The Postgraduate Certificate in Health Science is characterised by advanced study in a specific nursing or health science discipline, requiring a foundation of undergraduate knowledge and skills achieved through previous tertiary qualifications or equivalent professional experience.
Upon graduating with the Postgraduate Certificate in Health Science you will have developed your knowledge and skills of critical analysis, constructive synthesis and their application to high quality approaches to health care delivery.
Campus The postgraduate courses are offered either online, or with blended delivery. This flexible delivery method allows learners to study at their pace, in their place, in locations throughout New Zealand.

Rewarding study for a rewarding careerThe Postgraduate Certificate in Health Science offers a selection of either online or blended delivery designed to meet the needs of nurses, health practitioners, health sector managers and other professionals whose practice has a focus on health. It is comprised of 60 credits, which is considered to be equivalent to six months full-time study and may be completed full-time over six months or part-time over one to two years.
Graduates of the Postgraduate Certificate in Health Science may be able to credit these courses to the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science or the Master of Health Science (pending successfully achieving the specified academic entry criteria). In addition, Registered Nurse graduates of the Postgraduate Certificate in Health Science may choose to progress into the Master of Nursing Science or Master of Nursing (Nurse Practitioner) programme (pending successfully achieving the specified academic entry criteria).
The Postgraduate Certificate in Health Science is an interdisciplinary programme, and as it also includes courses specific to nursing practice, it is approved by the Nursing Council of New Zealand as an advanced nursing practice programme.

YOUR FUTURE STUDY OPPORTUNITIESPending successful completion of the required academic entry requirements, graduates of the Postgraduate Certificate in Health Science may progress to the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science or Master of Health Science. PARTNERSHIPSThe Postgraduate Certificate in Health Science is offered in association with The Tertiary Accord of New Zealand (TANZ). TANZ is a collaborative alliance of seven institutes of technology. The TANZ postgraduate health professions partnership includes the Schools of Nursing from the following tertiary education institutions: Eastern Institute of Technology (EIT), Universal College of Learning (UCOL), Ara Institute of Canterbury (Ara) and Otago Polytechnic (OP).
On enrolment, if you live nearer one of the TANZ partner institutes (UCOL, Ara, OP), rather than EIT, you may choose to access/receive academic support from the other participating TANZ partner.

BLENDED / ONLINE LEARNINGAll the postgraduate courses are offered either online or with blended delivery. This means that the majority of the work is located on a virtual teaching platform with directed activities and learning that you work through. Lecturers work within the virtual classroom setting daily so that they maintain contact with you as much as if they were in a face-to-face classroom setting.
Blended delivery means that there are on-campus contact sessions or workshops with the bulk of the learning activity undertaken in the online environment.
Various teaching modes are used, such as virtual classroom discussions at predetermined times, and also in the asynchronous format.
This flexible delivery method allows you to study at your pace, in your place, at locations throughout New Zealand.
INDIVIDUAL STUDY HOURSGenerally the courses are delivered asynchronously via online delivery. However, some courses may require attendance at face-to-face workshops or synchronous online sessions.

Each credit for the course generally represents 10 hours of student learning/study time over the period of the course.
Each course consists of online learning opportunities and in some cases clinical fieldwork, and on campus workshops. You are expected to spend subsequent time in independent/self-directed study, critical reflection, and field work in your place of study or place of work.

ENTRY CRITERIAThe normal requirement for entry is an undergraduate degree in nursing or a health science with a B pass or better.
Where the applicant's undergraduate degree does not provide the basis of study at the level required for more advanced study, enrolment in transitional or undergraduate courses may be required before the applicant shall be admitted.
Where an applicant does not hold an undergraduate degree in nursing or health science:
▶ The applicant shall provide evidence of having completed a relevant professional qualification AND
▶ Provide evidence of successful completion of a relevant qualification or programme of study which is equivalent to those of first degree graduates, through the submission of a portfolio of evidence.
A personal interview may be part of the application process.
Special ConditionsFor acceptance into some of the nursing courses, applicants must provide evidence of a current practising certificate with the Nursing Council of New Zealand.
For nurses considering the nurse practitioner pathway, please seek guidance in regard to course choices before enrolling. You may contact the Postgraduate Programmes Coordinator through the Postgraduate Programmes Secretary.
Some courses will require applicants to be actively working in the specialty area of practice.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE ENTRY REQUIREMENTApplicants for whom English is an additional language must demonstrate an acceptable level of English language fluency prior to acceptance in the programme. Ways in which English language fluency may be demonstrated include successful study of a programme in which English was the language of instruction (conditions apply),
completion of a New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 5 with the Academic), approved scores on IELTS tests (Academic score of 6.5 with no band score lower than 6, achieved in a single test) or completion of accepted international equivalents.
All results for IELTS or other accepted English language tests must have been achieved in the two years prior to admission.
ENTRY WITH CREDITApplicants may be admitted with credit transfer or recognition of prior learning. The Postgraduate Programmes Cluster Committee has discretion in the granting of academic credit.
Academic credit may be awarded as specified credit where there is a substantial match between previous learning and the course for which academic credit is sought; or unspecified credit where the learning is broadly relevant to, and at an equivalent level to, the course for which academic credit is sought.
Credit granted shall not be for course(s) completed as part of an undergraduate degree, nor shall credit be granted that exceeds one-half of the total programme credits.
A RPL/Entry with Credit application pack is available on enrolment. It is recommended that applications for RPL/Entry with credit are made as part of your initial application. This will assist in our academic advisement to you regarding course your programme of study and course section. However, your entry with credit cannot be processed until you are enrolled.

Advanced Clinical Assessment and Diagnostic Reasoning (N)
This course begins with an overview of comprehensive health assessment and diagnostic reasoning within the context of current trends in expanding and advanced practice.
Students will critically appraise their own understanding of anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology required to develop advanced skills in interviewing, physical examination and diagnostic reasoning to identify knowledge deficits and learning needs.
Skills, approaches and strategies for health assessment and diagnostic reasoning will be further enhanced. Students will be required to engage in significant independent learning and fieldwork. Students will undertake a range of activities to demonstrate advanced clinical assessment skills, critical thinking and the application of diagnostic reasoning strategies.

Advanced Pathophysiology for Health Professionals
This course builds upon undergraduate study and the knowledge embedded in practice. The course will explore complex adult and child disease processes in order to support advanced diagnostic reasoning and therapeutic interventions for these client groups. This course assumes knowledge of normal physiological function and directs the student towards a progressive and more critical understanding of altered, complex health states.

This course advances knowledge and understanding of ethical and legal principles associated with health care. Students explore questions and reflect on issues concerning the equity and appropriateness of health care services. It provides the opportunity for students to develop knowledge and skills in ethical and legal decision making and critically appraise various issues associated with ethics and law.

Advanced Practice to Support Child and Family Health
Health care technologies and approaches to care are dynamic. Many of these changes affect both the person/individual and the family as a whole. Arising from this starting point, this course draws on knowledge of the child/tamariki, youth/rangatahi and families/whānau. The child/youth within the family as the centre of health care will be examined and explored from a wide range of perspectives and disciplines.

This course is intended for those working in health service management and those considering the possibility of a management role. It is anticipated that students participating in this course are able to apply their knowledge and skills to their chosen area of practice.

Advanced Practice to Support Elder Health
This course recognises the diversity of the age group and the complex relationship between determinants of health, health status and well-being. With the steady increase in the number of older people, and particularly frail elders, it is vital that advanced practitioners are able to assess, plan and deliver appropriate and evidence-based services for this age group.
The course examines the scope of independent/collaborative practice in relation to health promotion, maintenance and restoration of health, preventative care, rehabilitation and/or palliative care and encourages the generation of new approaches to the delivery of expert care in different settings.

Advanced Diabetes Nursing
This course develops advanced theoretical and practical knowledge of diabetes mellitus within a primary care framework to an expert level.
Practitioners are assisted to explore the context of diabetes mellitus in relation to the impact of this disease on an international as well as an individual perspective. Contemporary issues in relation to pathophysiology, diagnosis, facilitating clients to reach target goals and holistic strategies to improve outcomes and prevent co-morbidities will be discussed.
Practitioners completing this course would be capable of providing diabetes education and therapeutic environments that support the patient/whānau with diabetes as well as primary prevention for the community.

This course enables the student to develop and extend knowledge and skills in health promotion policy, planning, practice and inter-organisational work with partners. Students will critically examine the theoretical, environmental, economic and social issues in health promotion policy and practice within New Zealand and in an international context. This course aims to allow students to critically investigate the health and healthcare systems in New Zealand, examining the overarching health strategies that guide and inform healthcare delivery and exploring the historical (including Te Tiriti o Waitangi), cultural, socioeconomic and environmental influences on the health of the New Zealand population. The course is appropriate for international students who have recently arrived in New Zealand, but is also suitable for domestic students, who will gain an in-depth knowledge of health and healthcare in the context of Aotearoa New Zealand.

This course develops theoretical and practical knowledge of breastfeeding, human lactation and infant nutrition to an expert level. Practitioners are assisted to explore the context of breastfeeding, human lactation and infant nutrition in relation to historical and socio-cultural perspectives, anatomy and physiology, mother – baby dyad and other contemporary issues.
Practitioners completing this course would be capable of providing lactation education and environments that support breastfeeding, and infant nutritional support.

This Level 8 online course provides for specialist practice in critical care. The course explores essential theory underpinning practice that assists the registered nurse working in a critical care environment, to develop advanced practice knowledge and skills. Students will explore and critically analyse all aspects of the critical care environment that impact on patient care and professional practice. This includes clinical governance, multidisciplinary team collaboration and the legal and ethical issues related to the provision of care in a bioscience/technical situation.

This course aims to develop students’ advanced knowledge and skills for professional clinical supervision as a formalised reflective learning practice providing for the sharing of experiences, particularly in relation to clinical decision-making, practicalities and ethical issues in professional practice.

This course aims to enable health and social service professionals from a broad range of specialties to develop an advanced understanding of the principles and concepts underlying cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) as an evidence-based method of psychosocial intervention which addresses a broad range of symptoms in both clinical and non-clinical populations.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) – (Clinical) is a practice-based course designed to enable a broad range of health and social service professionals to develop specialist advanced therapeutic skills in CBT. The integrated use of theory, practice, and professional supervision from a clinical perspective will enable learners to critique and deliver cognitive behavioural therapeutic services for inpatient, outpatient, and in community settings within the New Zealand context.

HOW TO ENROLThere is an easy 3-step process to follow when enrolling at EIT.
STEP 1Check out the programmes online to see the programmes available for you to study. A copy of the course information for each programme is available online.
STEP 2You can now use your RealMe verified identity to apply for study at EIT. If you use your RealMe verified identity you will no longer be sent a copy of your application form to sign. You also will not need to provide us with a copy of your primary ID.
If you apply online without using RealMe then you will be sent a summary of your enrolment to check and sign. Your enrolment cannot progress until you have sent this back to us. Please return this quickly along with any documentation we request from you.
You can also apply using a paper enrolment form. Please call us on 0800 22 55 348 and we will send you one out.
You will receive an acceptance letter from your Faculty with programme information. This will include the start date of your study and any special information regarding your programme.
It may also include course selection forms which you need to complete and return to EIT. Depending on your chosen programme of study, you may be invited to attend an interview before you are accepted.
STEP 3Arrangement for full payment of enrolment fees must be made before the start of your programme. You will receive an invoice with payment details.
Fees-Free government scheme: Tertiary education is fees-free for eligible domestic tertiary students. To check if you are eligible, go to FeesFree.govt.nz and enter your National Student Number (NSN). If you are not eligible you will be responsible for paying your fees.
Scholarships and grants: Scholarships and grants make life easier by helping to cover your fees, other costs and living expenses while you study. The majority of courses are offered in an online delivery mode, meaning there will be no requirement for you to physically attend an on-campus class. Other courses are available through flexible (blended/online) delivery, however some of the courses do require you to attend on-campus workshops. Unless specified, on-campus face-to-face classes are held at the EIT Hawke’s Bay Campus, Taradale, and the rest of your learning carried out online. You will be notified of dates and venues prior to the commencement of your course.
Please note, for your study purposes, each 30 credit course requires 56 contact hours (i.e. equivalent to 8 study days of release time). Registered Nurse applicants are strongly advised to refer to their local DHB postgraduate funding co-ordinator, should they require information about Health Workforce New Zealand (HWNZ) postgraduate nursing education funding.
For those of you who are new to online study, we will be offering an “Orientation to Online Learning”, which will be held online. Participation is highly recommended. Please note that enrolling in a postgraduate course with an online component assumes that you have at least some basic computer knowledge and skills. The Orientation involves a combination of self-directed activities and an ADOBE Connect web-based virtual classroom. You will be notified of the date and further details prior to the start of the semester.

Applying for credit - There is a separate application and fee for this.
New Students: It may be possible for us to consider credit of previous formal postgraduate study from another institution, or some Recognition of Prior Learning. Please request an application pack from us.
EIT returning students: If you have previously completed a postgraduate health science qualification at EIT and are progressing onto further study after a period of 5 years or more, you may wish to apply for credit. We recommend that you do this at time of enrolment into the new programme. Please request an application pack from us. Existing EIT students who have progressed onto further study in after a break of less than 5 years are not required to apply.
