions believers about falseprophets, noting that “spirits” that deny the realityof the incarnation are false and not from God.In Acts 13:4–12 a false prophet named Bar-Jesusopposes Paul and Barnabas. Paul calls the false

prophet a “child of the devil” and someone whois “full of all kinds of deceit and trickery”( Acts 13:10). God then strikes the false prophet

 with blindness.

False prophets in the New estament areoften associated with the end times. Mark 13:22,

for example, states that “For false messiahs andfalse prophets will appear and perform signs and

wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.”Te theme of deceit connects the work of falseprophets with the work of Satan, who is knownfor his deceiving character and works (cf. Gen. 3).Tat is why Paul can call the false prophet in

Acts 13 a “child of the devil.”

False prophetsexist today. Evennow they are in thebusiness of deceit.

Many were the founders of religions which are still in existence today. Many flourished for a relatively short period of time and endedtragically, some only with a loss of faith but others with a loss of

physical and spiritual life.

In 1997 members of the Heaven’s Gate cult committed masssuicide, believing their souls would be transported to a spaceshiptrailing the Hale-Bopp comet. Teir 65 year old leader Marshall

Applewhite, who had a history of checking himself into mentalinstitutions, believed he was a descendant of Jesus Christ. He told

his followers that he had a divine revelation that the world was dueto be ‘wiped clean’ by the alien founders and that they needed to leavethe earth.

On March 26, 1997, Rio DiAngelo who had been chosen to‘stay on Earth’ and continue preaching the group’s message wentto the Heaven’s Gate House and found 39 people dead.

DiAngelo was the lone survivor.

One can read about these false teachers, but they seem to rarelyhit home. For this author, an infamous case of a false teacher becamevery real when one witness to an eventual tragedy lived close to home.

Tirty-six years ago, a 20-year Mississippi native found himself

locked in a jail cell in Guyana wondering what happened to his world– a world in which his family and friends were still alive. Tey wereall lying dead in a grove in a South American jungle that he hoped

 would be their paradise.

November 18, 1978, Herbert Newell from rural Sharkey Countyhad gone off one morning on the communal fishing boat only

to return to find his loved ones dead; part of the 909 victims of ateaching promoted by a false prophet.

Te mass suicide / murder was the largest such event in modernhistory and resulted in the largest single loss of American civilian lifein a deliberate act until September 11, 2001.

emple of Los Angeles. Te family had never attended churchtogether, so they decided to try this church as a place they could

worship as a family. Tey were pleased with the fact that people of all

races and ages were worshipping together. Little did they know thenthat Jones had already started to stray from Te Word.

“Had we been in church and reading our Bible, we would haveknown that this was not something Christian-like or of God,”Newell said.

Te more they attended the emple services the more involved

they became in the church. On weekends they would join bus loadsof other members and travel from Los Angeles to San Francisco,

 Jones’ base of operations.

Instead of joining the military, Herbert took a emple-sponsoredbus tour of the country with other church members. Tis trip onlydeepened his commitment to Jim Jones and the People’s emple.

“I thought it was a good thing, a good place for me,” Newell said.

While the emple was growing, there was another emple facilitybeing built - the Peoples emple

 Agricultural Project, commonly known

as Jonestown - in Guyana, a country onthe Caribbean coast of South America. In 1977 Jones announced thatthe church members would be moving there. Jonestown was locatedin the middle of a lush, dense jungle that appeared isolated from theoutside world.

Te place seemed ideal.

“It’s like the Bible says, many false prophets have gone out intothe world,” Herbert said.

Newell’s father had never liked Jones’ teaching and had been adamantthat his family not follow the man to South America.

“My father didn’t want to have nothing to do with it. ‘Tat man’s just going to take you over there and kill you,’” Newell said, “I alwaysfound it strange and haunting that he would say that.”

Herbert soon found out that his father was right.

Once at the compound, Jones, obviously on drugs, wouldslur propaganda over the public address system. Newell said that

sometimes at the end of a workday, Jones would call town meetingsknown as “White Nights” that lasted long into the night.

“He asked each of us individually what we would do if we wereinvaded by mercenaries or whatever. Tis went on until like 2 or 3o’clock in the morning,” Newell said. “You’ll do almost anything

when you’re deprived of sleep. You’ve been working all day. You

haven’t had time to take a shower and you’re doing all these thingsand he’s asking everyone what they would do. I’m thinking, ‘Hell, justlet me get some sleep.’”

Jones kept his followersin line by turning themagainst each other. He

encouraged them to reportanyone who showeddissatisfaction or had brokenhis “commandments”.

“If someone wrote youup, you would be on the

floor that night. You wouldhave two people come upthere and box you [in]. It

was a way of inciting fear inyou to make you conform to

whatever it is that he wantedyou to do.”  Reverend James Jones

At the compound, as Jones descended ever further into hisdelusions, his grip on his followers tightened. Even though manypeople wanted to leave or send their children back to the United

States, few dared to speak for fear of Jones’ wrath. Later, Newell would discover that his mother had wanted to send her own childrenhome to live with their father, but at the time, it was never discussed.

Meanwhile Newell worked various jobs. He worked as a woodcutter, helped manufacture charcoal, and finally worked aboardthe emple’s fishing boat, the Cudjoe. For the most part, Newellfound the work rewarding; he said that only toward the end didthings turn really bad.

Not long after the move to Guyana, U.S. Congressman LeoRyan’s (D-California) office in the 11th District began to hear ofdirect requests for assistance from concerned families whose relativeshad disappeared into the Guyana jungle to join the Jonestowncommunity. Newspaper articles also raised concerns. Tere were

claims of social security irregularities, human rights violations, and people being held against their will at Jonestown.

In June 1978, Congressman Ryan read excerpts from the swornaffidavit of Debbie Blakey,a defector from Jonestown,

 which included claims that

the community at Jonestownhad, on a number of occasions, rehearsed for a mass suicide.Reports about the group, bothfavorable and unfavorable, poured in.

Ryan hired an attorneyto interview former Peoplesemple members and relativesof members to determine

whether the group had violatedany Federal or Californiastate laws. Congressman Leo Ryan

members. As the evening progressed, reporters interviewed Jim Jones while Ryan talked to Peoples emple members whose names had beenprovided by relatives in the U.S.

During the course of the evening, a Jonestown member passed anote to NBC reporter Don Harris indicating that he and his family

wished to leave. Another member made a similar verbal request toanother member of the party. Both requests were reported to Ryan.

Ryan also was able to address some of the members of the Peoplesemple where he said, “Whatever the comments are, there are some

people here who think this is the best thing that ever happened tothem in their whole life.” Tey erupted with cheers and thunderousapplause.

Te next morning Newell was ordered out on the Cudjoe. He thought it strange since it was Saturday and the boat typicallydidn’t leave port until Monday. Newell thought it was just one of

 Jones’ idiosyncrasies.

“I told my mom, my girlfriend and my brothers and sistersthat I would be back,” Newell said. He never had the chance to keephis word.

As he was boarding the Cudjoe, Newell’s friend Eddie Crenshaw

made an ominous comment. “Crenshaw said ‘When you guys getback here tomorrow, we’ll all be gone; we’ll be dead.’ I told himthat was a lot of B.S. I couldn’t picture it. I couldn’t believe it,”Newell said.

As the Ryan party was boarding their planes to prepare to leave, they were fired on by two of Jones’ disciples. Ryan, three members

of the media, and one of the emple members who chose to leave were killed. Six others were seriously wounded. Te attackers leftthe airport soon after. One of the planes in the group was able toescape the melee and reported news of the attack to controllers at theGeorgetown tower, who notified Guyanese officials. Back atthe airstrip, survivors of the attack sought cover and protection forthe night.

While Ryan’s delegation had prepared to board their aircraft, backat the compound Jim Jones had called the Jonestown communitytogether. He explained to them that someone on the plane was going

to kill Ryan, giving justification to people who wished to destroy thePeoples emple to attack them. Te “enemy” would then descendupon them and kill them mercilessly.

Jones’ followers had been expecting this. He had them living infear of an unnamed enemy and destroyer for many years. He had alsobeen preparing them for what he termed “revolutionary suicide” for

some time. Tey had even had a number of practice runs to preparethem for such an eventuality.

According to the official report, the carnage at Jonestown beganat about 5:00 pm as gunfire erupted at the airport.

Later that night while still out fishing, Newell was awakened inhis fish camp and arrested by Guyanese soldiers. Te soldiers told himthat Ryan, members of the news crew and emple members who hadbeen attempting to flee were attacked and killed at the airstrip as they

 were preparing to leave.

“Tey got us and took us to the police station and locked us up.Tey didn’t know if we had anything to do with the shooting atthe airstrip or whatever. We were in jail that night and morning,”

Newell said. According to FBI reports, Newell’s friend EddieCrenshaw was one of the shooters who helped assassinate Ryanon Jones’ order.

At noon, Nov. 19, 1978, soldiersbrought word that at least 400 people

were dead at Jonestown. “I told the guy

he was lying. I couldn’t believe it,”Newell said. “My heart just sank. As theday went by, the body count got higher.”

While Newell and others were out on the boat and the Ryan partyattacked, Jones had ordered what he called “revolutionary suicide.”Buckets of grape-flavored Flavor Aid (not Kool-Aid, a genericized

trademark) laced with cyanide poison and various tranquilizers werebrought out to the emple members.

Jones ordered them to drink it, saying soldiers would soon cometo torture their children and elderly at Jonestown.

“Had I known or thought something like that was going tohappen, I would have tried to get my family out,” Newell said.

Audio tapes left behind showed that it was not a mass suicide. While some people “drank the Kool-Aid,” others were coaxed by Jones to make their children drink the deadly drink. Children can beheard crying and gagging as the liquid was forced down their throats.

Te hesitation is obvious. Jones tells emple members they are

going too slowly. A few agree with him, but most are heard arguing inthe background, refusing his orders.

“Stop this nonsense!” Jones yells. “You’re exciting your children!”

Newell and other survivors view what happened as sheer murder.“You had three choices. Either you drank the stuff or you got injected

At the end of the 45 minute tape Jones is heard to say,“ake our life from us. We laid it down. We got tired. We didn’tcommit suicide; we committed an act of revolutionary suicideprotesting the conditions of an inhumane world.”

A few of the lucky ones were able to escape into the jungle, butmost didn’t even try. “If you got out of Jonestown and tried to runthrough the jungle, you wouldn’t know where to go,” Newell said.

“Jones always told us it was full of poisonous frogs and snakesand panthers, which was true.”

Eventually Newell and his brother Cleveland Jr. were eventually

released from prison, but Newell wasn’t free. Not only did he suffersurvivor’s guilt, losing twelve members - almost his entire family -in the jungle, he was marked with the stigma of being a member ofthe now infamous Peoples emple.

Jones was a true antichrist – a man who put himself up to takethe place of Christ. oward the end, he said he was their Messiahand those that believed his lie followed him into the jungle, never

to return. One recurring characteristic of the false prophets is that they are

careful to speak pleasing, positive, and flattering words. Jeremiahcondemned the false prophets who were always saying, “Peace, peace;

when there is no peace” ( Jer. 6:14; 8:11). Jeremiah also said,“Te prophets prophesy falsely . . . and My people love to have it so”( Jer. 5:31). Even though Jeremiah was a true prophet of the Lord, the false prophets were rewarded by the king and Jeremiah was castinto a dungeon ( Jer. 38:6).

Jesus predicted false prophets would arise and mislead many.If Jesus were telling the truth, then we should expect such falseprophets to rise up, and be successful in misleading people.

“Many false prophets will appear and deceive many people,” Matthew 24:11, ISV

Te apostles instructed believers to be diligent in faith andunderstanding of Christian teachings, in order to discern falseprophets when they arise (2 Pet. 1:10; 1:19–2:1; 1 John 4:1).

Te instructions

of the apostles wereechoed by HerbertNewell when he said,“Had we been inchurch and readingour Bible, we would

have known that this was not somethingChristian-like orof God.”

withstanding trials and the key to restoring the joy of our salvation. It is  the most important thing a Christian can learn to do.

I truly believe if the body of Christ was really taughthow to genuinely worship, it would revolutionize the church.Noah worshiped the Lord and, as a result, a brand new creation

was born. Abraham built an altar and worshiped the Lord and a whole nation resulted. Moses worshiped the Lord and, because ofhis obedience, God freed an entire people from bondage. Men and

women who truly learn to worship can change the world.

True Worshipers Worship involves all of our mental, emotional and spiritual

faculties, but the specific place we worship and express our love tothe Lord is in our spirit. John 4:23-24 validates this, “Te hourcometh, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship theFather in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship

Him. God is Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Himin spirit and in truth.”

One of the definitions of the word joy  is “to join or to becomeone with.” Joy, then, is the result of the union and the communion ofour spirits. It’s the result of coming into God’s presence, catching onfire with His Love and being consumed by it.

Consequently, worship is not something we do just on Sundays orin church, but something we must learn to do every day, all day long.

Again, look at the lives of Moses, Elijah, Samuel, Jeremiah, Daniel,Isaiah, John and Paul. Tese men didn’t restrict their worship to justone day a week. No, they worshiped and loved the Lord continually, every day, all day long. And, as a result, some of them came to know

the Lord “face to face,” some weregiven incredible dreams and visions, and the glory of the Lord was seen inall of their lives.

Worshiping the Lord on a dailybasis does not preclude our having

more trials and temptations, but in fact necessitates it. Experiencingdeeper consecration to the Lord usually requires even more refining. Our crown is always gained through the cross. Te pattern seems

clear: first, we are approved of by God; then we are tempted by manytrials and tribulations; and finally, we receive our crown. If we knowhow to enter the Lord’s presence and worship Him in the midst ofour suffering, then we will receive“beauty for ashes” and the “oil of joyinstead of mourning.” (Isaiah 61:3)

Now more than ever before, we need to sanctify the Lord in theeyes of others. Tis simply means

we must rejoice in the middle ofour trials, so that Jesus will beglorified. Not hyping it up, butbecause of the intimacy we are experiencing with Him, letting that

genuine joy show forth. God’s Word promises that Jesus will neverleave us nor forsake us, but that He will be at our right hand helpingus through and bringing us to victory. If we really believe this, then

we must  walk it out. In other words, we must show others by ouractions exactly what we believe. Our only responsibility is to trust theLord enough during our trials to demonstrate His Life through us.

David Wilkerson comments on this in one of his recentnewsletters. He says that no matter where we are in our walk with theLord, we must “make a joyful noise unto Him.” (Psalm 66:1; 98:4-6)He says if we don’t, “the very stones [themselves] will cry out.”(Luke 19:40)

Humility

Te essence of worship, then, is really self-abasement andhumility. Tis does not mean putting ourselves down in a self-condemning way, but simply not thinking about ourselves at all .Humility is the ability to see ourselves as we truly are, which thenleaves us free to get excited about the triumphs of others and lovethem as God desires. Humility is putting Christ and what He

God’s Word promises

that Jesus will never

leave us nor forsake us,

but that He will be atour right hand helping

us through and bringing

us to victory.

Jesus is the full revelation of God’s glory and if He abides in us,that glory is going to shine forth in our lives also. Jesus wants toexpress His glory through us . We are His arms and legs. Now, others

might not see our face shining as they did Moses, but they should,at least, see something in our countenance that reflectsChrist’s character.

It’s interesting because the very firsttime Moses saw God’s glory was the firsttime he worshiped Him. (Exodus 34:6-8)

So, there is a connection between therevelation of His glory and worshipingHim. Experiencing God’s glory not onlychanges us - from glory to glory - it alsochanges our worship of Him.

In the temple, the place where God’s glory was manifested was at

the Incense Altar, which sat directly before the Mercy Seat. As we saidearlier, this altar was considered to be a part of the Holy of Holies, but actually stood in the Holy Place. It was called “the altar before theLord.” (Revelation 8:3) After the incense was offered, the ShekinahGlory would come forth from the Holy of Holies, commingle withthe perfumed cloud of incense, and then arise and fill the temple.Te priest would then fall on his face and worship the Lord.

Tis is a visual picture of what happens when we humbleourselves and worship the Lord at the Incense Altar of our hearts.

We not only become one spirit with Him, but the glory of God fillsthe temple of our body. In the perilous times ahead, Scripture tells usthat God’s glory will be our defense, our covering and our protection. His glory will shelter us from the intense trouble that is to come upon

the earth. Once again, God will put His pillar of cloud and fire overHis Church for comfort and for direction. “Te Lord will create uponevery dwelling place of Mount Zion and upon her assemblies, a cloudand smoke by day, and the shining of a flaming fire by night; forupon all the glory shall be a defense.” (Isaiah 4:5-6)

 Jesus is the full

God’s glory and if

He abides in us,that glory is going

to shine forth in

our lives also.

Walking with the Lord

Worship involves companionship, communion, fellowship, mutual delight and decision making. Tese are the things that build a

firm foundation so that we are able to “walk with the Lord,” share Hisheart and enjoy Him as a friend. Abel, Enoch, Noah and Abraham all“walked with the Lord.” (Genesis 5:22; 6:9) Each humbly sought Hispresence and the Lord rewarded them by revealing His glory.

As David Wilkerson puts it, “to have the Creator of the Universecall you His friend seems almost beyond human comprehension.”

Worship is the only place that a firm foundation for a “walkingrelationship” can be built. As Bob Sorge says, “We must develop asecret history with God before  He gives us a public one.”

Conclusion

In conclusion, if you have identified with some of the thingsthat have been shared in this article: if you, too, have lost the joy of

your salvation; if you, too, have never really understood what true“worship” is; and if you, too, have longed to be consumed in God’sLove and His presence, then I urge you to put into practice what itmeans to personally worship the Lord. I assure you it will change yourlife and become the most important part of your entire day.

I now understand what Psalm 65:4 means when it says,

“Blessed is the man whom Tou choosest and causeth to approachunto Tee; that he may dwell in Ty courts...” or, as the Livingranslation says, “What joy awaits us inside Your Holy emple!”Te Lord is waiting there to give us the “oil of joy” and the “gloryof His presence.” (Isaiah 61:3) Worship is the key to experiencingHis presence, to knowing the indescribable joy of our salvation, and toreflecting His glory. Isaiah 56:7 tells us that the Lord will, “Bring us toHis holy mountain and make us joyful...” Or as the Living translationsays, “Fill [us] with joy in [His] house of prayer.”

Again, worship is a two-way communication. We give the Lordour worship and our love. He then gives us His joy, His glory and, ofcourse, His Love. Worship flows from our love of Him; joy and glory

come from His Love towards us. Tus, regardless of what is goingon in our lives, if we choose to humble ourselves, worship and adoreHim, He will align our feelings with our faith choices, make His presence

known, and then, fill us with His joy. (Psalm 71) Tis is what gives ushope  - hope that He still cares and that He is intimately concernedabout every single detail of our lives.

Te Creator of the Universe, the One who designed us in the firstplace, has planned something far greater for those who seek Him withall their hearts. He tells us that only in His presence is true happiness;

only in His presence is complete fulfillment; and only in His presence is fullness of joy. (And, we don’t have to wait until we get to heaven inorder to taste this.) By learning to worship Him in the Spirit - not

just on Sundays in church, but privately at home - every day, we willbe able to experience the fulfillment and the joy that the world andeveryone in it is so desperately searching for, but very few seem tohave found.

ruly, private worship is the key to joy and happiness!

“Isa Ibn Maryam” or “al-Masih” is really a pseudo-Christ figure –an Antichrist.6

Follow Christ

So what does the Word record about being Christ’s follower? James writes that we are to be doers of the Word – not hearers only. But doing what?

Tere are neither rules nor set criteria because Jesus did away withthe bondage of the law. But Followers of the Way, as early Christians

were known, shared some characteristics that we might still expect to

see today. We might expect them to:

• Believe in Jesus as the only begotten Son of God and affirmPaul’s shorthand version of the Gospel. “How that Christ died

for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures…” 7

• Share the Gospel with others both in deliberate, planned waysas well as taking advantage of opportunities as they presentthemselves. “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and beready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you areason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:” 8

• Do everything from love. “Tou shalt love the Lord thy God withall thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. Tis is

the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it,Tou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.” 9 Jesus quotes Leviticus19:18, one of 613 commandments in the orah10, as His secondcommandment, bidding us to unconditionally love those wemeet in the same fashion that we love ourselves, with respect, understanding and generosity of spirit.

unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” 18

• Be prepared to suffer for our faith. “Whosoever will come after

me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.” 19

We won’t all be martyrs to take up our own crosses and follow  Jesus, but many will be! Tere are more Christians being martyred for Christ today than in Roman times!

Find the Way Forward

How do we find a way forward in the race that is set before us?20

Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes tothe Father but through Me.” 21

Tus, the answer is straightforward. Jesus is the Way. Jesus is theonly Way! We must be followers of the Way! By accepting Jesus infaith, we find the way to forgiveness of sins; reconciliation with God;and assurance of eternal life.

Yet how can we know that we are on the right path? How do weknow the Way… the true Way? How do we know that we are not onthe wrong path, the wide path that leads to destruction, no matterhow noble our intentions? o whom can we speak about directions?

Where can we find a map?

 Jesus Himself provides the answer:

“If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And yeshall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free..”

 John 8:31-32 KJV

o test that we have indeed found Te Way, Jesus, we need tocheck the only reliable source of information about Him: Te Wordof God!

Te Bible notes that while walking with two disciples on the roadto Emmaus: “ beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expoundedto them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.”22 18 Philippians 4:6-7

Follow the Way Forward Once you become a Follower of Jesus, persevere! Te apostle Paul

reminded imothy: “But you must continue in the things which you

have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learnedthem, and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is inChrist Jesus.” 24

When times are especially tough, as we are told they will be in theend times, it may be impossible to proactively preach the Gospel.

We may have to just stand. Tat might sound easy – just standing

your ground – but it is not when under attack by Satan and his worldly followers! Paul warned us what we will be up against:“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” 25

Our defense is based upon God’s armament, and Paul warns us toput it all on. Each piece of this divinely provided equipment is vital!

“Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye maybe able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, andhaving on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod withthe preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shieldof faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of

the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of theSpirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayerand supplication in the Spirit:”

Ephesians 6:13-18 KJV

Jesus has called us to follow Him. Alas, nearly 2,000 years ofreligious overlay may make that simple calling appear opaque,

complex and confusing. While the Way may seem difficult to findor follow at times, the Bible provides us His unambiguous, clear, inspired, practical and straightforward guidance. Hopefully, thisarticle will help de-mystify modern Christianity for Bible-believingfollowers of Christ.

HANCES ARE, Jesus isn’t who you think He is.No matter what you may have read before aboutthis first-century rabbi from Nazareth, there’s

a good possibility that you’ve been misinformed. In fact, maybe you’ve been wrong from the start about the mostamazing man who ever walked the surface of the earth.

Many people who knew Jesus understood Him

well enough to admire Him, to respect Him,and to love Him. Others were terrified of Him.Some of His own relatives said He was out of Hismind. But the politically and religiously intolerantleaders of first-century Israel hated Him. So theymurdered Him. But that wasn’t the end of the story. Not by a long shot.

Today, more than twenty centuries later, respectedBible scholars Dr. Chuck Missler and Dr. WilliamWelty bring Jesus of Nazareth to you in the mostunconventional way possible… by bringing Jesusof Nazareth to talk in His very own words aboutHimself, His purpose, His nature, and His mission.
