Peter and the PopesThe KeysIsaiah 22: 19-22 (Foreshadowing of the Pope)
"I will thrust you from your office and you will be cast down from your station and on thatday I will call my servant Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah, and I will clothe him with your robeand will bind your girdle on him and will commit your authority to his hand, and he shall
be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to the House of Judah; and I will place onhis shoulder the key of the House of David; he shall open, and none shall shut and heshall shut, and none shall open." The House of David is the Davidic kingdom, theDavidic dynasty. We know this because David has been dead for hundreds of years whenthis is happening in Isaiah 22. Look at all of the symbols of dynastic authority that arebeing given to this individual. First of all, an office. Second, a robe. Third, a throne andfourth, keys, the key of the House of David, these royal keys. Eliakim is a minister in thecabinet, but now he is being granted the Prime Minister's position. How do we know?Because he is given what the other ministers do not have, the keys of the kingdom, thekey to the House of David. That symbolized dynastic authority entrusted to the PrimeMinister and dynastic succession. Why? Because it's the key of David; it's the House ofDavid. Scott Hahn
Jesus , Peter and the Keys- Matt. 16:17-20
Jesus asked the apostles, Who do you say that I am.Peter replied, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. Jesus said, Blessed are you Simon, bar-Jonah, for flesh andblood has not revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven. And I say to you, You are
Peter, and upon this rock, I will build my Church and the gates of hell, shall not prevailagainst it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you shallbind on earth, shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth, you shall loosein heaven. ---When Jesus gives to Peter the keys of the kingdom, Peter is receiving thePrime Minister's office, which means dynastic authority from the Son of David, Jesus, theKing of Israel, but also an office where there will be dynastic succession. Scott Hahn
-Peter and his successors, the Popes, will rule over the Church. Peters profession offaith, that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, is an example of Peters authority to
understand and proclaim faith and morals. -Jesus promised Peter the keys to theKingdom, (the keys are a symbol of authority). He who carries the key, has a right toadmit or to exclude others.

Peter- The Rock You are Peter, and upon this rock, I will build my Church and the gates of hell shall
not prevail against it Christ spoke in Aramaic and the original Cephas, or Kepha means stone or
rock, which we interpret, Peter. Kepha at that time was never used as a proper name at that time.
Jesus only gives Peter a new name. Jesus said He would make Peter, the rock, upon whom He would
found His Church. As a founder of a building hold up, supports, and preserves the building. Peter was
to hold the same office of Christs Church. The Church will never be defeated by Satan, gates of hell.Peter Appointed Head and Shepherd of the Church (Jn. 21:15-17)
When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon, son of John, do you love me
more than these? He said to him, Yes, Lord, you know that I love you. He said to him, Feed my
lambs. He then said to him a second time, Simon, son of John, do you love me? He said to him, Yes,
Lord, you know that I love you. He said to him, Tend my sheep. He said to him the third time, Simon,
son of John, do you love me? Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, Do you love
me? and he said to him, Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you. Jesus said to him,
Feed my sheep.
-By this Christ entrusted to Peter the whole flock, thus making him the Chief Shepherd. The lambs are
the faithful, and sheep are the pastors, bishops, and priests. Jesus the Good Shepherd acts in the
person of the pope. -Christ appointed Peter the visible head of the Church.
-He is the father (papa- pope) to the people of God. He is the head of the family of God.
-Three acts of love, makes up for three denials. Third act in Greek is agape- unconditional unto death.
Peter Exercised His Primacy (At least 10 ways)
1. Always first in the lists of Apostles. Matthew called him the first Apostle, but he was neither first inage or in election for Our Lord. He therefore meant in honor and authority. 2. Peter proposed the
election of a new apostle to replace Judas. 3. He preached the first sermon on Pentecost. 4. He
admitted the first converts from Judaism (Acts 2:38-41) as well as paganism (Acts 10:5) 5. Peter worked
the first miracle (Acts 3:6-8) 6. He meted out the first punishment (Acts 5: 1-6) 7. Visited the churches
first (Acts 31-32) 8. Cast out a heretic (Acts 8:19-20) 9. At the Council of Jerusalem, when he spoke all
submitted (Acts 15) 10. Of all the early churches established by the Apostles, the Church of Rome was
highest rank. It was the See of Peter.
Quo Vadis Domine?- Where are you going Lord? Jesus responds, To be crucified in Rome.
Peter is crucified upside on Vatican Hill in Rome. Bones of Peter found below altar under ground.
Peter and the Popes
Name Change
The practice arose when
a pagan convert to
Christianity became
Pope and changed his
name from Mercury
(after the pagan Roman
god) to John II in 533AD.

Peter and the Popes
Chair of PeterThe Feast of the Chair of St. Peter is celebrated every year on Feb. 22nd.
The word Cathedra means chair. There is believed to be a real wooden chair
which Peter and his successors use to be seated when presiding.
The Bishop of Rome is the Successor of Peter.
Popes teach and speak Ex-Cathedra From the Chair of Peter. The Cathedral of Rome is St. John Lateran, the Popes Cathedral, not St. Peters Basilica.
PopesThere have been 265 popes up to Pope Benedict. All 32 popes up to 312AD were martyred.
In the history of the Church there has been more than one person at one time, who claimed to be
pope (antipope). At those times, it was eventually proven who the real pope was, though before
proven it confused the people.
InfallibilityI will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you shall bind on earth, shall be
bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth, you shall loose in heaven. ( Matt. 16:17-20)
Does This Mean the Pope Cannot Sin and He is Perfect?
Only God Himself is perfect. Infallibility does not mean the pope is perfect. He is a sinner just like
all of us. Blessed Pope John Paul II used to go to confession everyday.
Definition of InfallibilityCCC #891 "The Roman Pontiff, head of the college of bishops, enjoys this infallibility in virtue of his
office, when, as supreme pastor and teacher of all the faithful - who confirms his brethren in the
faith he proclaims by a definitive act a doctrine pertaining to faith or morals. . . . The infallibility
promised to the Church is also present in the body of bishops when, together with Peter's
successor, they exercise the supreme Magisterium," above all in an Ecumenical Council. When the
Church through its supreme Magisterium proposes a doctrine "for belief as being divinely
revealed," and as the teaching of Christ, the definitions "must be adhered to with the obedience of
faith." This infallibility extends as far as the deposit of divine Revelation itself.
Recent Papal Infallible Statements: 1854 Immaculate Conception and 1950 Assumption of Mary
"In this chair in which
he himself had sat,Peter in mighty
Rome commanded
Linus, the first
elected, to sit down.
After him, Cletus too
accepted the flock ofthe fold. As his
successor, Anacletus
was elected by lot.
Clement follows him,
well-known to
apostolic men. After
him Evaristus ruled
the flock without
crime. Alexander,
sixth in succession,
commends the fold toSixtus. After his
illustrious times were
completed, he
passed it on to
Telesphorus.
He was excellent,
a faithful martyr . .

Daily Prayer for the Pope
V. Let us pray for Benedict, our Pope.
R. May the Lord preserve him, and give himlife, and make him blessed upon the earth,
and deliver him not up to the will of his
enemies. [Ps 40:3]
Our Father, Hail Mary.
O God, Shepherd and Ruler of all Thy faithful
people, look mercifully upon Thy servant
Benedict, whom Thou hast chosen as
shepherd to preside over Thy Church. Grant
him, we beseech Thee, that by his word andexample, he may edify those over whom he
hath charge, so that together with the
flock committed to him, may he attain
everlasting life. Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
