Loans are an increasingly important component

or postgraduate students when they are

putting their unding package together.

prfessinal and Career evelment

Lans (pCLs)

A Proessional and Career Development

Loan is a deerred repayment bank loan set

at a competitive fxed interest rate that can

be used to support learning or training thatenhances your job or career prospects. The

loan is provided by one o two high street

banks (Barclays and the Co-operative),

in association with the Learning and Skills

Council. The loan oers between £300

and £10,000, to help und tuition and living

expenses or up to two years. Repayments

usually start within a month o graduation.

For urther inormation visit:

www.direct.gov.uk/pcdl

The University’s code or PCDLs is 8802.

Other high street banks may oer specialistloans to students, especially those wishing

to study an MBA or Law. Personal loans,

borrowing rom amily and riends, as well

as extending overdrat limits, should also be

considered. Borrowing money is a recognised

option in terms o unding postgraduate study

but it does come with conditions. Always

seek advice and think hard beore taking

out any loan.

pstgraduate schlarshis and grants

Postgraduates can apply or scholarships and

grants rom a number o sources. Awards areoered by the University and through external

organisations such as Research Councils,

An alternative to loans is to seek non-repayable

awards to postgraduates. These range romlarge medical societies and charities down to

very small organisations. These awards range

in value and eligibility requirements and may

Paid work

The reality or most postgraduate students is

that they need to seek part-time employment

to und their studies. The type o work

undertaken and work patterns are

extremely varied.

Paid teaching and other University work

I you are a postgraduate research student,

you may apply or a teaching assistantship,

which would enable you to undertake a certain

amount o teaching on an undergraduate

programme. This provides an additional source

o income and may broaden your academic

horizons. You should get in touch with your

department or more inormation.

Additional income can also be generated by

acting as a demonstrator, or by engaging in

tutorial or marking work. Your programme tutor

or research supervisor will be able to provideurther details on these opportunities.

Student Mentor Scheme

A very limited number o places are available

or postgraduates to provide help and support

to other students resident in the University’s

sel-catered accommodation. As a Student

Mentor you would live in one o the residences,

thus providing you with accommodation, and

you would be paid or your work. Further

Access to Learning Fund (ALF)

Rather than let money problems interere

with a student’s studies, the Student Funding

Ofce administers a number o schemes

designed to help alleviate the fnancial burden

some students may experience. The Access

to Learning Fund (ALF) is the most prominent

o these schemes. ALF is a non-repayable

discretionary und that is provided by thegovernment in order to assist students

who are experiencing fnancial difculty.

The minimum award rom ALF is £100;

the maximum is £3,500.

Home/EU Research Councils

There are seven government-unded UK Research Councils;together they support excellence in postgraduate trainingacross all subject areas.

Research Council training encompasses

those activities that develop the careers o all

researchers; part o this includes unding and

support or training in postgraduate study at

doctoral and in some cases Masters level.

All seven o the UK Research Councils support

academic excellence in their own specifc feld.

As a result o this, Research Council awards

or postgraduate study are regarded as some

o the most prestigious postgraduate awards

available in academia, and as such are highly

sought ater; competition is extremely ferce.

Research Council awards or postgraduate

study are available to home and EU residents,

those with EU Migrant Worker status, and

individuals who are deemed to have normalresidence in the UK. Some Research Councils

may also und overseas students in exceptional

circumstances. Full Research Council awards

will cover the cost o tuition ees and also

provide a maintenance grant to support

you during your study. Depending on your

residency status and the Research Council

you apply to, some EU students may be eligible

or a ees-only award. The value o ees and

maintenance grant support that you receive

is defned by Research Councils UK, the

governing body or all seven o the UK

Research Councils. For 2012–2013 thisis set at a ee rate o £3,828 and a standard

annual maintenance grant o £13,590.

A standard Research Council award will

provide you with three years o unding or

a PhD, and one year’s unding or an MA,

MPhil, or MRes. Research Council awards

are available on a ull or part-time basis.

In addition to the basic maintenance grant

and ees support, some Research Councils

also provide other opportunities or training or

unded students, such as a research training

support grant, overseas institutional visits, overseas feldwork, collaborative awards with

industry and public sector partners, difcult

language training, conerence attendance,

and work and research placements.

Each o the Research Councils is managed

in a slightly dierent way. This is reected in

the dierent way that each Research Council

requires its new award holders to be recruited

each year. To make this easier or you, the

University o Birmingham has a dedicated

member o sta who acts as the nominated

contact between students, the Universityo Birmingham and the Research Councils.

I you have any questions on potential unding,

or your current unding, you can contact the

The seven UK Research Councils, their website

addresses, the subject areas they support, and

the means by which you can be considered or
