M A G A Z I N E

FROM THE EDITOR This is a short issue, I will go ahead and tell you that,

partially on my half because I’ve been so busy, and partially

because of a lack of response from ad partners. I’ve been very

busy indeed, which is why I’ve now decided to put Petal and

OBSCURUS out bi-monthly. I have my blog of course, I’m working

on re-opening Lunar Deer and getting everything done for that, I

also have OBSCURUS Magazine, and I’m now the fashion columnist

for my city’s newspaper, and work too but I could hardly call it

so because I’m lucky to get two days within two weeks, which

isn’t cutting it so I’ve also been looking for another job!

I’m not angry at the lack of response from ad partners, but

I would like to reiterate that this is a fashion magazine, I

hope to have a printing platform by the end of this year for it,

and I am very serious about this and have big expectations for

it. So please, if I’ve contacted you and we’ve made an agreement

to be ad partners or I propose the idea to you, take it and at

least send me something when the time comes! This isn’t just

some hobby to me that can be easily cast aside.

Hope everyone is having a lovely Autumn so far (or Spring

in the Southern Hemisphere!)

xox,

Stephanie

twiceshy.

A great handful of the Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed here, it’s

home to some of the most breathtaking and untouched scenery in the

world, it’s also home to a lot, and I do mean a lot of sheep, and oh

yeah, Twiceshy designers Hanna and Dylan live here too! Straight

out of New Zealand, this dynamic duo is one of keep your eyes one

with their crisp and artfully crafted designs!

A TALE OF TWO

DESIGNERS Subjects// Hanna + Dylan

Occupation// owners of Twiceshy (the Label)

PM: So, Hannah and Dylan, tell us about yourselves that we can't find in any

"about me" section.

H+D: Myself (Hannah) and Dylan are 20 and 21 year old self-taught designers from

Whangarei, New Zealand. We met when I was 14 and Dylan was 15 and are set to be

married in Feb next year. We are both extremely driven people with myself being a

trained Graphic Designer and Dylan a trained Automotive Technician but both of

our passions lie with design and fabrication.

PM: What initially inspired both of you to get together and collaborate

Twiceshy?

H+D: We are both very interested in fashion, in particular street style so

naturally we wanted to combine our passions into one creative outlet. I (Hannah)

am more of a creative sort and love to come up with concepts and ideas whereas

Dylan is much more practical and gets things done. We balance each other out

well.

PM: What's the story behind the label's unique name?

H+D: There isn’t too much of a story behind the name of Twiceshy. It was

something that when Dylan suggested it out loud just clicked.

PM: Where do each of you draw your inspiration from when you're at the drawing

board thinking of new designs? I get an almost care-free, tropical feel from the

products myself.

H+D: Our label is hugely influenced by street style both nationally and

internationally. We love New Zealanders understated attitude that comes across

through our designers and draw a lot of inspiration from that. We are also

greatly influenced by bloggers, models and other designers. We spend A LOT of

time browsing the net.

PM: I've never been to New Zealand, ever, but I really want to go someday. So if

I were to go, where should I definitely go?

H+D: You would love it here, New Zealand is a truly beautiful country. I would

recommend taking the time out to visit the South Island in the winter or visit

the beaches in Northland in the summer most, beaches in New Zealand are only 1-2

hours away no matter where you live which is handy!

Page 6: Petal Magazine: SEPT/OCT 2013

PM: Would you both say you have as unique of a style as the label itself (don't

be shy!)?

H+D: That’s a tricky one, I guess in a way our label is a direct reflection of

our own personal tastes in both fashion and lifestyle. We are both big fans of

clean, fresh designs and we try to portray this throughout our designs.

PM: If you could collaborate with any model, blogger or designer out there, who

would it be and why?

H+D: That’s a tricky one! There are so many amazing influential and talented

people out there. If we were going to pick a blogger I would

say Victoria Törnegren, I adore her simplistic take on fashion. For a model I

would love to work with Zippora Seven, she has such feminine edge to her look

(similar to a young Kate Moss) which photographs beautifully! And for a Designer

I love the work of Millie Loves Min, Cameo, May and Bec & Bridge, it would be

amazing to work with any of the talented designers behind those labels!

PM: Where's one place you both really want to travel to?

H+D: If it had to be one I would say New York, that place gives me serious

wanderlust!

PM: Twiceshy sure has gained a hefty following! So where do you see the label in

5 years? In 10?

H+D: We are so blessed to have gained the following we have today. It is really

humbling to see people appreciate the hard work you have put into a label. In 5

years we aim to be regularly attending NZFW with our own independent shows and in

stores worldwide and in 10 years who knows but we can’t wait to find out!

PM: And last but not least, an answer for your future interns and assistants! How

do you take your coffee/tea?

H+D: Haha! If you intern for Twiceshy you will get much more exciting work than

the tea run!

And now, a sneak peek of the up-coming Spring 2013 collection!

Not only is this stylish fox a fashion blogger,

but she also owns Waiste Clothing as well.

Miss Sara from across the pond is this month’s

blogger, who’s going to give you a glimpse into

herself, her brand, and her impeccable personal

style!

THE INTERVIEW Subject// Sara Thomas

Occupation// fashion blogger and owner of Waiste Clothing

PM: So miss Sara, please tell us a bit about yourself that we won’t find in any

“about me” blurbs!

ST: My name is Sara, I run a brand and a blog called WAISTE. I’ve got a black

fluffy cat called Herschy, which I like to talk to and pretend he can talk back.

PM: Not only is your clothing line, Waiste, amazing, but as a fashion blogger

your personal style is impeccable. Would you say that you’d always been a stylish

little thing or was it more of a sluggish evolution?

ST: Well, I think I’ve always wanted to look a little bit different from everyone

else, and I’ve always loved fashion ever since I could dress up in my Nana’s

clothes, but I feel like in recent years, and when I started my blog that I have

found my own style properly, rather than just dressing like a crazy person, which

was what my teenage years were spent doing.

PM: Speaking of Waiste, what started that? What inspired you to create a line of

customized, unique denim pieces?

ST: I was a little fed up with the same old denim brads/customized denim out

there that I thought I’d create my own. I’ve always customized my own clothing so

I thought it was the next step for me as a designer, and now it’s evolved to

WAISTE vintage too!

PM: With the recent “break in” at Buckingham Palace, if you were to ever find

your way into the place, what do you think you’d do? Personally I’d head straight

to the fridge and then go look for the royal pooches!

ST: Dress up in all the beautiful gowns and jewels of course! Then walk down the

staircase and run through all the rooms pretending it was my house.

PM: What would you say inspires you most? Not only for Waiste, but in your

personal life as well.

ST: I’m definitely a bohemian girl at heart, I love anything from the 60s and

70s, and amazing women like Stevie Nicks and Pamela Des Barres, I would love the

lifestyle they had! I just want to move to LA or San Francisco so badly!

PM: If you could team up with any designer or model in the world, who would it be

and why?

ST: Model-wise I’d love the team up with Abbey Lee Kershaw, she has insane

personal style and is a massive inspiration to me!

PM: One a scale of 1-10, how crazy would you say a day in the life of Sara is?

ST: Dependent on how many orders I have/if I’m going partying I’d say always at

least a 6-10. I like to work hard and play hard!

PM: Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years? And where do you see Waiste

within those time frames as well?

Page 15: Petal Magazine: SEPT/OCT 2013

ST: Well, I’ve just launched the start of my vintage collection, which I’m so

excited about, and is something I wanted to do since I set up WAISTE, so I hope

that develops and grows, I want to have my own studios and team, and to bring out

WAISTE own label too, and get that stocked on all my favorite sites. Dream big!

PM: And last but not least, which do you prefer, coffee or tea? And how do you

take it? You know, in case a future assistant of yours is reading this!

ST: It was a close one but teat of course! (I am British after all) milky with

one sugar please!

Flip forward to look through Sara’s three favorite looks off her Waiste blog!
