Perth Civitan Express Bob Burch, Engineer President’s Message
The parking signs are finally up along the parking lot at the hall. We have added two more handicapped parking spaces and marked the area along the building as a fire lane. Thanks go out to Peter McTavish for his help planning and installing the signs. We also re-ceived assistance from Gary Munroe of Mun-roe Electrical Service, Elliott St, Perth who
marked the underground hydro so we didn’t electrocute ourselves installing the posts. Val-ley Tools, Rogers Rd, Perth donated stainless steel bolts for the signs and marking paint for the layout. Rental Village, Drummond St, Perth, donated the use of a pounder to install the metals posts. We couldn’t have done it without you.
Bob Burch
Fellow Civitans, first of all Congratulations to our new Directors and thank you to those who were unsuccessful for letting your name stand! Big kudos to those Civitans who worked the Brown Shoe Mega Sale…..a very successful and busy weekend! The upcoming events are Relay for Life (don’t forget to register with Cancer Society) and the CHEO Breakfast……many hands make light work and all hands are needed. At the last meeting Past President Bonnie was presented with a “Navigator” Award. I thought that I would explain more about this award. Civitan’s board of directors charted a new course in 1987 by approving a “Flagship Pro-ject.” Even before the ground was broken for the new Civitan International Research Cen-ter in Birmingham, Alabama, clubs every-where began raising and sending money to help meet the million dollars a year commit-ment that had been made. As construction neared completion, word spread about the im-portant research and teaching programs un-derway at the center and soon the “Civitans at
the Helm” program was full steam ahead. The program is simple and Civitan Interna-tional recognizes clubs and districts whose fi-nancial support helps float the Flagship. There are four levels of participation, the first level being that of “Helmsman”. This level represents ten dollars per member per year, and this rate is low enough for any club to participate. In fact it is the “Helmsman” who keeps the ship steady and on course. The next level is called the “Navigator” and represents twenty-five dollars per member per year. At fifty dollars per member per year the club is awarded the banner patch signifying “Captain” At the top clubs and districts that average one hundred dollars per member per year are rec-ognized as “Admirals”. The Flagship program assists thousands of people with developmental disabilities and it couldn’t be done without the efforts of Civitans like you and me all over the world. Civitan Pauline Richards is taking care of the Kid’s Activity table for the CHEO breakfast and she is looking for donations of craft supplies (yarn, ribbon, felt scraps, or just about anything). She also would like clean 2 litre pop bottle, empty paper towel rolls and possibly dowelling
(that is the width of the opening of a 2 litre bot-tle) as she has some interesting crafts planned. Contact Pauline on 613-200-1994 or Jane on 613-267-5952 if you can help out.

Crew captains (this is the first person listed on the crew), please remember for Special Occasion bars to make sure the person who has their name on the licence is there before you start serving alcohol. If for some reason that person is not going to be there the entire time, they need to sign the licence and the other person who is going to assume responsibility has to print their
name and sign the licence as well (this should be outlined on the back of the licence). It is that person who is responsible to make sure no one takes alcohol outside and who will be notified by the bartenders if someone is intoxicated and will not be served any more liquor.

Theatre Project
The Relay for Life will be at the new Smiths Falls & District High School this year on Jun 7th, 7.00 pm to 7.00 am (or whenever you wish to leave). The new Smiths Falls High School is at 299 Percy St., Smiths Falls—behind the County Fair Mall. Civitan is still the corporate sponsor for this event with Lanark, Perth and Smiths Falls clubs providing the funding. Team members and anyone else wishing to walk a few laps with the Civitan team should meet at our home base shelter, which is blue and will be hopefully sporting our banner to make it easier to find. Either the Civitan banner or our team name banner "The Flower Powerful Perth Civitans". We will also all be wearing our yellow Civitan t-shirts and if you don't have
one and are not on the team, there should be extra shirts there for you to borrow for the evening. Please think about joining our team on Relay night. Feel free to get all
decked out in your favorite bell bottoms and Tye-Dyed accessories as well! Ken will be organizing the canteen at the Relay and will likely be looking for some help as well.

Brown Shoe Parking & BBQ
The event is over and we are totalling the monies raised for the Relay for Life. The BBQ alone earned about $1,000. We had the right amount of volunteers so everyone had some responsibility. A good time was had by all.
Bill Kelleher Thanks to everyone who helped out to park cars. I’m sure the members who have never directed traffic before learned about putting up with heat, rain and driver attitude. Everything was han-dled like pros, you have my heartfelt thanks.
Splash Pad Donation We met at Conlon Farm with the Splash Pad Committee to present the $10,000 donation. Perth Courier reporter Laurie Wright was there to take photos for the paper and Jane Biddulph was there to capture this photo. The rain had started at the time the photo shoot was scheduled so it went ahead. Some members were a few seconds late and missed being part of the photo. See the article in the upcoming Perth Courier for the details.
