INTRODUCTION

PERSONALITY:

Personality can be defined as those inner , psychological characteristics that both determine and reflect how a person responds to his or her environment.

PERFORMANCE:

Performance can be defined as the level of act shown by an individual with respect to his or her environment.

Personality and performance

Personality played an important role in the person’s adjustment to life and an assessment of personality could be used to dict whether he would be a success or failure.This assessment of personality is visualised as performance and this can be further regarded as Evaluation of Personality.

Evaluation of personality

A good evaluation of a person’s development should include a formulation of how the child’s personality has developed and is now developing.It is an amazingly accurate system that helps to determine what kind of personality is required for a specific job

On the basis of such type of performance assessment or evaluation personalities can be of following two types:

Sick personality

Healthy personality

SICK PERSONALITIES

Sick personality is one in which there is a breakdown in the personality structure which results in poor personal and social adjustments.Scientists regarded such a person as “disturbed”, “disordered” , and in severe cases , “neurotic” or “psychotic”

FEATURES OF SICK PERSONALITY

Sick personalities represent unhealthy self – image, is riddled with feelings of inferiority and insecurity.

Such persons tend to limit themselves socially. They tend to be shy and uncomfortable in social settings

They are painfully self-conscious, self critical, and hyper sensitive.

They doubt love when it comes their way , tending to be over jealous and possessive with their mates.

They overreact with criticism and have difficulty in accepting praise.

CAUSES OF PERSONALITY SICKNESS

The causes fall under two categories:PhysicalPsychological

Physical: some physical conditions may in part atleast account for the way a person reacts in different situations and for the kind of adjustments he makes to life in general.

It can be explained as under:

A temporary upset in body homeostasis, due to headache or a digestive disturbance,may lead to temporary pattern of maladjustive behavior, when it ends the person reverts to his former pattern of adjustments

A persistent illness often effects the characteristic pattern of adjustment to life.

Brain damage at any age can lead to sick personality

PSYCHOLOGICAL

The fundamental cause of psychological personality sickness is the “self-rejection”.

Self-rejection: it is a phase when person is unable to gratify his needs and desires because of personal limitations of obstacles in his environment.

Those persons who are judged to be well adjusted.

They are so judged because they are able to perform efficiently.
