Speech Title: Recycling

EXCITE:1. Good morning to everyone! I am so enthused to be able to talk to you about a

topic that hits home for everybody.2. Show the recycling sign.

LAUNCH:1. I believe that every home should have a recycling bin.2. Recycling is crucial to the world!

a. Almost half of the average home's energy consumption is used for heating.

3. Recycling in my homea. I was always taught from a young age on the products to be

recycled and it helped me for my future.7. Today I will be sharing how you can begin recycling in your own life, the benefits

(global and personal), opposing viewpoints, and some crucial facts. 8. “I will also be providing some time to answer any questions that you may, so

please keep them handy and ask at the appropriate time.”

RELATE:1. How many people recycle within their homes?2. Recycling will help you with being a more environmentally friendly person and

feel better about yourself. 3. If we, as a country, do not ban together to change the massive carelessness for

recycling we will be in a world of trash.4. “If today is a typical day on planet earth, humans will add fifteen million tons of

carbon to the atmosphere, destroy 115 square miles of tropical rainforest, create seventy-two square miles of desert, eliminate between forty to one hundred species, erode seventy-one million tons of topsoil, add twenty-seven hundred tons of CFCs to the stratosphere, and increase their population by 263,000.”

5. Are we ready to watch this beautiful planet fall apart while in our hands?

PERSUADE:1. Statement of the Problem

a. Not healthy for Humansi. Humans do not care about the environmentii. Setting a bad example for future generationsiii. Uneducated about the products that can/ cannot be

recycled.

b. Not healthy for the Environmenti. “Recycling 1 ton of paper saves 17 mature trees, 7,000

gallons of water, 3 cubic yards of landfill space, 2 barrels

Page 2: Persuasive Speech

of oil, and 4,100 kilowatt-hours of electricity — enough energy to power the average American home for five months.” A ton of paper is 2,000 lbs. Which I’m sure each one of

us has gone through that amount if not double that in our lives so far.

ii. Killing the rainforestiii. Polluting the ozone layer

c. Not beneficial for the economyi. If we continue on this path many states are going to need to

spend more money to create a new landfill because they are running out of room. In fact,…

ii. “At least 22 states have less than 10 years of landfill capacity left.”iv. “Recycling programs, when designed properly, are cost-

competitive with landfills and incinerators…”2. The Plan:

a. I believe that the best way to prevent the erosion of the planet is by learning, experiencing, and changing.

3. Meeting the need:a. Understanding how to execute this plan will be crucial. b. First we must be educated on the topic.c. Learning

i. teaching children in schools across the world why they need to recycle

ii. Keeping a recycling bin in every house hold.d. Next we need to execute the plan and spread the word by,

experiencingi. Each family should be a participant in a recycling group

that will get the news out.

e. Lastly, we should change!i. “Letting your faucet run for five minutes uses about as

much energy as letting a 60-watt light bulb run for 14 hours.”

ii. For example, if every American home would turn off the faucet while brushing their teeth or washing dishes we will continue to save energy.

iii. Changing our attitudes will be beneficial.4. Absolutely practical and easy to start

a. Complete within the household and in schoolingb. Will continue through an individuals whole lifec. No money required (actually will save you money in the long

run)5. Recycling through learning, experiencing, and changing is the best way.

Page 3: Persuasive Speech

a. “Instead, the United States has no effective national plan to eliminate or reduce waste.”

b. There is no plan that will provide benefits to the same extent.6. Argument:

a. We can recycle only 25 to 30% of our solid wastes.i. “This is not true because.. Twenty-five percent was

considered a maximum level in 1985. Today it should be considered a minimum, not a maximum. By continuing to build the reuse, recycling, and composting infrastructure and integrating the best features from the best programs—local and state—the nation as a whole can achieve 50% recycling by 2005.”

b. We have time to fix the problemi. FALSE!ii. “A recent government survey showed that at least 36

states are anticipating local, regional, or statewide water shortages by 2013.”

iii. We need to act now!7. Reinforcement:

a. Help the environmentb. Helping the wallets of the Americans.

i. I recycle aluminum cans in my own house and take them to the recycling center near my house. I will get a couple extra bucks every month.

c. Will raise self esteemi. keep people in a positive state of mindii. Americans feel like they are a part of something bigger

than themselves.

REITERATE:1. I would like to pause to allow anybody to ask questions. …….Thank you very much!

2. Today I spoke to you all about recycling.3. Please let me inform you that

a. This is a major problem. We are going to be in some serious trouble if we continue at this rate.

b. I believe that if every American adopted the plan of learning, experiencing, and changing about recycling we will be more successful and continue to have a beautiful planet.

c. Keep in mind that, “Americans go through 25 billion plastic bottles every year.”

d. Anybody can do it!ENERGIZE:

1. How do you get involved:

Page 4: Persuasive Speech

a. Adopt the plan of learning, experiencing, and changing.b. Pin the recycling list up on the refrigerator to know keep

yourself accountable.c. Get involved in your communityd. Start a recycling program somewhere that will be beneficial

(i.e. workplace, and/or school)

2. Please keep this beautiful planet along so that our generation as well as future generations may be able to have the same opportunities that we have been blessed with.

3. Thank you so much for listening and I hope I have been an inspiration for you to get involved and change.
