    Extraversion :

is characterized by being outgoing, talkative, high onpositive affect (feeling good), and in need of external

    stimulation.Neuroticism/Stability neuroticism or emotionality is

characterized by high levels of negative affect such asdepression and anxiety. Neuroticism, according to

Eysenck's theory, is based on activation thresholds in

the sympathetic nervous system or visceral brain. This

is the part of the brain that is responsible for the fight-or-flight response in the face of danger.

Professor Lester, formerly of Cambridge University

and now professor of psychology at the Richard

Stockton College in New Jersey, said: "Caffeine

production has been hypothesized to be associatedwith low national levels of neuroticism.

"Caffeine appears to stimulate the sympathetic

division of the autonomic nervous system and so may

be ingested more by people who have low levels ofsympathetic activation in order to raise their levels.''

    Theory of causes:

    Jungian theory of psychic energy

    Eysenck's theory of temperament

Biological factorsThe relative importance of nature versus environment in determining the

level of extroversion is controversial and the focus of many studies. Twin studiesfind a genetic component of 39% to 58%. In terms of the environmental component,

the shared family environment appears to be far less important than individual

environmental factors that are not shared between siblings.
