Pet Day Angela's face broke into a big smile as she came to the door of her classroom. The teacher had taped a zebra picture to the door with the words "Welcome to Pet Day!" When she looked inside her second grade classroom, she saw that many other children already had their pets with them. Charlie had a white mouse in a cage. The nmouse had a wheel it could spin when it wanted to run. Justin's small white dog sat in his lap while it shook . Angela thought it looked afraid and wondered if it always shook like that. She hoped someone from his family would take the poor dog home soon. She was glad her own pet would not be there until the end of the day. Soon Mrs. Adams, her teacher, went to close the classroom door. It was time for the day to begin. She held up her hand to the class, and everyone began to hush. As soon as they were quiet, she started to speak. "It is nice to see so many pets here. I'm sure many more will come to visit before the end of the day. Even though the room looks like a zoo, we still have work to do," she began. As she spoke, a fat, spotted dog wearing a hat got away from Randy and poked Jessica's cat with his nose. The cat jumped in the girl's arms and hissed , swatting thedog with her claws . The dog yelped in pain and Randy grabbed him to pull him back to his seat. "Please hold on to your dog better, Randy," Mrs. Adams scolded him. "We don't want our animals to clash. Someone may get hurt. Who wants to tell us about their pet first?" Angela thought it was fun hearing about everyone else's pets, but she wanted to show off her own dog most of all. Dad was going to bring him near the end of the day. There was just a half hour before school was out when Angela heard the sound of a knock at the door that she had been waiting for. In came Angela's dad with her black, floppy-eared dog, Sam. Angela showed everyone how well Sam could do many things. First, she showed how he could heel by walking quietly at her side. When she stopped, he sat down. When she told him to lie down, he did. When Angela asked him to speak, he spoke with a "Ruff!" The class began to clap and she said, "Wait. He likes to sing, too!" Just then, Sam put his head back and howled. The whole class began to cheer loudly. They thought Sam was great. The noise was so loud, Mrs. Adams was glad it was Friday. She would have all weekend to get her hearing back. Questions 1. What picture was on the door of the classroom?

Text 1 : Cats vs. Dogs

Deidra is my best friend, but some day she may make my head explode! I feel like I'm caught ina constant contest.

When we take quizzes and tests, we look to see which of us got the better grade.

We have to decide whose mother packs better lunches. Now we are arguing about which of us has the better pet!

I have a cat named Sparkles, and Deidra has a dog named Jasper.

Page 5: Pets Day.docx - Meine Homepagedavidschmidl.bplaced.net/ds/ds/PetsDay.doc · Web viewDad was going to bring him near the end of the day. There was just a half hour before school was

I told her that cats are better pets because they are quiet, cute, and clean. They wash themselves with their tongues, and they use a litter box!

Dogs, on the other hand, are noisy barkers, and they don't clean themselves or use a litter box.Dogs need someone to give them baths, walk them, and scoop up their messes. Dogs are more work.

Deidra says that cats are boring! She claims that dogs are friendlier and better at protecting their owners from strangers. Dogs can be trained to do tricks, she told me. I told her that the only trick I'd seen Jasper do is the one where he made her hot dog disappear when she wasn't looking.

So far, neither one of us has won this competition. I can see a storm brewing in Deidra's eyes. She takes our battles seriously.

Text 2 :

Box Turtle Babies

1 Box turtles live in woods or meadows in the eastern part of the United States. You may have seen a box turtle

in your backyard or crossing a highway.

2 Box turtles are reptiles. Turtles lay eggs on land. When the female turtle is ready, she finds some soft

soil. She digs a hole with her back legs. She lays four to six eggs in the hole. Then she covers the eggs with dirt.

She leaves the nest and never sees her babies.

3 The sun warms the eggs in the nest. After about two months, the eggs hatch. If it is in a place with a cold climate, the baby turtles may stay under the soil until

spring comes again. If it is a warm climate, they dig their way out of the soil after they hatch. They already know

how to dig and how to find their own food.

4 If you find a small box turtle, you may be able to count the rings on its shell to see how old it is. A box

turtle adds a new ring of growth to its shell every year it lives. Start at the center of the turtle's shell. Count each ring, moving outward. After the turtle is about ten years old, the rings are so close together that they are hard to

count.

5 Not many turtles get older than one year. Kids can help turtles by not taking them in as pets. It's okay to pick turtles up and look at them carefully. Then turtles

should be let go to live in their natural homes.

A) Read the text and answer the questions

Carlo's Spider"So, what's the big deal?"asked Tyrone as he arrived at Carlo's house. "What is so exciting?" "I have a new pet out in the garden," said Carlo mysteriously."What kind of pet is it?" asked Tyrone. "Won't your parents be angry if your pet messes up the garden?" "She won't mess it up," said Carlo with a smile. He led his friend into the backyard. On the way, he suddenly pounced on a half-grown grasshopper. "What's that for?" asked Tyrone. "It's food for my pet," said Carlo."What is it, a baby bird or something?" "Something," answered Carlo.

Carlo let Tyrone into the vegetable garden. They walked down the rows of corn. Carlo stopped and pointed. There, between two stalks of corn, was a large spider web. In the center of the web was a yellow garden spider. Above and below her position were white zigzags in the web. This gave her another name, the writing spider. "You going to kill it?" asked Tyrone as he made a face at the arachnid.

"Are you joking ?" asked Carlo. "I'm not going to do something as stupid as that. I'm going to feed her." The boy held his hand a short distance from the web and tossed the grasshopper at it. The hapless insect stuck to the web and began to struggle. The spider was still for a moment. "Come on," said Carlo. "The grasshopper might get away if you don't hurry."

The spider moved one leg and rested it on one of the rapidly vibrating web strands. It was like she was reading the message. Then suddenly she made up her mind and dashed toward her struggling prey. To keep the grasshopper from escaping, she began to spin the insect. As she spun it, she wrapped it in a shroud of strong, white webbing.

Finally, she bit the grasshopper, and it stopped struggling. After all of the excitement, the garden spider went back to her place in the center of the web. "Is that all?" asked Tyrone. "Isn't she going to eat it?"

Carlo nodded. "She's saving it for later. She's pretty cool, isn't she?""I guess so, if a spider can be cool. It seems a little gross, too, in a way," said Tyrone."You know, if it weren't for spiders, we'd have a lot more insects in the world," said Carlo.

"Spiders aren't insects?" asked Tyrone. "They look like the Carlo shook his head. "Spiders are arachnids. They have eight legs.Insects have six legs."

Tyrone watched the spider for a few minutes. "Do you think I couldtry feeding your spider sometime?"
