Wild About Perton in SeptemberRemember the nursery rhyme about little Miss Muffit being frightened away by a spider? Well, for most of us spiders are seldom noticed for much of the year except in the autumn. Then they seem to grow ever larger in the many webs which crisscross our gardens. Spiders are all around us in their many millions. Now there’s a thought to put the frighteners on most people. Few people like spiders and for the majority they are creatures to fear, bordering on naked terror. But in the autumn their dew-bejewelled webs can be as uplifting a sight as any in the British landscape. In contrast the same black and dust laden webs in the garage can look sinister and chilling.So why do most of us loath spiders? There is a theory that it is something to do with their legs. Spiders and their close relatives, the Harvestmen, have eight legs, which seem to move independently of each other. Humans it seems, can’t work out where each leg will go next so fear of the unknown takes over. Yet our fear defies logical explanation. Spiders are in no way a threat to humans, spreading no disease, feeding and controlling other creatures such as flies that people want gone from their homes.So the long legged House Spider should be the most welcome of guests. Male House Spiders are short lived and are most likely seen dashing over the carpet in search of a mate in the late summer and autumn. Whereas female House Spiders may live for some years, and when their eggs are laid they protect them until the spiderlings hatch. When you’re next in the garden take a close look at the Garden Spider. Garden Spiders produce the orb webs which stretch across our gardens at this time of the year. You’ll see that they are quite attractively marked with a distinctive cross on the abdomen. A female Garden Spider will lay its eggs in a secluded spot and then stay with them until she dies in late autumn, never seeing the spiderlings which hatch the following spring.So, little Miss Muffit there is no need to run away.Wild About Perton leads a wildlife walk every first Saturday each month starting from Perton Library at 2.00 PM.

A Word From Your MPOne of the highlights of my summer to date has been getting to spend time with several of my younger constituents. Over the past couple of months, we have welcomed 13 work experience students between my Codsall and Westminster offices.

I was incredibly impressed by the calibre of the students, who were willingly taking time out of their summer holidays to shadow me, their local MP. While we have been offering placements for local students for a number of years now, we only set up an official scheme – driven partially by the high volume of applicants – in April, this year. Details of how to apply are currently available on my website at: www.gavinwilliamson.org

Not every MP takes on work experience students, but it is something that matters a lot to me. I was first inspired to become an MP when I took a school trip to Parliament. I therefore know how important personal experience can be in helping us to determine what we want to do in life. I really hope that this new scheme will provide young people in South Staffordshire with the opportunity to learn more about politics and enable them to find out firsthand what is involved in being an MP.

In addition to learning about their MP’s daily duties and office operation, the students are invited to take part in a broad range of activities. When Parliament is in session, the Westminster-based work experience students are given the opportunity to watch proceedings in the Chamber or be present at an open Committee session. During the Summer Recess - taking place now - work experience students in Codsall are able to accompany me as I go about my constituency duties, attending non-confidential meetings and making visits to local residents and businesses.

These visits and community activities make up a large part of my weekly routine, both during recess and, to a lesser extent, when Parliament is in session. Indeed, this September I will be attending a litter pick in Perton. I started the litter picks upon being elected, in 2010. They have since become regular events and the local community has really got behind them, providing much needed help in many different villages. If you are interested in attending the Perton litter pick, we will be meeting at 9.30am, on September 21st, at the Perton Civic Centre. Everyone is welcome and I very much hope to see you there.

We LOVE Pilates...Following the launch of a new Body Control Pilates Studio in Codsall, we speak to owner and trainer Lucy McBride to find out more about a form of exercise that many celebrities swear by...Who is Pilates suitable for?Pilates is for everyone – no matter what age, how flexible you are or your level of fitness, you can reap its benefits. It is one of the only exercise programs that doesn't discriminate between weight, age, strength or flexibility.What results can you expect from Pilates?Pilates is all about developing the perfect balance of strength & flexibility; but helps with posture and body tone along the way. How is it different to other forms of exercise, like yoga?

Pilates was developed in the 20th and draws on the most effective features of a variety of practices; including yoga, self-defence, weight training, skiing and even circus training. I’m not sure group exercise is for me – can I still do Pilates?Absolutely – you can book private classes for some one-to-one tuition until you are confident enough in your abilities to join a class suitable for your level.

PERTON GARDENING CLUB SEPTEMBER IN THE GARDEN

As many of the summer bedding plants and hardy perennials will start dying offthis month you will need to remove any dead growth to keep borders tidy to avoid the risk of disease. Dispose of any diseased materials but compost or recycle the rest.Some seed heads can be left to provide food and shelter for birds and wildlife, they will also look attractive when covered by frost later on. Collect any seed to be saved from hardy annuals, compost plants.Stock up on spring bulbs this month to get the best specimens and the widest choice, always choose firm bulbs that don t have any sign of mould. Plant as soon as possible except for tulips, these should not be planted until November to prevent them from becoming diseased.Stake and cut back tall shrubs to minimize wind damage. Lift and divide congested perennials, discard woody centres and replant healthy outer portions.Empty the greenhouse and give it a good clean ready for overwintering tender plants and check that the heating system is working.Harvest main crop potatoes, dry and store. Any damaged ones should be used immediately Lift and dry onions and shallots once leaves start to die back. Keep on picking runner beans and sweetcorn.

Words of Wisdom from Rev Julia Cody

“ Do you ever wish you could just have 5 minutes peace and quiet - time for yourself?! I imagine that most of us, whether we’re feeling the pressures of work; the demands of family; facing one of life’s great challenges;

or simply seeking to do our best in the busyness of life, crave those moments of space... peace... quiet... time out... solitude... time to gather our thoughts... to think - or perhaps not think... time simply to be... even to cry, letting out all the pent up stuff... time to offer our thoughts and prayers.Maybe we can help. From the beginning of September the church building will be open from 9.30am - 4pm, Mondays-Fridays, offering a place of peace and quiet. We’d love it to become a resource for all in the village, whether you have any faith, or none. The church will be open and available, you can simply drop in for a few precious minutes of time for yourself, perhaps while you’re out and about in the village, or stay as long as you’d like. Please come in, sit, think, rest, ponder, pray, light a candle, write a prayer and leave it so we can continue to pray for you and those you love. There will be folks around, but no one will ask questions or invade your space, unless you’d value chatting.

The Church At Perton is your church, and my hope is all feel welcome and at home. Rev Julia Cody

Tips from Your Local PGA ProAt Perton Park Golf Club

DON'T FLIP THE HANDS At some point in the swing, your hands will, in fact, release. But forcing your hands to flip over is never a good idea because it leads to all sorts of inconsistent shot directions and ball flights. Any manipulating

of a free-flowing swing is a detriment to your ability to swing the club freely on an arc. I want you to be more aware of how your body is turning through the shot and use your body to influence the direction the golf ball flies, not necessarily the hands.When I see a lot of hand action, it's usually because they're trying to manipulate their ball flight. That's a big no-no! The truth in slice-fixing (or hook-fixing, for the matter) is understanding what actually happens at the moment of truth. The club face is what primarily determines the initial direction the ball flies. The path is what influences the spin axis to either the left or right, meaning, you can easily hit slices and hooks with a square club face relative to the target line at impact. I know, I've seen many of my students do it over again. The relationship the club face has with the path the club head travels on is of utmost importance. To hit a fade, which starts to the left of the target and curves to the right, you have to align the club face to the left of the target and swing on a path that's even more to the left! So many times, I've seen people assume they need to align their club face open to the target line and swing across it from outside-inside the target line. When you do that, what do you think happens? Yep, a lot of push slices and hosel rockets.In order to hit a fade, for instance, always start by aligning the club face so it's aiming where you want the ball to start, which in this case is left of the target. Then, you need to make sure the path of the club head is further to the left than the face is aligned. And, get this, even though the club face is open to the path, it's closed relative to the target line! That, folks, is one of the biggest

misconceptions I've seen from golfers who struggle with shaping their shots. To hit a draw, you do the same thing in reverse. Start by aligning the face in the initial direction you want the ball to go, which is to the right of the target line, and proceed to swing the club on a path that's even further to the right than the angle of your club face Do that, and you'll hit draws all day long! Check out the chart to see more.
