Personification

“Skies are crying”

There is a personification because it gives the sky human qualities.

This device adds impact to the song because it further develops the mood.

Also by giving it human qualities it helps us relate.

Hyperbole

“Like I’m made of glass”

“Like I’m made of paper”

This is a hyperbole because it is exaggerating how delicate she is.

I think the author used this device because it also has imagery – we can see how delicate she feels.

Simile

“Like a skyscraper”

This is a simile because she is comparing herself to a skyscraper using the word like.

This device adds impact because it is giving the song a deeper meaning, so you have to think.

Metaphor

“All my windows still are broken”

This is a metaphor because she is comparing herself to broken windows without using like or as.

This device adds impact because it is giving us more imagery and description about she feels on the inside.

Repetition

“Like a skyscraper”

“Like a skyscraper”

“Like a skyscraper”

“Like a skyscraper”

“Like a skyscraper”

This is repetition because the same phrase is being said over and over again (5 times).

This device adds impact to the song because it emphasizes her point and it hammers it into your mind so you won’t forget.

I chose this song because it has a lot of meaning and it’s very poetical. Even though this song sounds very depressing I also think it is mixed in with hopefulness.

At the beginning of the song it says “skies are crying I am watching catching teardrops in my hands”. This shows when she says “catching teardrops in my hands” that she also can relate to the sky – who is crying. So right away we know that she is feeling sad about something so this is her obstacle that she is facing.

As the song builds it is almost like she is gaining confidence and realizing that no one has the right to put her down “go on and try to tear me down I will be rising from the ground”. This is when she starts to believe in herself.

Then finally she says “all my windows still are broken but I’m standing on my feet,” which basically is a conclusion to this story , she is hurt but not broken so there is still hope for her!

Because of these reasons I think the theme is as hopeless as things may seem if you believe in yourself nobody will be able to put you down.
