EXPLORE YOUR CREATIVE POTENTIAL AT PETERS VALLEY SCHOOL OF CRAFT

Peters Valley School of Craft is located within the picturesque Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. This setting creates a unique opportunity for immersion learning. Nestled in the midst of the beauty are state of the art studios with workshops run by professional artists from around the country. Each studio is managed by a Department Head or Seasonal Artist Fellow, assisted by a volunteer studio assistant.

A typical 5-day workshop session begins on Friday at 9:00am with check-in between 8:15 and 8:45am at the office. Students may arrive the evening before if staying on campus and dinner is available for purchase in the Dining Hall. Classes continue through Tuesday, running 9am to 5pm each day. Studios are generally open at night until about 10pm (this varies by studio) if students would like to continue to work. Studio clean-up takes place at 3pm on the last day of the workshop.

Participants range in age from 18 to 80, beginner through advanced, from all walks of life. All studios break for meals at the same time and everyone comes together to share in their experience. Visiting other studios in the evening is encouraged and Friday night instructor presentations give everyone an incredible insight into the process and work of all of the visiting artists. Weekly auctions are held on Mondays at 1pm and all of the money raised goes to support the studio assistants while raising money to purchase new equipment for the studios.

As the former hamlet of Bevans, our dormitories, studios, dining hall, office and gallery are housed in mostly historic farm houses and structures. Peters Valley School of Craft is committed to being accessible to all of our students. However, the terrain at the Valley is natural and some of the historic buildings are only partially accessible. Paths and driveways are not paved. If you need special assistance, please indicate your needs with your workshop application. At least two weeks notice must be given when requesting special assistance so that we have time to accommodate your needs.

Please visit our website or call us for complete information on lodging, meals, transportation or any other questions you may have. We look forward to seeing you on campus!

Peters Valley School of Craft is working together with five participating craft schools – Arrowmont, Haystack, Penland and Pilchuck – to feature the benefits of intensive studio experiences offered by our immersion workshops. To find out more about the Craft School Experience visit www.craftschools.us where you will find videos, artists stories and more.

The workshop is less a “how to”, more an experience in discovery, questioning, and ongoing ways of working. No previous knowledge of these textile

structures is required, just a willingness to explore and learn. Lots of ideas will be introduced as possible directions and beginnings – more important than finished results. Beginner and Beyond

All about the Bark: Kozo & ColorMelissa Jay CraigJuly 24 - 28Kozo fiber, the inner bark of the paper mulberry tree (Broussonetia papyrifera), makes beautiful, ethereal yet strong papers, but is also a fascinating material in and of itself. Its strands separate into luscious lace-like patterns and it takes on deep, vibrant color wonderfully; it can be cast over objects, layered for strength, pounded into heavy sheets, or used to make delicate bark drawings. Bark lace can be incorporated into collage and mixed media work with adhesives; it can also be sewn to fabrics, other strong papers, or to itself. Best of all, you do not need access to a paper studio nor expensive equipment to work with the bark directly. Come and see for yourself in this workshop where you will learn to process, dye, and work with kozo bark fiber in both 2D and 3D applications. Beginner to Intermediate

Architectural Photography: Technique & PhilosophyRick WrightJune 12 - 15The Architectural Photographer draws on a wide array of skills to produce memorable images that convey a sense of place, an expression of the architect’s ideas, and a connection to landscape and surroundings. Rick keeps it fun; breaking down the complex process of shooting buildings by locating “The Big Idea” in any shoot. What is the story of the building, the home, the farmhouse, the cabin? How does it relate to the terrain, neighboring homes, the nearby town? In short, what makes this built structure special? Once you start cultivating your own stories, your photography gets simpler and very focused! Perspective and Composition become your chief cohorts as you bring the building to life. Choice of focal length, aperture, focus plane, tripod technique, time of day, white balance, compositing, basic lighting, tilt shift lens work, and many other technical aspects will be explored. Basic and some advanced post-processing Lightroom techniques will be illustrated. Given the array of beauty at Peters Valley, we will have fun choosing and shooting many buildings: both interior and exterior. Much of our time will be in-the-field with ample time devoted to critique and discussion. The key to my work is expressing something vital and singular about the structure; what it feels like to live in that space. Intermediate

Lead Line & Beyond: The Art of Glass CollageSasha ZhitnevaJuly 17 - 21Learn the possible effects of merging different glass techniques to create a two-dimensional panel. Combining glass painting, fused glass, copper foil or lead techniques with glass lamination to hold it all together, allows artists to overcome some of the physical constraints that are inherent in particular mediums in order to create work in a format that suits the requirements on any given project. This course

will cover various laminating adhesives and corresponding processes as well as the technical aspects that need to be taken into consideration when constructing structurally solid glass work. Glass cutting and other skills that are essential for stained glass will also be addressed in a practical setting. The techniques and processes associated with painting on glass and glass fusing will be introduced to more advanced students. In addition to the practical elements of the course, students will learn the theory behind planning the process of creation, including designing a piece, deconstructing it into layers, arranging the order according to the media involved, executing and assembling the work. There will be an opportunity to explore the effects that lighting can have on different types of glass and the use of these as a crucial element in the delivery of a coherently composed glass collage. Encaustic StorytellingMarge LuttrellAugust 7 - 11There is no other medium that lends itself to collage the way encaustic painting does. Wax creates a surface that provides collage with not just encapsulation, but a natural translucent quality along with an incredible textural vocabulary. Marge will cover how to prepare

36

your wax, equipment, tools, substrates and surfaces. She will go over general types of encaustic in the marketplace but also teach you how to make your own. Special techniques including transfers and all the various ways to use different mediums with encaustics will be explained. Marge will also bring her hot box to share the wonders of encaustic mono printing. But more importantly, the class will address how collage can become an integral part of what you are trying to say with your art. Whether you want to explore the ambiguous or directly pull from fantasy, dreams or the historical, the goal is to take you in a new direction that will encourage you to think conceptually and find ways to express who you are through the marriage of these two mediums. PETERS VALLEY CORE VALUES

Peters Valley ENRICHES LIVES through the learning, practice, and appreciation of fine crafts.

The making of fine crafts is a kind of EXPLORATION, which relies on an integration of heart, head, and hands. Peters Valley encourages and facilitates this exploration in everything we do.

We are a vibrant community, bringing together established and emerging artists from around the globe. COMING TOGETHER to make things makes us better artists, able to learn from each other, and to evaluate our own efforts in a wider context.

We provide studio-based educational workshops for life-long learners who have the opportunity to benefit from working with nationally and internationally RECOGNIZED ARTISTS.

We are stewards of the CREATIVE PROCESS: from preparation, to incubation, to illumination, to verification. We strive to develop the creative abilities of all of our participants through this focus on process.

We provide an inspiring natural setting, intensive instruction, the right tools, and a supportive environment to immerse oneself in making things by hand. Fresh air and respite from one’s normal routine can bring FRESH INSIGHTS, and for some, perhaps, opportunities for peak moments, magic, and transformation.

Our gallery shows, craft fairs, annual auctions, presentations at various festivals, community outreach efforts, and other programs allow us to both bring fine crafts to a wider audience, and to help SHAPE FUTURE STANDARDS of excellence in fine crafts.

We honor the tradition of crafts by continuing to experiment with new techniques and materials, in pursuit of artistic, professional, and personal GROWTH. This is our focus and joy.
