Replacing thePump Parts

Replace these pump components:

• Vacuum Degassing Chambers

• Solvent Lines to the Proportioning Valves

VacuumDegassingChambers

The PFOA Analysis Kit contains four vacuum degassing chambers that have been treated to remove PFOA.

To replace the vacuum degassing chambers1. Turn off the power to the pump.

2. Unplug the pump from line power.

3. To remove the pump chassis from the pump enclosure, do the following:a. Disconnect the solvent reservoir lines from the inlet ports of the vacuum degasser.b. Disconnect the tubing that connects the outlet of the pump’s placeholder module or dynamic mixer to the

inlet of the autosampler’s heat exchanger.c. Using a #2 Phillips head screwdriver, remove the screw that secures the metal plate covering the LED printed

circuit board and then remove the metal plate.d. Disconnect the LED cable from the left door of the pump.e. Using a #2 Phillips head screwdriver, remove the four screws that secure the pump chassis to the enclosure,

and then pull the chassis out of the enclosure.

4. Using a #2 Phillips head screwdriver, remove the two screws that secure the vacuum degasser assembly to the pump chassis (see Figure 1).

CAUTION To prevent electrical shock, turn off the pump and disconnect it from line power before pulling the pump chassis out of the enclosure.

CAUTION Observe precautions for handling electrostatic sensitive devices.

Note For more information about removing the pump chassis from the pump enclosure, refer to the Accela 600 Pump and Accela 1250 Pump Hardware Manual.

5. To disconnect the vacuum chamber assembly from the vacuum degasser assembly, do the following:a. Slide the vacuum degasser assembly away from the front panel of the pump chassis by approximately

0.75 cm (0.3 in.), until you feel the locking tabs on the bottom of the vacuum degasser assembly align with the slots in the floor of the pump chassis.

Figure 2 shows the vacuum degasser assembly installed in the pump chassis. Figure 3 shows the vacuum degasser assembly slid away from the front panel of the pump chassis.Figure 4 on page 4 shows the locked and unlocked positions of the tabs on the bottom of the vacuum degasser assembly.

In the locked position, the locking tabs secure the vacuum degasser assembly to the pump chassis.

With the tabs in the unlocked position, you can lift the vacuum degasser assembly up at a slight angle from the pump chassis floor.

The locking tabs are now in the unlocked position as shown in Figure 4 (position b).b. To provide access to the screws that secure the vacuum chamber assembly to the vacuum degasser assembly,

carefully lift the vacuum degasser assembly up at a slight angle as shown in Figure 4 (position c) and Figure 5.

c. Using a #2 Phillips head screwdriver, remove the four screws (see Figure 5) that secure the vacuum chambers to the vacuum degasser assembly.

Note To disconnect the vacuum chamber assembly from the vacuum degasser assembly, you do not need to completely remove the vacuum degasser assembly from the pump.

If you want to remove the vacuum degasser assembly from the pump, you must disconnect the J1, J3, and J5 cables and the vacuum hose connected to the vacuum pump.

d. Pull off the vacuum hose connected to the right side of the top vacuum chamber and the vacuum hose connected to the left side of the bottom vacuum chamber (see Figure 6).

6. Working from top to bottom, replace the vacuum chambers (see Figure 7) with the vacuum chambers from the kit. Pull the vacuum hose off the left port of the top chamber and reconnect the hose to a new vacuum chamber. Pull the vacuum hoses off the next vacuum chamber and reconnect the hoses to a new vacuum chamber, and so on.

7. Reconnect the vacuum chamber assembly to the vacuum degasser assembly as follows:a. Reconnect the vacuum hose from the vacuum pump to the top vacuum chamber.b. Reconnect the vacuum hose from the vacuum sensor on the Control printed circuit board to the bottom

vacuum chamber.

Figure 8 shows the vacuum hose connections.

c. Using the four screws that you removed in step 5c on page 5, secure the vacuum chamber assembly to the vacuum degasser assembly.

8. Realign the locking tabs on the bottom of the vacuum degasser assembly with the slots in the bottom of the pump chassis (unlocked position shown in Figure 4 on page 4). If you put your hand beneath the pump chassis, you can feel the tabs in the slots.

9. Slide the vacuum degasser assembly forward until the vacuum ports are immediately behind the openings in the front panel and the locking tabs are in the locked position (see Figure 4 on page 4).

10. Using the two screws that you removed in step 4 on page 2, secure the vacuum degasser assembly to the pump chassis.

11. To reconnect the pump chassis to the pump enclosure, do the following:a. Push the pump chassis back into the pump enclosure.b. Using the four screws that you removed in step 3e on page 2, secure the chassis to the enclosure.c. Reconnect the LED cable.d. Using the screw that you removed in step 3c on page 2, secure the LED cover plate to the left door of the

pump.

12. Reconnect the outlet of the placeholder module or the dynamic mixer to the inlet of the autosampler’s heat exchanger.

Solvent Linesto the

ProportioningValves

The solvent lines that connect the vacuum degasser outlets to the proportioning valves are made of Teflon. Replace these solvent lines with the PEEK tubing and Super Flangeless fittings from the PFOA Analysis Kit.

To replace the solvent lines that connect the degasser outlet ports to the proportioning valves1. Cut the new tubing to the following lengths:

2. Using the Super Flangeless fittings from the PFOA Analysis Kit, connect the solvent lines to the vacuum degasser outlets and the proportioning valves.

Replacing theAutosampler

Parts

Depending on the autosampler model, replace these parts:

• For the Accela Autosampler, replace the transfer tubing assembly, the needle tubing assembly, and the wash solvent line connected to the left side of the syringe valve. For instructions about replacing the transfer tubing assembly and the needle tubing assembly, refer to these topics in the Maintenance chapter of the Accela Autosampler Hardware Manual: “Replacing the Transfer Tubing” and “Replacing the Needle Tubing Assembly.”

• For the Accela Open Autosampler with a fast wash station, replace the two wash solvent line assemblies (see page 9). Each PFOA-free wash solvent line assembly consists of a length of PEEK tubing with compression fittings and flared ends and a shutoff valve.

To replace the wash solvent line for the Accela Autosampler1. Remove the bottle cap from the wash bottle.2. Remove the filter from the end of the wash solvent line, and then pull the wash solvent line out of the wash

bottle cap.3. Clean the wash bottle and fill it with fresh solvent.4. Cut a length of PEEK tubing (from the kit) approximately 123 cm (4 ft) long.5. Slide one end of the PEEK tubing through the wash bottle cap.

6. Screw the wash bottle cap onto the wash bottle.7. Install a Super Flangeless fitting onto the free end of the wash bottle line, and then connect the Super Flangeless

fitting to the left side of the autosampler syringe valve.

IMPORTANT Do not reconnect the solvent reservoir lines to the inlet ports of the vacuum degasser. The solvent reservoir lines are made of Teflon. Replace these lines as described in “Replacing the Solvent Reservoir Lines” on page 12.

To replace the wash lines for the Accela Open Autosampler (fast wash station configuration)1. Remove each wash solvent line assembly as follows:

a. Turn the shutoff valve connected to the wash bottle spigot to the Closed position (see Figure 9).

b. Unscrew the other end of the wash line, which is connected to the wash station pump (see Figure 10).

c. Drain the solvent in the wash line into an appropriate waste container.d. Unscrew and remove the end of the wash line that is connected to the shutoff valve.e. Empty the contents of the wash bottle into an appropriate waste container.f. Loosen the nut that secures the shutoff nut to the wash bottle spigot, and then remove the shutoff valve from

the wash bottle.

2. Install each new shutoff valve as follows:a. Slide the nut, washer, and ferrule onto the wash bottle spigot using the orientation shown in Figure 11.

b. Insert the shutoff valve body into the nut, and then tighten the nut.c. Screw one end of the new wash line into the free end of the shutoff valve.d. Screw the other end of the new wash line into the wash station pump.e. Fill the wash bottle with the appropriate solvent.f. Open the shutoff valve by placing its lever parallel to the wash line as shown in Figure 12.

Installing theTrapping

Column

To capture residual PFOA, install a trapping column in the flow path between the outlet of the pump’s liquid displacement assembly (LDA) and the outlet of the pump’s placeholder module or dynamic mixer.

To install the trapping column1. Using a 1/4 in. open-ended wrench, remove the static mixer from the pump as follows:

• Remove the fitting connected to the LDA outlet.

• Remove the fitting connected to the inlet of the pump’s placeholder module or dynamic mixer.

2. Using two of the supplied two-piece compression fittings (see Figure 13) and the precut, 5 cm length of stainless steel tubing, connect the inlet of the trapping column to the LDA outlet.

3. Using two of the supplied two-piece compression fittings and the precut, 10 cm length of stainless steel tubing, connect the outlet of the trapping column to the inlet of the placeholder module or dynamic mixer.

Figure 14 shows the trapping column installed between the LDA outlet and the placeholder module inlet.

Note Use the supplied compression fittings to make the plumbing connections. Using other fittings might cause leaks.

Replacing theSolvent

ReservoirLines

The solvent reservoir lines are made of Teflon. Use the Super Flangeless fittings and the PEEK tubing from the kit to replace the solvent reservoir lines.

To replace the solvent reservoir lines1. Remove the Teflon solvent reservoir lines from the solvent reservoir bottles.2. Clean the solvent reservoir bottles and fill them with fresh solvent.3. Cut four lengths of 0.04 in. ID PEEK tubing, approximately 1.5 m (5 ft) each.

The appropriate length for the solvent reservoir lines depends on the distance between the solvent reservoir bottles and the inlet ports of the pump’s vacuum degasser.

4. Remove the fittings from the solvent filters found in the kit.

5. Install each solvent reservoir line (see Figure 15) as follows:a. Insert one end of the PEEK tubing through the solvent reservoir bottle cap, and then install a Super

Flangeless fitting on this end of the tubing.b. Press the end of the tubing into the solvent filter port, and then screw the Super Flangeless fitting into the

solvent filter.c. Screw the bottle cap onto the solvent reservoir bottle.d. Install a Super Flangeless fitting onto the free end of the solvent reservoir line.

6. Place the solvent reservoir bottle in the solvent platform. 7. Route the tubing through the clips located on the left side of the front panel of each Accela module.8. Connect the solvent reservoir line to the appropriate inlet port of the pump’s vacuum degasser.
