INSTRUMENTATION Piccolo Flute 1 + 2 Oboe Bassoon Clarinet in Bb 1 + 2 Bass Clarinet in Bb Alto Sax 1 + 2 Tenor Sax Baritone Sax Trumpet in Bb 1 + 2 + 3 Horn in F 1 + 2 Trombone 1 + 2 + 3 Euphonium Tuba Percussion (6 players) Timpani Percussion 1 [low tom, suspended cymbal, hi-hat, chimes] Percussion 2 [bass drum] Percussion 3 [tam-tam, chimes, snare drum] Percussion 4 [bells, chimes] Percussion 5 [vibraphone, chimes] PERFORMANCE NOTES All trills are half-step trills. The opening 11 “bars” should take approximately 5 seconds each. This is at the discretion of the conductor and does not need to be exact. The wind players make a “shhh” sound to create ambiance. The black note-heads indicate a “click of the tongue”. Performers should translate that sound as they please (within reason) in order to create an otherworldly and supernatural sound. The conductor should initiate the tongue-click down the center of the band and the performers are to ripple from the center point to the edges to create a sense of moving sound on stage. Immediately after “clicking” the performers should resuming the “shhh” at piano. These methods should be applied to measure 99 as well. At 35’ the instrumentalists should blow audibly through their instruments, creating a whooshing sound without sounding their horn. At “Lurking” a typical beat begins. Some players will hiss at forte before fading out to nothingness. The trumpets and horns at 40’ are the first to play a boxed-notation figure. They should execute the given notes in the given order while accelerating from slow to a fast flurry. Each performer does this at their own pace which should continue the otherworldly feel. The saxes and vibraphone at measure 38 execute the same boxed notation, with the correct pitches in the correct order, however pacing is not specified, simply the text “mysterious”. The performers can choose any speed they like as long as it doesn’t interfere with the other textures (again at the discretion of the conductor). Dynamics should be followed. Starting at measure 128 the low winds and low brass are instructed to “stagger breathe” their long held note this means decrescendoing to nothing, taking a breath, and crescendoing back to the appropriate dynamic while another player holds their pitch. Depending on the size of the ensemble this can mean stagger breathing within a section of multiple players, or between instrumental groups as able in the set-up of the ensemble. At measure 176, much of the ensemble is marked with the same boxed notation with the descriptor “increasingly chaotic”. While maintaining a good sound, playing the right notes, and following the specified dynamics, the performer can translate this however they choose. If able, performers can utilize some extended techniques such as flutter tonguing if appropriate. It should be stressed that at the beginning of the figure the chaos should be minimal, so that by the end of the 6 bars, chaos can rage on. Transposing Score

PROGRAM NOTE Across the United States mysterious beast are sighted every year. From a Nessie-like creatures in the Chesapeake Bay and Lake Powell, AZ to a Giant Killer Octopus in Oklahoma and a Winged Alligator-Snake in Washington State, these beasts have enraptured our land and captured our imagination. The question of “what lies beneath that body of water” haunts us and the unexplained phenomena witness can only be attributed to the presence of such mythical creatures. These wondrous beasts enhance our country’s rich history. The answer the unanswerable and inspire awe in believers and skeptics alike. They are America’s mythology, supernatural, and tall-tales all wrapped up into a legend that will live for years to come.
